So is a Greddy E-Manage (Blue) going to be a safe option for very mild tuning, ie removing the mid range timing retardation and leaning the AFR when its going rich? I have seen a few passing comments about them frying the coil packs.

I would go with the Emanage Ultimate over the Blue, I have installed 10 or more recently on M35's and they work fine as long as you don't lean on them too hard. Remember the stock ecu is still moving the timing around, it's not set with the EMU, so you need to leave a few degrees timing spare.

The hard part is finding a decent tuner willing to muck around with it, most won't touch the EMU, probably because they don't understand it's peculiarities.
