Hi everyone

My 350GT-8 cvt has a problem in gear shifting. This appears when I drive it for 40-50km. Once the problem start it will reduce the gears by itself and stay at 1st gear. When you keep the car switch off for couple of minutes and turn it back on it will drive for some time without any problem.

It has done 65000kms all together. Any helpful opinion would be highly appreciated.

Probably a sensor fault.. you will likely need someone with a consult2 to figure out what is happening. They can be expensive to fix, and a lot of people have written off the car when they have had problems with this particular CVT.

Please, PLEASE use the search function before starting a new thread - this has been covered DOZENS of times before. And as Sonicii said (and from my own experience) you have basically bought a lemon, and it is more than likely unfixable. These are VERY unreliable gearboxes, VERY expensive to troubleshoot and almost no-one in Australia has the expertise to fix them.

don't know if I would say they are particularly 'unreliable'. the problem comes when something goes wrong.. you struggle to find someone even willing to look at it.. then struggle to pay the repair bill when you do.

Hi mate, do you no anyone who can scan it and find the problem. I have been to few guys and with their tools they couldn't. If u know someone in Melbourne please let me know.

Sorry, I don't know anyone in Melbourne. If you have any decent Nissan dealers, they should be able to check it for you.. otherwise, it might need someone with a consult2/3 clone. I don't think the basic OBD2 tools will access the TCM.

How long have you had the car and how many kms have you done? Do you know the gear oil has ever been replaced? (Just curious) im doing a full flush next week, sump will come off so will have a quick look for any sensors

It is with me for nearly 3 years and I have done about 20000 kms. Just want to let you know one mechanic told me cvs shouldn't be flushed but I don't know it is for a fact.

people have different theories on fiddly gearboxes in a "if it aint broke dont fix/maintain it" sort of attitude. Personally, I think being proactive is a better way to go.

I've just imported my car with 100,000kms and the day after it gets rego'd im doing a full flush on the CVT.

My car is fixed. It was a speed sensor fault. Guy who repaired it was an expert in these cars and if you r in Melbourne and wanting a good machanic contact him. Thanks everyone for their comments.

I have just finished conversion of my gt-8 to 6sp M/T. The only exsisting issue is to customise centre console which i have decided to buy an E-stopp parkbrake system which really is just providing hole for switch......I strongly believe that it is cost feasible to do conversion. Cvt oil is roughly just under $1000 every service interval of 20000km. A conversion kit is around $2000. If you are mechanically knowledged you shall find conversion of a medium factor. What a lot dont add to cost saving is that once M/T is installed you now have your vehicle tare weight under 1500kg ( with cvt = 1550KG). This in New South Wales equates to a yearly registration saving of around $140. I WAS A MECHANIC BACK IN 94' HOWEVER REALLY WOULD HAVE LIKED FOR A SHOP TO CONVERT FOR THE SIMPLICITY OF HAVING A HOIST. I WENT TO 40 DIFFERENT SHOPS AND ALL SAID NO EVEN THOUGH I WROTE STEP TO STEP INSTRUCTIONS. MODERN MECHANICS TODAY JUST WANT TO SERVICE, REALLY ARE YOU SURE YOU ARE MECHANIC!!!!!!!!!!!! FOR THOSE OUT THEIR CONSIDERING CONVERSION I AM HAPPY TO PROVIDE HELP WITH ANY KNOWLEDGE NEEDED DURING CONVERSION.....ADAM---0435729442....SYDNEY :yes:

Also Nissan factory service manual says cvt oil to be changed every 100,000kms. I don't know why you would think 20,000kms is acceptable for an oem box

    • I'm pretty much healed up post surgery so I spent another almost full day out in the shed re-arranging everything to make room for all of the shit that I've taken off the car.  I need to get everything off the floor and away from the car for when I start making a massive mess stripping off the remaining body deadener and then for the the painting process.  Almost got the shed to a point now where I feel I can actually start working on the car again (clean shed clean mind or something!).  Almost 11 years of accumulated car parts, building supplies, tools, junk, etc have taken a long time to get in some sort of order again!  Most stuff is now boxed up and in the back shed if it's not car related.  Most people would still be horrified walking into my shed but it's significantly better than it was before!   For those that saw my separate post the other day, yeah I ordered one.... This version- I convinced myself to stop being a clown, wake up to yourself and realise it will take you 5 weeks to make one by which stage you're over working on the car again...  Maybe I am getting on top of my "mental ailments" and making smarter choices.... $1450 delivered which will take my miserable half-dutch arse a few days to get over having spent that much!  If I don't have a use for it straight away after my car is off it I might even see if there is a "rental market" for them.  See if anyone wants to hire it for a period of time.  $25 a week or something like that.  I'll worry about that when my car is actually ready to come off it though as that might be a while away!! There's now no excuses now for not ending up with an underside you could eat off! Away for kids sport the next few weekends so hopefully can get the rotisserie assembled ready to go for the car to go straight on it the next available weekend.    
    • I always use my Karcher, but it's only a little one that I picked up from Supercheap  The only issue I ever had with a pressure washer was when I was a kid cleaning coaches, they had a hi-po industrial sized petrol jobbie that would strip paint if you got to close I saying this, we have a fairly high power washer at work with a diesel powered heater that sprays water at about 60°c, it works great for removing old wax and road grime on the underbody after some foam cannon action, albeit from a "stand off" distance of a few feet
    • Sorry no - The sandtrap adventure ended the day, happened at the end of the last session. At that time I wasn't hearing any weird noises nor were the brakes shuddering anymore. It was only when watching the videos that I remembered I had these sounds early on!
    • Did the noise appear after your sand trap adventure? Could be something got dislodged and is playing rub rub. Even a rock wedged somewhere.
    • Is there a shroud around the tailshaft spline into the back of the box? They can rub and make a horrible noise if they are not on straight/damaged. The heat might have caused it to grow too much in one direction and rub.
