Can anyone tell me or point me in the direction of some information about the G35/37 X awd systems, specifically about the electromagnetic clutch pack actuator?

Unless I am using the wrong words, nothing much is coming up.

An electromagnetic clutch has it's benefits, simplicity being one, but I like the hydraulic pack.

I am having transfer case slip atm, I was thinking of bumping the attessa pressure to compensate and hopefully help the clutches last longer in the next transfer case I fit. With electromagnetic you would have little control over clutch pressure, but it would be steady.

If your having transfer case slip Scotty you can sort it out with a new clutch pack arrangement (rearrange the order that the factory plates sit Mod) so it comes on firmer without slip.

Im getting another transfer case from Barry (birthday freebie) to mod mine, might be/should be enough plates left over to do another case.

Will show Barry how its done after i do mine so he can start offering the service. (If your too lazy to do it yourself)

I think it's just worn out Peter, I have another 5 here though. Perhaps that's a better option, although bumping the pressure on the hydraulics isn't hard either.

I assume you can fit more clutches by using thinner plates between, similar to auto transmissions? I will speak to you about it next time I get over to Edge mate.

the pressure switch on the hydraulic pack can be changed for a higher pressure hysteresis I think.

I have 5 Attessa units here to fix, all need pressure switches anyway. They switch off at 220psi stock afaik.

They are variable.

From my understanding they apportion a set percentage up to 30km/h, then drop into rwd until slip is detected.

The snow button also locks a set percentage up to something like 60km/h along with throttle restrictions.

It's a fairly seemless system. You don't really feel it working, it just grips.

Cause not many people know they exist, or know how to make one work....?

Mine has certainly has never had an issue, and I haven't read of any others either. It certainly doesn't have the issues associated with pumps, hydraulic actuators, etc.

I found the FSM for the G37, no reason why it shouldn't work.

The electromagnetic unit has a linear relationship between current flow and torque.

Reuse the factory skyline wiring, trick ecu into think everything is there. Drive the EM ets actuator via a solid state relay that can handle higher current if the hydro ecu can't handle 5amps (or possibly a bit more).

Factory G37 logic is cut the 4wd when the transfer case fluid gets over 80deg C. You could easily make use of the hydro ets reservoir low oil switch to warn you via the 4WD light that the oil is hot.

Then make the EM ets actuator fit in a gtr transfer case, thats the unkown.

Doable like anything, very tempting...

    • The jack pad placement always had me scratching my head. I only have a small section to work with on both the E90 and E70 (and insert new project car here ) and I could see lining it up to be a bit of a bugger. For me, the E90 is just too low and needs small ramps and then the front centre jack point is a bit tricky to line up (it's half way down the subframe and about the size of a tennis ball, its really hard to see unless your head is on the ground), so I definitely like the idea of not having to do a multi-stage jack and just sliding these bad boys in under the sides. There's only one small point at each corner, so I can't jack AND add a stand on the same corner. Or, maybe I can and I'm too nervous to try. 😟
    • Is this not the biggest deal of all? I was hoping the whole "will slide under cars with skirts etc and lift evenly quickly with minimal fuss" was the entire point of such a device?

    • Yeah I've got one of these, Quick Jack not Quick Lift, but your link looks like a good copy For me, it's better than no hoist, but it is definitely not as good as a hoist  It lifts the car about 60cm which is a nice working height compared to regular stands and it is only under the sills so it doesn't get in the way like regular chassis stands do.  No need to use regular stands, it has a safety lock on it. On the down side it is really heavy/unwieldy to drag into place, and you have to place it after the car is there (no option to drive the car to where the frames are. You need to try and line it up with the proper sill points which is hard as it swings up in an arc and there is surprisingly little adjustment in the distance between the rubber pads for different car lengths. Not a big deal, but in practice a jack + stands is probably quicker. Also there are hydraulic lines to each side and you need either a 240v or 12v source to power it depending on which option you have, I use 12v as I always seem to have a battery around.
    • Finally addressing my catch can and oil setup Plan is to do as much as practical without having to remove the motor or pull it apart. (no back of head to sump drain/breather or oil restrictors) First step is a set of full length baffle plates from Hypertune and a Tomei cam cap stud kit. I could probably have laser cut and bent up my own ones but this took any guess work out
