Hello All.

I recently got myself a R34 sedan, and have an annoying miss when it gets hot. One possibility is the coils packs failing which is common on the Skylines. I had a look at the coils and the car has two types of coils in it. Looking on the forums 3 look like they are Splitfires and the other 3 look like Nissan OEM.

My questions are : Am I correct on the different coil types.

Can having the different brands cause issues.

Do I only replace the OEM with splitfires or do i replace them all?

My final question is why would somebody just replace three not all of them, surely a skyline owner cant be that cheap.

Thanks R34_Bunbury

Hard to tell with the pic but the one on the left is definitely not standard Nissan. Having two types of decent coilpacks (as far as SAU is concerned the only ones that are any good are splitfire and OEM) would not be an issue as long as they are still working fine.

My advice is to let the car warm up and then disconnect each coilpack one by one at the clip and listen for the engine sound to NOT change. When you take a clip of and hear no change from the rough sound you know that is the coilpack/spark plug that is at fault.

Thanks for all your replies

Will try the disconnect coils one by one trick if I get some time next weekend, will also look at the plugs. I too would prefer all the same depending on what I find will I will replace them all with splitfires as they are the SAU standard.

Hi L33sh from another bunburyite..

Since it's an used car and you've just taken ownership I would just fork out some coin and replace all the spark plugs followed by a brand new set of coil packs.

If you're after straight plug & play a new set of Splitfires would be the best options, if you're into DIY and a tinkering, go with a set of LS coils.

I would avoid any other coilpacks that aren't OEM (new) or Splitfires. I've used other brands and they're all garbage once you start putting down some decent power, they all fail.

    • Ha ha, that is very true!  I'm too scared to leave it in the position though, it tingles my balls seeing it like that!
    • Which one did you buy? I have always wanted a decent inspection camera but have been unable to tell whether something is cheap junk or cheap junk chunk sold at just a bigger markup
    • Ha ha ha! I know those feels mate I've finally got the garage cleared enough that next weekend I'll do some actual work on my car (hopefully). Unfortunately garage isn't usable after 10am at the moment That said, I've done a lot of work this weekend on helping finalise a friend's Production Race car. Full started Christmas Eve. We're down to about 8 tasks on the list, including "get a wheel alignment". Sometimes it's just easier working on someone else's car or project than our own stuff 😛
    • Ha ha, ended up going it alone.  I just sent it (in a very nervous fashion).  Once I'd released the locks and it didn't automatically start spinning out of control i felt a bit more confident.   It made some loud sounds (cracking and creaking noises) when I first spun it which got the heart rate going again!  I couldn't bring myself to leave it tipped on the side.  I feel a bit more comfortable having back right side up while it sits there. I'd get angry with your last point but you're 100% correct! 😅 Even yesterday I managed to distract myself at numerous times to make a bracket to fit an LED flood light off the back of the house and fix my sons pushbike.  There were other little taks nibbling at my brain for the rest of the day too...
    • Probably one of the more nerve wracking experiences of my entire life! 😂😂 The balance (centre of gravity) is out still but in a direction that gives me comfort!   It's quite bottom heavy still meaning it takes a bit of muscle to rotate it.  The plus side of that is that it wants to to go back to upright.  Better that than wanting to go all stranded turtle on me!
