V28VX37
Hi guys, Has anyone replaced their exhaust middle muffler with a resonator? If you did, what happened to the noise levels? I've got an R34 GTT sedan with an R33 HKS Super Drager (the one with the massive rear muffler) modified to suit, but the middle muffler is sitting really low and regularly scraping. I'd like to replace it with a resonator (to run under the transmission tunnel) but I like the relative quietness of the exhaust system as it is, so I don't really want to make it louder... Also, what catalyser would you recommend to flow 300rwkw? Needs to bolt on to 3" flanges. I'm thinking a 200cpi metal cat of some kind. I've got an X-Force ceramic high flow currently but it's suspected of restricting flow. Thanks! Ryno
I use a Venom Cat with 5" body, that should allow you to hit that power goal. See link... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-Nissan-VENOM-High-Flow-Cat-Skyline-R32-R33-R34-GTST-GTR-S13-C33-A31-/251462134106?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a8c4fa95a As for replacing the muffler with a resonator, it really depends on the quality of both. But typically a resonator should muffle the sound reasonably well at low RPM's, though at higher RPM it will change the note but not muffle the sound as well as a standard muffler. I'm currently looking to do the same with my car - I've found these resonators which seem to have pretty good reviews that I'll probably go with: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Vibrant-ULTRA-QUIET-Resonator-3in-inlet-outlet-x-14in-overall-length-/281208154580?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item41794fe9d4 1 Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/444960-replacing-middle-muffler-with-a-resonator-best-cat-r34-gtt/#findComment-7324048 Share on other sites
V28VX37
Thanks Ryno! Any other recommendations for resonators or cats? scotty nm35
I use 200 cell 5 inch cats, similar to the Venom ones, they flow over 400kw. Not cheap though, around $200, and they don't have the flanges welded on yet. The Venom 100 cell ones come with the flanges already welded in the correct place, and for a very reasonable price. I would buy one of them seeing you already have the cat back, they should flow even more, but I believe 100 cell isn't 'Legal' afaik. Resonators are crap. Perhaps you can just get the muffler tucked up a bit more? wolverine
Venom do 200 cell ones too last I checked (which was a while ago) if this is important to you. AngryRB
mine sounded just right with a 100cell 4inch cat, 3 1/2inch system with 3 1/2inch jap resonator and a 3inch Xforce muffler, that's all, sounded like quality and just like a well breathing engine not a shit loud muffler and crap breathing engine Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/444960-replacing-middle-muffler-with-a-resonator-best-cat-r34-gtt/#findComment-7329481 Share on other sites
scotty nm35
Venom do 200 cell ones too last I checked (which was a while ago) if this is important to you. That would be the best option then, and will flow more than enough for OP. V28VX37
Thanks guys! I've just contacted Venom to check availability and price of the biggest 200 CPSI bolt-on cat they have with 3" flanges. ...Resonators are crap. Perhaps you can just get the muffler tucked up a bit more? Good idea, thanks Scott. I just had another look at it and there's at least an inch and a bit of space above the cat & mid muffler, I better take it to an exhaust shop. Just out of curiosity, why are resonators crap? KiwiRS4T
I think there is a large variety of resonators on the market and the materials used and method of construction obviously play a part in how well they work. I have a 5inch 100 cell Venom cat, a 3in resonator about 500mm long and a 3in Japanese muffler ( had a job to find one that was 3in right through - many are stepped down to 2 1/2 in just before the tail pipe for some reason). This system sounds good and is right on the edge for legal loudness. This is measured at 3000 rev/min and its is in fact quite a bit louder at 6 - 7000 rev/min which is why i keep the revs down around town! Manuel Kasko
Good for you. You're still advertising your products and you are running a business - pay up like everyone else. Agreed with Ravi, we are all for products like yours but you have to do what everyone else does and pay for the right to advertise. Hypergear is a small fish in a big pond and now he has a huge following on SAU, however he pays to advertise on here just like every other business. Like using 409 stainless so it rusts just like mild steel? butterfly effect
409 rusting like mild steel. I don't think so. I don't know where you get your information from but I would be changing sources.
