What Actually Damages A Gearbox?

What is it that people do that mainly destroys a gearbox? dropping gears? flat shifting? crunching gears? how is this related to the clutch? What are some of the signs of a box that is on its way?

Also, low oil, old oil, wrong oil. There's been some speculation that oil starvation could be contributing to 3rd gears dying.

when i drained the gearbox oil in my car, it was very thin and water like, virtually clear. My rb20 box was still going strong though i only crunched it accidently a couple of times in a year

Probably wrong viscosity.

Thats interest mrstabby. I never thought about oil starvation in a gearbox but it makes sense

Trying to ram it into third when it doesn't want to go in,can't get third fourth will do done it lots of times over the years. :-)

I'm pretty sure I farked my box lol it didn't go all the way into third and I let the clutch out, which then made a loud bang and went into neutral. Still works fine but will crunch bad if it's cold
