If you're like me and race on sticky radial tyres instead of slicks and you wish there was a class you could race in that catered to your daily driver rather than a weekend trailer toy, then help me out with some input on what YOU think would make a great "Street Car/Street Tyre Class".

I am looking for suggestions, ideas, input, criticisms and discussions so as to best formulate a new class that lends itself to your street car.

Ideas and points that are open for serious discussion include:

What constitutes a "Street Car"?

What constitutes a "Street Tyre"?

What types of vehicles should be welcomed to compete?

What weight breaks, (if any) should be imposed to keep the racing level?

At the moment I am leaning towards a RWD Street Car/Street Tyre class with breaks for 4cyl/2rotar and 6cyl/3rotar. This is just my personal opinion though and it is open to suggestion and ideas.

This excercise is born from discussions at street meets, drag events, cruises, forums etc and wherever phrases like, "On street rubber" and "In street trim" are mentioned. I really think that there is no opportunity for the guys and girls that race their cars at street meets to compete in a class geared especially for them.

If you want street tyre records go to http://www.hpi.com.au/drag_records.php and whats wrong with SPORT RWD as the tyre used in that class has to be DOT rated which at the end of the day opens the door to non radial tyres but as shown in other threads no matter what we say they are legal, you must have both front seats in the car, use OEM fuel tank, maybe at best they could seperate the RWD and AWD in having SPORT RWD and SPORT AWD

Excellent stuff Adrian! I for one would love to see a class like this evolve :)

"Street car" - hmmm... there are so many ways to go here. Must have full interior. Can use non original seats but must have both front seats and ALL interior trim fitted. Must be driven, under its own power, to the track.

"Street tyres" - Must be a DOT approved radial.

"Weight" - Minimal weight reduction allowed.

Don't shoot me on these suggestions, as I'm just thinking out aloud at the moment.

The way I look at it is, slicks and nitrous are both tools used to get quicker times, they are both illegal on the street and if this is a true street class neither have a place in it, also with the Sports RWD class being so similar if there aren't a lot of changes made like this I can't really see Andra starting another class

all I can think of ATM, will update if I think of anything else

I asked about a radial tyres class back in March when I noticed BF Goodrich are one of the major sponsors at such events as Drag Combat and Jamboree but there wasn't really a class aimed at there product here's what Jason repled

I'm more than happy to fill you in on the future developments within the

current ANDRA Sport Compact class structure. Currently we are running with

a set of classes and rules very similar to the NHRA system in the States,

but being good old fashioned Aussies, we will have to eventually change them

to suit our local racing community.

I'm a firm believer in developing a 'street tyre-untubbed' class to cater

for the rise in popularity of that type of vehicle in the Sport Compact

industry here in Australia. Yes BFGoodrich is sponsoring quite a few

events, and YES we are working with them and other tyre manufacturers in

developing a specific 'no slicks allowed' street tyre racing class.

Currently we have Sport FWD and Sport RWD (which includes 4WD vehicles), and

I will personally be submitting class/rule changes to introduce a separate

Sport 4WD class, and a blanket ban on non DOT tyres and slicks for those

classes.

I think this will keep the racing affordable, interesting and very street

orientated. Not everyone wants to tub their car, and not everyone wants to

run slicks. It's my duty as ANDRA Sport Compact Director to look after what

the racers want, so hence the future development of these ideas.

Just quickly, re-check the rules regarding Sport RWD/AWD as my current copy

states... 'All tyres must be DOT approved. Retreads, Space saver spares,

or any other non-DOT approved tyres prohibited' - ANDRA Sport Compact rules

i think the sport rwd class should go on a slightly different path such as

1) unleaded race or pump gas only

2)oem style transmission( no seqential or non downshifting boxes)

3)no automatic trans brakes

4)no cutting or modifying wheel tubs,floor,arches ect

5) approved street tires only( can be dot or radials)

6) full interior and operational dash

7)no perspex ar lexan windows(glass only)

8)current rego(not necesarily engineered but it will have to have all street equipt...wipers lights ect)

9)seats can be replaced but must have at least 2 seats in factory possition

10)possible to have restricted size tyres according to the weight(eg min weight 2100lb .. 2100 to 2500 lb max tire 8 inch wide....2500lbto 2900 lb max tire 9 inch...2900lb plus can use10 inch tire) 4wd cars will need special rules...

11)minumum weight breaks to apply to engine type 4cyl / 13brotary to be minumum 2500lb....6 cyl and20b rotary to be2800lb

12)i realy love nos but it gets a 200lb penalty for all cars under 3000lb

these are just a few rules off the top of my head atm

i have done a bit of work with the oz mod class and it is more a full on race class aimed at race modified street cars(most beyond rego) that use race fuels as well....re tweaked rules to suit "street " type cars would work well as a typical mazda rx2 with a 13bt would be way under 2700lb so its a bit harsh for guys to put weight in so limit them with tires then adjust weight, he wont make as much power as the other class cause he is on pump gas... it would possibly bring some cars back to earth and KEEP IT REAL :jk:

over all the sport rwd rules are not sobad the just need a little adjustments to suit people s needs

that pre 1980 rule realy caused drag combat to suffer in the early years..

a complete new class is a very tall ask and they wouldnt approve it if they already have one similar

tweaking sport rwd rules is the answer and work out why you dont fit the rules

my 2 c

why does the car need rear seats? my cars being built for drag/circit/drift/steet and will run radial tyres and all std body/sus but the rear seats have been relaced with a half cage, leave the interier alone open as it has no affect on performance.

making people drive to and from the strip also not nesesary, i will probably never drive to the drag stip my car will be regod but i also have a truck so its very easy for me but the thought of being defected on the way home is enough for me to truck it.

but some good ideas, just need to get the big meets ie nationals, drag combat, jamboree to run something similar

Yeah I agree on no rear seat Clint, they don't weigh thaaat much anyway. But it should have the both the fronts and all the trim (doors & dash).

Hmmm... if the car is a true street car then it "must" see use on the street - hence my call of driving it to the track. But yeah, trucking it in is understandable. I still can't help thinking that rego'd cars that 'arrive' on a truck are just "token" street cars.

I'd like to see a class that is as representative of true daily driven style cars as possible. Ok, so it's not a huge crowd pleaser, but it could be once up and running. Just think how competative it would be! You only have to look at David Lee's (Leewah) 33 GT-R as to how quick a true street car can go - a best ET of 10.4 and a best mph of over 140! Even without the nitrous that is a car I'd pay money to watch.

Nitto's are stickier than normal Radial street tyres. Pointless to exclude them.

I think some tweaking of the existing class would suit us better and make it more affordable which Jason said, is the goal.

sounds like a recipe for a field of boring cars, even though my own vehicle would have subscrided to such a formula.

scrutineers would also have to be tyre experts to recognise sticky tyres. eg, Federal is talking about bringing out a sticky drag tyre that looks exactly like their 17 inch street tyre.

I don't think it would be boring at all.

I think 90% of the people on this forum would be able to run in this field.

Ths only people who wouldn't would be those with an engine/transmission swap.

Maybe the tyres would be hard to police, but if you require same wheels on front as the back, it would certainly be a bit harder....

You could also have a "Blacklist" of tyres which are like the Federal tyres. that would be that hard.

Why exclude Nittos and the like? It doesn't make any sense to do that. Any of the semi-comps are fine for use on the street, and many people use them on the street at one time or another. As Chris said, I use Nittos as my everyday rubber on the rear and RE540S on the front.

If it is to be a "street" class, and semi-comps are legal for street use (NT555Rs "may" not be legal in OZ), then why exclude them?

You only have to look at your best 60ft vs mine Bass Junky. Nittos only help if you can drive, which clearly I can't - well not very well with my current power level :D

I think we should look at the question as this.

What constitues a Street Tyre.

I reckon a street tyre is your normal everyday road tyre, not a semi-comp tyre.

I understand that some people drive around with semi-comps on all the time, but I think that's the exception to the rule.

But at the end of the day, its a traction thing, and you can go and buy pineapples and special dampers to set you up for launch, so why are tyres any different.

Also, if you want to be competitive, you will just have to go buy a set if you want to win.

Two schools of thought I guess.

    • The cam I am actually putting in (a few posts up) is actually smaller than my current one. At least duration/overlap wise. All the chop stuff I hear just sounds like an engine running badly, because it is. I then envision driving it around in 1st gear and being massively sad about it bucking to the beat of said chop. There is an idle video of someone with a similar cam floating around the internet, but mine is a custom cam (so is his) so it'll never be the same, plus the fact exhausts are entirely different. What I want to do is put some bullet mufflers/race mufflers in to replace a couple sections straight pipes that currently replace the two extra cats that I don't need. But this is even further down the line!
    • I can tell you now, when the bracket that the little hydraulic ram attaches to snaps, with a subframe, and V8 from an AMG C63 on it, it sounds like someone letting shotgun off right beside you. It leaves your ears ringing, and a huge thankfulness that you never ever put a body part under something heavy that's only supported by a hydraulic lift...
    • Still not a guarantee fix. I used a high quality butyl-mastiq (the black goo that's not really silicone nor polyurethane, same stuff they use from the factory that just spreads out like melty cheese), and I still get lots of water on both sides of the trunk when raining or washing the car. I also suspect the factory spoiler rubber gasket might not be sealing well, so I'm thinking of adding a thin layer of grey silicone around the bolt holes on both sides and see if that's where it also leaks from. The biggest issue is that these cars don't come with a drain hole on each side like other coupes and hatchbacks.
