Yeah it was... this is normal.

Mercedes are famous for displaying videos of their two door CLK and SL convertibles being turned into barrier pancakes.

God knows how many cars they destroy via barrier, overturns, hot/cold testing etc.

And as a tax and practical write-off, they destroy every part so nothing can be reused.

I remember seeing C4 Corvettes being crushed in Australia because GM Chevrolet could not be arsed bringing them stateside for crushing after NT hot weather testing.
