hey, ive currently got a rb20 32 with the following mods: front mount, 3" catback, pod filter, boost controller running 12psi on an rb25 turbo. im wanting to upgrade in the near future chasing 210kw+ while retaining good response with the following setup; hks 2530 or garrett gt2860, nistune, 440cc injectors, as for supporting mods thinking fuel pump, alloy radiator and hd clutch. am i missing anything/any extra suggestions?

Bigger injectors and turbo will require an aftermarket ECU and some dyno time for the security of not blowing everything to bits.

I personally would look at a Haltech or similar also you'll need things like quality fittings on the fuel system and bigger fuel rail ect.

Also a bigger throttle body and a halfway decent intake plenum help.

Oil coolers are a must too since you live in aus.

I know its money but over engineering things for slightly higher than your aiming is never a bad thing.

Also a quality boost controller with individual boost profiles is good too.

I use a Greddy pro comp2 and have a low and high setting for regular driving/ rain and going fast.

never thought about oil coolers, i was going to get parts that directly replace the oem parts so i dont have to fiddle around getting everything fitted up. its my first turbo car so i dont know much about modding but what exactly does a bigger throttle body and intake plenum do?

There is no need, not now, not ever, to change the throttle body or the plenum on an RB20 even if you're chasing 50% more power than your target.

Your Nistune idea is fine - it will do the job perfectly.

An oil cooler is a good idea. Buy a quality kit brand new if you're going to do it. Not some cheapy linglong brand or secondhand.

Don't buy 440cc injectors. That number implies that you're thinking about GTR injectors. Waste of time and money. Just buy brand new Bosch EV14s of >700cc rating and be done with it. They will work fine even at your lower initial power level target and will also allow you to make more and/ore go to E85 if you feel the need. They will also be brand new, not busted arse 2nd hand shit.

Consider one of the Hypergear turbos instead of the ones you listed. A simple highflow of the RB20 turbo will more than adequately give what you're wanting, or he has a couple of brand new options also. Much much better value for money. Also not busted arse second hand shite.

Well I personally run a Greddy throttle body and a slightly larger intake on my RB20.

I did it for insurance as I run a Precision turbo PT5558.

I will however admit that I had professional assistance building my engine.

i was actually going to go for deatscwerks new injectors, they also have 550, 650, 800, 900 and 1200cc, my current injectors have played up on me already so i wasnt going to run the risk of getting 2nd hand, as for the turbo is there anything specific you know of that would work? i hit full boost with my current rb25 turbo at 3000rpm, i dont want anything laggier and quicker spool up would be better, dont mind forking out a bit extra for the turbo if its something good hence why i was thinking on one of the above (new)

I have similar mods but also a walbro 225 fuel pump wired in at 13.5 volts this increases fuel capacity slightly so I can run higher boost without leaning out on the standard injectors.i also have a mines ecu and I only run on premium 98..car goes very well and revs nicely to 8000.at the moment with my 3 degrees negative camber it wheel spins on boost in first and second gear.getting rid of the camber soon.they say ceramic turbo never boost past 13.5 but I been running 15 with no problems.maybe if you drifting may be another story also get a good afr wideband fuel mixture gauge.real important to monitor mixtures.on 15 psi I am running on full boost 11.1 which is safe.this tell me that my injectors are suppling enough fuel and im not running lean.apparently they say mines computers are shit, but I have not had a drama at all and ive had the car for 2 years as a daily.

I am in the process of installing the following mods..kinugawa td05 18g 8cm exhaust housing, nistune ecu,700cc injectors,z32 afm,,new recoed head, and tossing up whether to instal hks 264 9mm lift cam shafts....I don't drift it so I think this will be more than enough for the street.the rb20 is a awesome motor.i nearly bought a 32 gtr but I think as a daily the gtst is a better car.

you get dickheads on the forums just ignore them..they are like bored housewives.alot of the rb20 stuff links don't work.and there are a lot of awesome people with good advice...good luck

i dont think ill push the current turbo past whats recommended (14psi max i think) because its my daily and i dont have a huge budget, would rather play it safe, i guess i'll do a bit more research on turbos, see if theres any other alternatives, i plan on getting gtr after im done having my fun with this car haha, nothing against the gtst and rb20's i love my car but i think a gtr would just have that bit of extra presence on the road

It isn't high boost that kills ceramic turbos. It's high shaft speed. Shaft speed is a function of flow (and boost, but never mind that for the moment). An RB25 turbo flows more than an RB20 turbo and so will make more boost at lower shaft speed when put on an RB20. Ergo, you CAN actually run at higher than "sensible" boost levels at the same level of risk as running "sensible" boost levels with the 20 turbo.

But there is still risk. These things can and do die at stock boost.

Go have a look at the Hypergear site. The RB20 offerings are clearly findable.

    • I think you're really missing the point. The spec is just the minimum spec that the fuel has to meet. The additive packages can, and do, go above that minimum if the fuel brand feels they need/want to. And so you get BP Ultimate or Shell Ultra (or whatever they call it) making promises to clean your engine better than the standard stuff....simply because they do actually put better additive packages in there. They do not waste special sauce on the plebian fuel if they can avoid it. I didn't say "energy density". I just said "density". That's right, the specific gravity (if you want to use a really shit old imperial description for mass per unit volume). The density being higher indicates a number of things, from reduces oxygen content, to increased numbers of double bonds or cyclic components. That then just happens to flow on to the calorific value on a volume basis being correspondingly higher. The calorific value on a mass basis barely changes, because almost all hydrocarbon materials have a very similar CV per kg. But whatever - the end result is that you do get a bit more energy per litre, which helps to offset some of the sting of the massive price bump over 91. I can go you one better than "I used to work at a fuel station". I had uni lecturers who worked at the Pt Stanvac refinery (at the time they were lecturing, as industry specialist lecturers) who were quite candid about the business. And granted, that was 30+ years ago, and you might note that I have stated above that I think the industry has since collected together near the bottom (quite like ISPs, when you think about it). Oh, did I mention that I am quite literally a combustion engineer? I'm designing (well, actually, trying to avoid designing and trying to make the junior engineer do it) a heavy fuel oil firing system for a cement plant in fricking Iraq, this week. Last week it was natural gas fired this-that. The week before it was LPG fired anode furnaces for a copper smelter (well, the burners for them, not the actual furnaces, which are just big dumb steel). I'm kinda all over fuels.
    • Well my freshly rebuilt RB25DET Neo went bang 1000kms in, completely fried big end bearing in cylinder 1 so bad my engine seized. No knocking or oil pressure issue prior to this happening, all happened within less than a second. Had Nitto oil pump, 8L baffled sump, head drain, oil restrictors, the lot put in to prevent me spinning a bearing like i did to need the rebuild. Mechanic that looked after the works has no idea what caused it. Reckoned it may have been bearing clearance wrong in cylinder 1 we have no idea. Machinist who did the work reckoned it was something on the mechanic. Anyway thats between them, i had no part in it, just paid the money Curiosity question, does the oil system on RB’s go sump > oil pump > filter > around engine? If so, if you had a leak on an oil filter relocation plate, say sump > oil pump > filter > LEAK > around engine would this cause a low oil pressure reading if the sensors was before the filter?   TIA
