gday.

today when i left home in my 33 the needle of the fuel gauge dropped right down, i had a quater of a tank of petrol and only done 300 of my normal 400k's per tank milage and then it just fell all the way past E, like further than i have ever seen a fuel needle ever.

i couldnt smell or feel anything wrong like a mean rupture or leak anywhere so i just figured that the fuel sender sensor thing had fallen off which would be a hassle to fix up but no biggie.

but then after another 30 seconds or so it climbed back up to the quarter line :confused: and kept repeating doing that up and down, so i'm guessing its not the sender as that would just stay down and not move, right?

it stopped doing that and displayed normally for the remaider of the trip. then on the return trip it did the same thing again, (not a cold engine either, was only out of the car for about 1/2 an hour)

anyone experienced this before or able to shed some light?

Intermittant faults can be hard to find. I think the most likely place for the fault would be in the tank.

Try filling the tank to full and see if the fault only happens when the tank is low on fuel. or below 1/4.

If the fault occurs only at a certain quantity then most likely the fault is in the tank.

Does anyone know how to get access to the fuel quantity transmitter?

The transmitter is in the fuel tank, so open your boot and take out the plastic covering the battery etc. You will see a metal plate on the right bottom side of the shelf. This is where you will gain access the the transmitter.

Note: I have never done this before, the guy who installed my fuel pump did it so i am no expert! Just trying to help :-}

okey dokey still happens with a FULL tank, so it drops ALL the way from full to empty in a few seconds, stays down for about 30 secs then all the way back up :D

bloody thing, at least that shows its probably not the sensor though

do you think it would be in the electrics going to the dash/gauge or the gauge itself
