Hi,

Just wondering when the standard turbo spools up. I havn't actually looked at the turbo to make sure it is standard but i guess it would be.

Anyway it spools up at about 3500-4000rpms. I thought it would be a bit earlier.

Is there anyway to advance the spool up?

I installed a FMIC yesterday and it didn't make heaps of difference. It made it feel more punchier, as in, it hits full boost at once rather than building up.

anyway there seems to be a pretty big flat spot in 2nd when i hit 75km -90km and then 90-100 is good. I heard that resetting the ecu every so often can improve these problems but not sure as I havn't done it yet.

I think a powerfc is next on the agenda.

R33? Flatspot? Running too much boost.

Stick around 10-11psi.

3500-4000rpm for a R33 stock turbo is way to high.

Thats around the territority of the ol' RB20 running 1 bar or so. (Depending on driving conditions)

I have a R33 S2 and it spools between 3500 and 4500 running standard psi...goes like a dream for me...advan is puttin it up to 10psi for me in couple of weeks and throw it on the dyno and see wats goin on...but i dont see a prob with mine

it goes well. just a lil flat in spots. mainly in second gear- higher revs.

I have a boost controller which is set to 10psi but dont use it daily.

now i have the fmic i probably could run at 10psi. Might try later. Just have no where to test the car properly. 70km speed limits all the way from work to home :D

Was just interested to see whn it should spool up.

ive got a stock intercooler and i hae no probs...i get low boost at over 3500rpm then the baby kicks at 4500rpm nicely ...il b interested to see wat happens wen advan puts the boost controller on at 10psi wen at stock boost it goes this well all ready...just pick a straight quite road at night and test it like i did lastnight u can really see how well it runs in the cool air of the night ...im way impressed

uhh, i probably mean hitting boost like 7psi at 3500

I spose it kinda builds up b4 then. havn't taken much notice. since the fmic it seems to hit all of a sudden at 3500. gives that sinking feeling. I just thought it should come on full boost earlier.

still i think i want to get an electronic boost controller (only have turbosmart single stage atm), i've heard they handle things a bit better.

Hey Jaff.

I had a similar problem on my R32 when my ehaust manifold gasket blew out. the turbo just seemed to take longer time/higher revs to start pumping out decent gas. in case you're curious my car made a horrible noise coming from the manifold on startup, sounded like a tractor? weird. give it go before you shell out big bucks. good luck.

meh to rb20det all round..

JaFF: sounds perfectly normal.. One way you can reduce the spool up is to add an exhaust camgear (i noticed a fair change with this in), get cooler air in (shield pod, or air feed it), reduce rotational mass (flywheels, etc), also try reducing the backpressure of your exhaust system will probably help.. maybe a dump pipe or get it heat wrapped. Electronic Boost control also helped mine spool up a tiny bit quicker (or at least smoother).

I think the smoother and faster the engine revs to a certain point, the quicker the turbo will spool. There is probably proper physics there somewhere which somebody can explain.

    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
    • Agreed, and in particular the earth strap that should go from the subframe to the chassis but it often broken or left off. There is a section in the R32 workshop manual you can follow for troubleshooting if you don't see anything suspicious, and depending where you are (there is no location on your user profile) you should be able to get your hands on a second hand replacement unit still if needed
    • Yeah they mention as a R34 for 2.5 Turbo...but then again thos "small" were also for R34 by that different site. But i look into it and that 310mm EBC is for R34 GTT. And by those you linked the specs are the same 🙂    EDIT: I found these on one site here: DBA 4000 series T3 DBA42304S They are 310mm...and it says are for R34GTT...are there good? EDIT2: ok they have pads too.  What "color" should i get for street use? I dont want/need some noisy ones...(and if they are not that dusty that is good too)
