Hey guys,

Recently my N/A R34 started making an odd sound occasionally when I start it up (Usually in the morning).

It sounds similar to the sound your engine makes when you try to turn the key whilst it is already going (If that makes sense) - Sorry I have no idea what to call it.

It's like a tinny sound.

I changed the oil very recently, which didn't change a thing (Didn't really expect it to, but thought it could remedy it somehow), and I've had an ongoing issue with my electronics (CD player randomly turns off when I have high beams and other electronics running on full - extremely irritating)

I had the battery changed like 8 months ago, so that shouldn't be much of an issue, and I inspected the earth points on the block and chassis, which look completely clean, leading me to think that the alternator is boned, although this doesn't explain the noise upon startup.

Anybody got any ideas, before I take it to the mechanics?

Cheers,

Cory

The nlose is the starter motor.

It's not engaging correctly onto the ring gear on the flywheel.

Sometimes cleaning up the solenoid and throw out mechanism helps.

Hi Cory,

I can get you on to a few guys in Mount Gambier who would more than likely help you out rather than take it to a mechanic straight up. Drop me a PM if you want mate :)

Hey man,

Sorry I haven't been on SAU in months.

Since that post, I replaced the alternator with a new Bosch unit, and bought a 2nd hand starter motor.

Didn't fit the second hand starter as the noise disappeared, however it has now returned, and my electronics are still crapping out on me.

A battery place in Mount Gambier told me the battery was fine, and the issue could be with wiring...

Might just book myself into an auto electrician and see what he says. My mechanic friend can always swap the starter motor.

    • See, that button sounds like perfection Duncan! My eyes really don't like light shining at them from a dash when I'm driving. Being part red colourblind, I've found for most cars that I can change colours on, I set everything to red, so my eyes see the elast amount of colour! I miss normal gauges in cars
    • bro, knowing the Japanese in  the 90's, i wouldn't be surprised if they shared components across their model lineup.
    • Maaaan so many "little" things  i rly hope my old RB20 would be "ok" and not too bad. I try to learn what and what not do i need. I look at crossmember at it looks different...even parts numbers are different. Wiring and all that i rly do not know...yeah someone mentioned the speedo thing. On that yoke clip. I rly do not know what can and cant be done "custom" so that is why iam asking to know and not be suprised 馃檪  I know what it looks like
    • Oh, there's also the gearbox crossmember which will probably be different between the small box and the big box, and the wiring loom will probably need to be modified, because the plugs for the switches etc, will probably be different. And I think the speedo on the small box R34s is from somwhere stupid, like the diff, possibly, so you'd need to work out what needs to be done about that (assuming it is different). I think the thing you need to realise is that the front end of that yoke is a large hollow tube with splines on the inside that mates with the splines on the box's output shaft. It is a dedicated thing - not available "aftermarket". They were made to suit that box, by the car's OEM.
