Hi all,

My car is getting a High mount turbo set up, also 45mm Hypergate. All air con parts have been removed as well and will be plugging up all the holes in the firewall with rubber grommets.

My questions is how many people have been pulled over by the police and let go with a high mount turbo set up? My engine bay will be very tidy and not flashy at all (read no chrome anything or red/blue speedflow fittings) everything will also be neutral colours, ie black/silver/grey. Will also be running an oil cooler and power steering cooler, not sure if these will sit behind the FMIC or in behind the front bar vents.

If you don't know anything about skylines you really shouldn't be able to tell that it is really quite a serious track car.

I understand that it really comes down to the police officer that is looking at it, but anyone have any thoughts on whether i will be let go?

Thanks

You will be pulled over for something else, that may lead to defect which will lead to ..... getting it certified.

but until then (being pulled over and defected) she'll be right mate

Edit: OEM doesn't come with High mounts. Would be a truly silly cop not to ask for your certification papers.

Again I have to say if your prone to doing something silly on a public street you will be done.

That is my attitude to pretty much everything in life haha! I think you are correct saying that i will get pulled over for something else and then get reamed. I have never in 4 years of owning an import been pulled over in it let alone have the police look in the engine bay. What kind of questions do they ask you or do they usually just fine/defect you straight away? I am glad to have no knowledge of how this process works haha

The other things that i am unsure of

> I have a bolt in half cage, had a quick look on the RMS website rules and regs for modifying vehicles but couldn't find anything about roll cages
> Car is still regoed in SA as i only recently moved to NSW, and i plan to keep it registered there because rego is so cheap! Not sure if NSW can defect an interstate vehicle? I assume they can but im not sure what the process is if i do get defected. Maybe i just have to pass a blue slip inspection?

Officer: "How come your turbo is up here?"

Driver: "Damn it! I told off my mechanic for putting my spare wheel back in upside-down - and now he's done it again!"

Ignorance might be your best hope...

Well, there are a few things to know. Now don't take this as gospel, as it just things I've picked up over time.

First thing is first, it's going to depend on the officer on the day, and how they are feeling. As much as it shouldn't, it will.

Two. It's illegal. No two ways about it. Unless engineered and emmisions tested.

Three, I believe it is very difficult for an interstate car to be defected. As it would have to be cleared in the stage that has issued the rego.

Four, I think you have 6 months to officially register and transfer your licence if you have moved state.

Five, cage is illegal, and dangerous in certain circumstances. Make sure your head cannot come in contact with it in an accident or remove it.

Most of it comes down to not doing anything stupid, and not getting yourself into the wrong place at the wrong time.

Good luck :)

PN-Mad, i thought half cage was legal ? As long as the car's rego'd as a 2 seater i.e. Full cage is illegal regardless.

As for getting away with a high mount =/, good luck is all i can say and emissions testing can be a real bitch.

Yah ive had my 33 now in NSW for 6 years since moving it back from adelaide. Rego is now NSW. The only drama you will have is that if you have a NSW license you will need to have it registered in your name in NSW plates. Unless you can find a mate in SA who is willing to have the rego at his/her address. And i know what you mean about cheap rego. When i brought my ## down there it was like $400 bucks and that included rego plus green slip.

On a second note. In the 6 years ive been back home in NSW my 33 has been pulled over numerous times but only for a 'Random Breath test" Shes lowered, 3 inch exhaust, hi flow turbo, FMIC and lots of guages. But the cops never have once asked to pop the hood. Might be the fact i dont drive like a dickhead. But yah you might have trouble getting a blue slip for your new rego as your car is ment to be back to factory specs when inspected. Try find a place that will blue slip a lot of imports. i.e ask JEM, Top secret im[ports blacktwown, Unique autosports seven hills. Ect ect.

Good luck

I think it's a bit of a grey area. It is making changes to the structural rigidity of the car.

Have to look up the exact mod laws I think and see what it says. Defiantly the 2 seater thing.

The most important thing is to make sure your head can't hit the bloody thing when you crash. That's why CAMS have introduced all these new padding regs. You really don't want to hit it without a helmet on... :/

I looked it up as I've been considering a half cage for some time.. Section LK of vsb 14.. Not sure if there is an updated vsb but according to that bulletin, half cage is legal if certified.

Agreed on not whacking your head against it haha, helmet or no helmet.. Just wouldn't be nice!

So far I've been lucky ! (Knock on wood)

Been pulled over, told to open bonnet and no issues with big high mount, they cared more about air filters and were glad mine was boxed up,

Cars super quiet too so they don't care, but on the other hand if a copper hears me crack gate I'm sure they will be super sus and prob go nuts with defects

Agree with the above statements, & I'd like to elaborate further on 1 of Alex's points:

3: It's not difficult to defect an interstate car. Just because a car is from another state, doesn't mean it can't be defected. As stated in point 1. It depends on the copper. Any vehicle defected in another state, must have the defect cleared by an inspector from the state the vehicle is registered in.

ok to answer the questions after talking to an engineer myself..

highmount can be legal if it passes emissions testing as part of certification.

Bolt in and weld in half cages are legal only after being inspected and passing certification, it does not need to meet cams standards ie be cams approved to pass engineering buuuuuuuut why would u bother if it isnt!

all aftermarket coolers are actually illegal also unless engineered and securely attached with a certain grade of bolt through equivalent steel attached to the chasis of the car, lines and fittings are different to the cooler itself and will be tested (I dont know how, I presume pressure tested). rose jointed arms cant pass, coilovers cant pass unless u provide specific valving specs, brakes are as easy as doing a brake test and being bolted down with the correct grade bolt. Those are just for your common knowledge

interstate cars can be defected, the defect is specific to that state but the warning can also be transferred if it does not meet the states law in which the car is registered.

I've Been pulled over, the copper didn't seem to care about the high mount turbo.. And it's high.. Like cut re inforcement out of your bonnet high.

They care more about your pod filter and how high it is.

Also your right there dave, interstate cars can be defected.... It's funny some of the looks you get when you go to a shop to get a car cleared that isn't registered in that state.. Paper work is a bit of a mess haha

    • I swear at my GKTech ones every time I have to take them apart and replace a spherical. But I wouldn't swap them for anything else. They absolutely slay every other option, at least in terms of how they actually work. You sure you don't want to live with bearings? I mean, they don't have "ball bearings". They are rod ends and sphericals throughout. Tough as nuts, even though I have found more than one way to wear them out.
    • From when I was looking at getting the 86 engineered for the turbo, the joint said to put in a few euro 5 or 6 cats, then tune the car on a nice clean E85 tune When I was looking at a turbo for the MX5, it was basically the same thing, a couple of cats and a nice clean tune Although, it will depend on the year of the Jeep IRT emmisions standards required, and what mods are done, especially if it has a newer engine installed that requires a higher Euro
    • Yeah - but it's not actually that easy. There are limits for HC, CO, NOx and particulates. Particulates shouldn't be a concern in any petrol engine unless trying to comply to the very latest Euro standard. But getting a tune right so that all the others stay within limits AT THE SAME TIME is not a trivial exercise. You couldn't possibly get it right by just guessing at the tuner's dyno, unless he had a 4 gas analyser up the pipe, which is not often the case these days. It used to be. Every decent shop that did "tune ups" (as opposed to tuning) would have a 4 gas analsyer. Perhaps there's still quite a few of them around these days. But most "tuners" are only watching O2 and power readings.
    • Slight segway but the most expensive part of the whole thing which I would have thought would only be required for an engine size/type swap, not a VIV test, is emissions testing.  That's when you get into the big bucks.  I can't remember the exact price now but I got quotes for the GT-R based on swapping to RB30 (not that anyone bothers doing it legally anymore...) and it was around $4500 just for that alone.  The guy that does them manipulates the tune on the vehicle to make sure it passes.  The cheaper option is to book into Kangan Batman Tafe (I think that's where it was) and hire their tester.  Allegedly you're not allowed in there with the car though so not in a position to tweak anything to make sure the vehicle passes.  I'm sure in this day and age of ultra tuneable ECU's you could get the tuner to program a special efficiency (clean) tune that emits the lowest amount of particulates possible that would pass the test.  It might only make 50kW's but as long as it passed who cares!
    • I'm sure he has left signs, or, he is looking down, laughing That's my cunning plan for when I leave, lots of half finished projects, with no rhyme or reason of where I was actually up to, just to keep everyone on their toes
