Hey guys,

I was wondering if anyone could offer advice on how to sell a car. I have a GTiR pulsar I am trying to sell. I placed an ad in the trading post for 2 weeks, and I didn't get a single call. A few traders called offering to auction the car for me.

What did I do wrong? The asking price was reasonable and negotiable...

I must confess that I am not in Australia. I live and work n Japan, however the car is located in Sydney. The car was mine here and I sent it to Australia after having it for 3 years. My father is selling it on my behalf.

What is the market like with import cars there? Is there a glut of vehicles on the market making it hard to sell a used car? If you can give me a few pointers, I would appreciate it.

p.s: After finishing with my GTiR, I bought a Lexus ES300.....bit of a difference. It is a 96 model with everything including TV and car nav......I paid $3000AUS with 6 months rego.....wouldn't get a sigma for that back in OZ!

Put it up on:

www.carsales.com.au

www.drive.com.au

www.carpoint.com.au

Remember it's a buyer's market, so you'll only get what someone is willing to pay for it.

e.g. Say your GTiR is worth $25,000, but no-one is in the market for one. Everyone looking for a performance hatchback would prefer to buy a WRX hatch for the same price. There is only one guy interested, and he's thinks your car is worth $20,000. Well you can either accept the lower value, or keep the car and wait for the right buyer to come along and pay what the car is really worth.

Warning: you might be waiting upto 6 months to sell your car if you're waiting for the right buyer to come along.

Good luck!

up to six months......that is a worry.....

if the vehicle was heavily modified, and would suit are very particular kind of buyer, then I would understand it would take a long time....

However, it is a standard GTiR, with an asking price of only $15.9k, with 12 months rego, new tyres, and a few other bits and pieces....not even a single call??

Is the trading post a dud?

Are people like yourselves, that are into a special kind of vehicle, so well networked within your community that the tradingpost is obselete because you just don't need it to get word out that you are selling?

It will take several months to sell..

I've allowed myself about 3 months to sell mine in reasonable expectation.

Either drop the price to something stupid ($12k) and get a quick sale, or play the waiting game. I think largely the forums are a waste of time to advertise - so many tire kickers who reckon they're experts on everything out there, and yet don't really have the money anyhow.
