G'day..I'm thinking of making a switch from a 290rwkw R34GTT to an EVO 7-9 when the right one comes up at the right price and right time...we will see....Currently running a Precision 5558 on 98 petrol and intending to run the EVO on 98 as a purely street daily car with 1-2 track days a year.

Question is -will a 250awkw EVO feel more crazy on the street and give much more excitement coming from a 290rwkw rwd r34??

250kw because that seems to be the EVOs sweet spot with mild mods and probably 300awkw with E85. I'm not a fan of going sideways, wheelspinning/ going nowhere and looking like an ass - I rather something that hooks up and is gone before everything else and the EVO is one of the best at that, GT-R not an option because they don't offer any value for money.

So rather than get into a vs debate, I would like to know what its like going from a 300rwkw rwd to a 250awkw EVO? From people who have made the switch.. cheers R

Evo would chew the 34 up for breakfast. Be aware that the real strength of the Evo is carrying corner speed so you have to be a committed driver. A 200awkW Evo driven correctly would in most circumstances walk away from a 300rwkW Skyline, making more ground on the corners than it's losing on the straights. 250kW would basically lose less ground coming off corners and down the straights.

Whether it's going to feel as exciting on the street would depend on how it's driven and how long you intend to keep your licence.

yeah Aaron was as fast as my 300kw 33 around Sandown in his stock evo 7..was a slow day and we're both pretty shitty drivers I guess but just gives you an idea of the evos potential...Personally I still like the skyline better...the evo has the ability, but lacks the class of the Skyline..

If something newer and 2 extra doors is what you're after though, it ticks the boxes

I drove a 210-220 kw Evo X (I know, not the same car) and it was like night and day. If you want to drive on the street enthusiastically, you're going to have a great time going around curvy roads in one.

You could also do it in a GTR, you're just going to need to give it more RPM.

Given your first post, I think you're going to enjoy an Evo far more. Find someone who has one and ask to ride shotgun and you'll know within about five seconds whether its your thing or not.

I owned an R34 GTT, then went to an Evo 7 with 200awkw, and now to an r34 GTR.

Evo shat all over the GTT in Cornering, comfort, low to mid range power/torque. Evo felt allot quicker due to 21psi vs 13psi.

BUT, as someone who loves to drive, i got board with the Evo fairly quick. Just too clinical and seems to drive itself. The 4g63 motor doesn't sound as nice as an RB either

Evo to 34 GTR. Different story altogether.... GTR FTW

As above really, the Skylines are good fun with 300+kw, evos are awesome too

You'll get bored at some point of whichever you have so if you've never had an evo or similar you should try it out

You're more likely to get done for a high speed infringement in the evo but maybe more likely to get done for sustained loss of traction or careless use with a skyline which about sums it up? :D

Edit: the sustained loss of traction is from traction issues, not trying to bake it as such

I run my neighbors' EVO9 that has 240awkws in a straight line. My R33 had 380rwkws on vnt system, it pulled away in third gear after 140KM/H, that was with Mickey Thompson 275 ET tyres also.

So you pulled away, or the evo did? Quite interesting that this thread came up, as I have just sold my gts-t, and are now looking for some all paw fun. Big fan of the evo 6 shape.. Something about it. Just gets me jiggy!

Would love an evo 9 as the stock turbo is a weapon in itself on ethanol.. But the evo 6 shape is just too good. Too bad evo 9 turbo costs a pretty penny!

/\ quite often a decent skyline will eventually pass or pull away if it's a straight line & you reach a high enough speed, which usually doesn't happen on the road

Unless its godzilla.....if we're going to go all fast and furious on this..... the skyline GTR will outlaunch the mitsi evo every time. I don't know how many times i watched my wife dispatch evo's to the 60ft. But GTS-t a different story.

^ might also snap the output shaft, chew up a transfer case too if you're a rough driver

my friend thought it could light up all 4s in front of my house, clutch dumped it at 7k.. wasn't pretty LOL

You can treat a Skyline (minus R32 GTS-t) like a dirty hooker and it will take the abuse - you do that to a princess EVO and it will have a mental breakdown and PMS for weeks..

However EVO > Skyline in terms of performance, handling, comfort, doors, room for sex

I pulled away.

on the same time it was with a special turbo that built 23psi at 3500rpm.

Thought so, just wanted clarification that the extra 140kw actually did something ;)

If there is a large enough gap in horsepower/torque, then yes. Otherwise if it's basically neck and neck respectively, it's usually the other way around due to the Evo having less weight off the line, by the time the weight is a non-issue, the Skyline (or whatever other car) will simply keep accelerating at the same speed as the Evo, albeit a few car lengths behind. I understand that the 4 banger is making less power down low, but the revs are not likely to drop below 5k rpm, or even 6 depending on how it's set up. But you're right, this doesn't usually happen on the road :D

Same goes for tough Supra's that race litre bikes (as per youtube), they lose a few lengths on the jump, but after that it's basically the same rates of acceleration.

Dependant on power level, of course. Stock for stock, completely agree with you. 400awkw? Hmmm. Evo's in the states lay down some pretty skinny 60ft times.

A 380kw skyline can potentially do a 10 second quarter..

I doubt a 240kw evo can do that...

I doubt a 240kw skyline could either :P:D

Hahaha! Youtube search "evo blows tranny", some pretty hilarious results.

Sheptrans (I think) have transfer case/diff/gear box strengthening options for the Evo crowd in the states. At a minimum, I'd like to imagine that all Evo owners who 'drive' their cars are wise enough to realise this is the first big weak link. To have a bulletproof transfer case isn't *that* costly in the long run, same goes for the diff. Google search "golden ratio evo box" will give you the company that makes a tough gearbox for what really amounts to loose change.

Some good insight in this, I likey.

Not really fair to compare a 380rwkw GTsT to a 240awkw EVO ay, how about a 240rwkw GTsT vs a 380awkw EVO - that would be a total rape.. LOL.. You would expect a 380kw r33 to pull away from the 240kw evo though, otherwise it would be pretty embarassing with all that power - I'm pretty surprised the EVO managed to keep up till 140km/h. Meaning on road/ street speeds its almost unbeatable

    • Oh bugger ! Your right ! Good old hydrogen sulfide. Takes me back to the good old school days !
    • I've owned a few scooters over the years, a Vespa PX oil burner was my first scooter, followed by a few others, including a little 50cc BeeWee that I used as a barracks bike, and I've had a blast on all of them, they really are the cheapest for of city/suburb transport around The only issue with scooters in Australia is lots of people look down on them due to their size,  maybe they need a big bike to make up for something else where they are lacking, unlike Europe and Asia where every man an their dog owns one, and now that filtering is legal in NSW, local traffic is never a issue Not to say I haven't owned my share of big cc bikes over the years, but they were for more blasting through the hills or Hwy riding where it needed to sit on Hwy speeds Safety wise, I ride like everyone is always trying to kill me, everyone is running a red, or running stop/give way signs, or generally asleep at the wheel, which most people are duringtheir commute, I also ride really safe, and give myself, and everyone else enough room in case I need to pull some hasty evasive actions, I've done a few rider training days over the years, which has come in handy on more than a few occasions  As for mods, there's nothing really, and yes your right about aftermarket exhaust, all you get is loud and obnoxious noises from them, like every 250-300 cc you hear with a aftermarket muffler, in saying this I did put a rear muffler from a 125 Aprilla on one of my old 125 scooters, it was horrendous and no amount of full face helmet and ear plugs would dampen that noise As for coming from the Harley, and what a overpriced POS that was, I no longer do big rides as my poor old busted joints ache after about 1/2 an hour of riding, long cruises are so much more enjoyable now in a car, so a big bike would be pointless
    • Oh wow, it's easy to forget how cheap these can be. Probably the cheapest way to travel. Though people in cars here tend to be morons and I would not feel very safe. Were scooters ever big in Australia? It used to be the thing growing up in Europe ~20 years ago. 50/70/125ccm Peugeot or Yamaha and some others. Utterly obnoxious Polini race exhausts. Kick stands that slant as much as possible. So loud. So much noise for really not moving very fast at all. But it felt cool at the time. Not sure where I'm going with this, but there is an aftermarket for mopeds! Though I'd have pictured you more for a Goldwing kind of guy after growing out of the Harley.
    • You need to know I am sorry for this.
    • As the MX5 isn't apparently "manly" enough, and I need something for runs to the local shops, and also take to my part time job at the salon, basically I can keep the MX5 away from car parks and stuff......like "flying lockers", I was wondering what I could buy to fix this issue LOL, I pick up a new Yamaha 125 Delight this arvo from Trooper Lu, basically a R1 that you can fit a slab of beer on between your feet, also, it was $29400 cheaper than a R1, so actually it's 2 x better than a R1
