Testing Rb20 Coil. Car Suddenly Wouldnt Restart. Adding Lead To Coil To Connect Spark Plug

Recommended Posts

hi mates have a problem with my rb20 hilux that started this afternoon. I started it up and reversed out my driveway. car died when I put the clutch in to go from reverse to neutral (does this a lot when cold. usually restarts straight away. CAR HAS HALTECH E11v2 so prob cold start tune). today it didn't restart. cranked for ages trying to get it going but wouldn't go and battery got too flat.

I changed the spark plugs now so I know there good.

mainly what I want to know is how do I make a thing ive heard of before where you connect a spark plug lead to the coil pack then put spark plug into that like a common spark plug setup so I can look for spark to rule out spark issue. im not sure how to connect it onto the coil

thanks for now mates

I would say you have no fuel then either.

Do the usual, check fuses. Then i would pull cas out and turn by hand to see if the injectors click and I'd there is spark. Then you have to set the timing due to removing the cas.

What fuses should I look for? Since its an engine converted car the stuff is in different places and probably unmarked.

I get fuel pressure at the guage near the fuel rail so fuel pumps are going I believe. Dunno bout injectors.

Setting he timing is going to be shit I rekn. Apparently aftermarket ecus don't set the timing off the Induction loop thing? And I don't know what they have set it too. Or will it just be tdc in regards to setting cas timing?

Like you said due to conversion what fuses do you check? If you don't k ow no way will I know.

The fact the pump is priming might mean the ecu Is turning on.

Fuel pumps wired to start with ignition is bad. Very bad in a crash. Should be controlled via the ecu.

Yea probs bad. I suspect that because they just run constantly once turn the key. Doesn't turn off when priming. Hopefully my ecu isn't dead. I don't believe the e11v2 has any lights on it so can't get quick idea if its getting power

I've done some more looking and thinking.

I hooked up spark plug to coil and prob have no spark.

Then removed spark plug and no fuel on it

I connected another cas I had (unconfirmed weather good or not tho) and turned it by hand with key in the on position. Nothing happened. No spark no injector noise.

My next thinking is I want to check power getting to the ecu and then follow from there. Problem is the haltech e11v2 doesn't have any lights in it to see if its powered up. Is there a way to check power to it?

It's a patch connector thing so the standard ecu plug is still there intact. I am now thinking of obtaining a standard rb20 ecu just to see if it lights up as my test for power getting to the ecu.

Any other ideas mates? Just bought house. Ment to be selling car. dream boats f**ked :(

did some more testing. didn't need standard ecu. I checked it with multimeter. has power.

what would be the next thing after the ecu I could check to make sure power is going out of the haltech ecu?

    • Hey y'all, So i went to replace my outer tie rod end and it looks like my inner is cooked as well. Problem is, the inner tie rod's part no seems to be completely unique, it's not the same as in the other Skylines.  It's 48521-23U25. This is NOT the same as the GTTs or GTRs. If you look online, only place I can get them is Amayama (https://www.amayama.com/en/part/nissan/48521aa325), but given that the "quantity available" is listed as ">1," it worries me that lead time on this will be infinite. Wondering if any other ENR34 owners have found replacement inner tie rods that work and are readily available? Are tie rods not that deep and easy to interchange? I'm in the USA, so if anyone else has found em, LMK! Also - it looks like this part for the Leaf is the same number, except there's a 0 added right after the U. Does this mean anything of value or are they completely different parts? 48521-3U025 - Inner Tie Rod 2007-2014 Nissan | Nissan Parts & Accessories Online
    • There is no difference. The existing turbo and intercooler would very most likely not be suitable for reuse. The existing tune would be meaningless. The issues with fitting things in are exactly the same.
    • Here’s a follow up question, what if you add a super charger to an already turned engine like a rb25det or something. Would the systems in place (inter coolers and exhaust manifold) be a good way to lessen time and head ache? Or would it be more annoying to add a supercharger to the turbo-ed system then designing a new system entirely?
    • Curious if you've discussed this with them, maybe they can remove it for you since you requested it not to be coated.
