From my understanding, the reason for using a pair of Z32 AFMs on an RB26 is to be able to 'measure' more air flow (through a different calibrated hot wire), not necessarily to reduce the air flow restriction.

And that the original 2x 65mm RB26 AFMs can flow 700+ HP physically - even if they can't measure it.

Therefore the Nismo AFMs at 65mm dia, given they have a recalibrated hot wire element to be able to measure 700 HP, will pose no more restriction to air flow than the 80mm Z32 versions - up to 700hp.

Can someone just confirm what I'm saying, given I'm looking at buying the Nismo AFMs.

Cheers all

Firstly, can I ask whether you're planning on upgrading your turbo's..assuming this is for a GTR? Coz the stock AFM should see around 280-300kw at the wheels before they max out "voltage wise".

Secondly, the Nismo's units are a straight easy fit, compared to the Z32 AFM, which require new plugs and in some cases, minor mods.

I've been meaning to ask pp this but why are Z32 AFM's so popular? When ever ppl list mods to their cars, or you're looking at cars for sale or just the general rate-my-car type sites, the Z32 AFM is listed down on soooo many mod lists?? I'm assuming this is from the 300ZX of the same era as the R32? What's so special that an early 90's AFM? And it's not just on Nissans either, but lots of import cars?

cheers.

I know everything about the the standard RB26 can handle about 300rwkw, at which point the injectors max out in duty cycle (closely followed by the afms at about 335rwkws)

I'm planning on getting that 300rwkw, but in doing so I want a bit more head room, thus changing the injectors and afms will give me greater margin for the future when changing turbos.

It's not really the cross setional area that is the problem, its that the Hot Wire sensor has been calibrated for a different volume of air, and hence when you suck more air through, they run out of resolution.

Isn't the cross sectional area of the Z32 the same as the RB25DET anyway?

    • Breather for it. If it's anything like the GTRs it should run up to the top of a bellhousing bolt.
    • What basics? With these OBD1 ECUs it's not like the ECU will give you any real clues, it's not really doing any sanity checking of sensors/sensor data. My experience is actually a lot of sensors tend to be the source of the issue first and foremost, and checking everything gives you a direction to investigate. MAF/O2/STFT/LTFT should all kind of make sense. You can try little tricks of the trade like tapping the MAFs to see if it triggers a stumble, things like that. But once you've done a compression test knowing whether you have an air leak or fuel delivery problem is kind of hard to narrow down without sensor data. And you don't really know if all your sensors are making sense unless you can interrogate the ECU directly about what it's seeing for sensor data.
    • Absolutely this. Yes, except not vacuum hose. Something oil/fuel safe is a better idea.
    • Like a Stagea, but not as cool! Hope you have enough garage space for this, or is something going to leave to make way for it?
    • The new project has arrived. I have wanted one of these for such a long time, well before that meathead Clarkson drove one in Africa. I really wanted an E34 but I have some medical issues that mean I *really* can't bump my head and the lack of airbags in the E34 made it just too big of a risk.  I don't know why I've always liked these older touring BMW's to be honest, but man I love this car. She's been pretty well maintained for her 243k's with what appears to be only a single oil leak at the oil filter housing gasket. It has a bunch of updates including later model bumper and headlights, 7 series billion-way adjustable seats and it came with a few spares and another set of wheels with legal tyres. I got a unregistered car permit from the RTA and drove it back from Canberra on Saturday.                   First cab off the rank is cleaning it up for blue slip. I dont know how picky they'll be but I figured I'd clean the headlights, fix the oil filter housing gasket, replace the speed sensors (throwing errors) and swap the OE wheels (the M Sport wheels have a big chunk out of one of the tyres.) I also need to replace all 6 gas struts - 2 for bonnet, 2 for hatch and 2 for hatch glass. The car tries to eat me whenever i open any of these. My plan for this car; Ultimately, this is a budget car. I can't afford to throw lots at it and its because I have another car that I got this, if something breaks its no big deal. I will just maintain and repair it really. But eventually I want to do a manual conversion. It actually looks pretty straight forward for E39's and the trickiest part will be sourcing the parts.  I do need to replace some suspension arms or bushes because wow, she's a floaty old girl. She's also fantastically slow. Like really, really slow. When pulling back out on to the freeway on Sat after a quick pull over I needed to wait until no cars were visible before going.  Oh, and the guy I bought it from had a gorgeous R31 GTS-X in the garage.
