Hi, just noticed inner boot on drivers side srive shaft split badly. have noticed clunking noise but unable to locate problem. could it be the cv joint? weve had no clicking noise. can move drive shaft in joint , seems a bit loose. should there be any play in it?

They can slide in and out easily, but there shouldn't be any slack in the CV when twisting the shaft forward and back.

Just take it to a driveshaft specialist, they will be able to rip it out and diagnose the problem. If you need a new shaft I have one here, if the boot has been split for a while it will be flogged from water and crap getting in.

Hi, Thanks for reply Scotty. I'm in NZ. I think ill just replace both cv's on that side and be done with it. When I twist the shaft the whole assembly moves, not alot but i suspect this is the clonking noise. If i wiggle it quckly i can hear a bit of noise. Maybe if it's only inner cv you dont get the clicking noise when turning?
