OK, pretty much this has turned into quite a saga with me.

A little while ago I got a local workshop to change the timing chain as it was start rattle/ play up, a month or 2 after that my car started to miss, not rev and after a few days actually started to stall completely (not great while doing 70kmh in traffic).

I took it back to the same work shop and was informed that it was the cam chain sprockets that had given up and were putting the timing out. This was February this year, I've been given the run around ever since, parts ordered/not ordered/they're coming only 2 weeks away/usual workshop bulls**t.

The owner told me that he was getting them through a Japanese supplier as Nissan Australia was hellishly expensive, mind you still coming in at $1200 for the parts. I have spoken to Nissan and they informed me if i buy new through them that they will be $1300 EACH and I need both - for this price I could buy a whole second hand engine...

Before I bite the bullet and do this i'm wondering if anyone would either know of someone who can source these parts new for me, or that has an engine I could grab some second hand off.

On another note, this is the worst experience i've ever had with a Japanese workshop (and ive come across some pretty average ones), they've had my car 6 months and still no parts, i've had to buy another car to drive in the meantime and its gone past the point of doing my head in...its a joke

Any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

What a saga. Somethings smells bad with this. You're right, for that money you could buy a wreck & strip for parts.

If you know the part number/s, do a price check at http://www.amayama.com/. That will at least give you a starting point to determine if you are being touched up.

Good luck with getting this sorted out. You must be a patient guy to be getting the runaround for 6 months.

Thanks guys, Its definitely the sprockets as you can hear them clacking/clunking when you come off load, and they slowly got worse over a period of a couple of weeks.

Much appreciated Scotty, I've actually bought an AFM off you in the past (i'm local to you), I will shoot you a PM later today.

Comsman - Everyone's got a threshold, I actually had to get my old man to talk to him the last couple of times as once when I rang he refused to talk to me and hid behind his secretary who subsequently copped a blasting, was about to go round and starting throwing things at him until my old man talked some sense into me.

bummer you didn't post this up a couple of weeks ago.... i just sold a complete brand new set on ebay for only $530 this was for both sides sprockets magnets sensors and covers.

a lucky guy in NZ got himself a bargain.

when i first brought my m35 it had a problem and under warranty it was misdiagnosed as these. long story short i drove the car running like a pig for a few weeks, until the parts came in from japan. in the mean time i found a loose coil lead. fixed the problem. took the car back to the mechanic when the parts came in. he said i could keep the parts as they are a common fault and i would prob need them eventually. "Just don't tell the dealer" he said.

I still don't understand where this "common fault" crap came from, I have never seen worn cam chains/sprockets, only broken components.

Perhaps if you were a bit more experienced with these engines; you might know what's going on. :domokun:

So many experts with these now...

He said my prob was the sensors/magnets, not the sprockets.... Keeping in mind he didn't really have a clue anyway as it was misdiagnosed.

It was low on power. He simply thought it was not automatically advancing.

    • Those car show concepts from the 2000's and 2010's like the Floria and IDx were brilliant and should've gone ahead, at least one of them. But neither Honda nor Nissan are thinking about affordable performance any more, which is truly sad.  Even if Toyota's liquid hydrogen ICE development reaches the point where it's commercially viable and the infrastructure to support it, Honda/Nissan would have to wait until Toyota allow fee access to their patents to offer it with any smaller performance models they released to take advantage of it.
    • A sporty manual RWD coupe with a IL4 Honda engine would only be a good thing I assume we won't see anything released for a few years though, unless informal talks and designs have been going on for a few years,  and due to the current, and future, emmisions and safety requirements, I assume anything "sporty" they would do would be at least some hybrid thingie And hopefully anything they are thinking of has nice lines, without lots of plastic and fake bits hanging off it like that horrendous FK8 that looked like it was designed by a 13 year old The other issue of course in the current market is cost, currently the type R is around $70k, a twin is around $50k Meh, I'm old and grumpy and would rather buy a older model car and waste my coin on that than buying anything currently available new
    • Nissan needs to forget about building SUVs in every size possible and bring back the damn Silvia/200sx duo to compete with the 86/brz. Maybe with the Honda type r motor pointing the right way
    • Good to see you followed your heart, got your dream car and have it pretty well sorted out now. I think anyone can get caught out with a seller not being 100% honest about a cars problems. Can relate to all the electrical issues, had similar issues with my first car (mk2 escort) ages ago
