okay lets continue this story.

new box in. this box had a measly 11,000kms on it. Pulled from a car back in the 90's filled with oil and kept in storage for a mate of mines personal project...which never happened but i got to reap the rewards.

fresh rear hub assemblies as one had started the develop a slight wheel bearing noise at speed under load. last thing i wanted was a wheel bearing failure at speed. fresh studs where a nice touch too

when installing the new box we noticed this with the Clutch slave. have since found out the 15/16" HFM units have an issue where the body of the cylinder just touched the bellhousing before the mounting tabs are flush causing a angled force which results in this over time. OEM nissan unit back on for now. see how it holds as my clutch had required a bigger cylinder due to blowing out the seals in the stock sized ones.

all back together an track day ready.
As expected the super low kms RB25DET gearbox was butter smooth and really changed how enjoyable the car is to drive!

follow up post from the track day coming soon!

Having a blast and matching my old PB when in the first afternoon session...the T3 gasket melts again. The resulting leak effectively creates a gas torch which ended up melting the hose inside my braided waterline so my day in the 32 ended here. Though my mate let me drive the above AE86 in all its stripped out NA big brake glory and so much fun was had!

Still i limped the car home without any overheating.

post track day tear down

another T3 gasket melted. This one was a genuine Nissan complete with flame rings

spent a long time carefully facing both flanges

installed inconel studs and copper nuts (generic pic but you get the idea)

all back together. With the fresh gaskets, inconel studs and copper nuts. Along with carefully facing the flanges and using the Nissan nut retaining washer tabs i have done as much as i can.

The main issue is the turbo is technically too small for the motor and is running outside the efficiency map so lots of heat is generated. So if this doesn't hold i guess the only option is a bigger turbo.

Saw your car at all jap day, love the trak spec cars at those events

oh awesome. You had your GTR on "yy plates" ?

Come say hi if you ever catch me out an about!

gutted about the gasket letting go again, setup looks awesome.

to be fair i never took heaps of car re-facing both flanges when replacing the gasket so i think previous issues with the heat and stretching studs/melting nuts where exacerbated by a slightly warped flange.

Cheers though!

Have had some issues with high speed stability on track so a couple of years ago now i picked up a GTR wing with one of those wank flaps pre-installed reasonably cheap.

Basic simulations suggest it will do something even with the higher roof line of the sedan.

Top Stock GTR wing (only aero surface modelled). Bottom no wing.

the added flap may actually help to compensate for the higher roof line so we'll see

Genuine wing too :D

unfortunately someone had hacked it up to fit a silvia(?)

so the plan is to reshape it as close as i can and have it on a spare boot lid i can swap on and off for track days as i still like the look of the boot lip. I'll likely take off the extended flap too.

I have read this, hello fellow 4 door person.

It was nice to know my own foray into "I'll just do a few track days and just break everything, repeatedly" was not the only one, as I had many of the same problems until I said fk it, turbos can get f**ked, f**king flanges f**king manifolds f**king lines f**king heat f**king wiring f**king diffs f**king gearboxes f**king overheating f**king

And then go do it all again :D

its a slippery slope for sure haha. One minute you have a mediocre daily.. nek minnit you are happy if it lasts a 15min session problem free

Awesome build mate ?. Been reading this on and off and have really enjoyed it. I really appreciate the dedication you've had to this car and wish I'd done the same sorta stuff to mine. I put a neo in my 32 nearly 10 years ago and apart from a few minor mods that's as far as I got. Hearing the sound of yours with the gate open is like a heavenly choir from the gods. Very inspirational look forward to seeing what happens in the future for this car.

thank you! comments like this keep me motivated to continue posting my build diary

no huge updates but it is officially on Club/historic rego "only 90 days" per year allowed but last I checked that is more than the ~10 days a year it has been out in the last few years....

I took it out for a cruise and despite not using more than 20% throttle the majority of the drive it is a world away from the sub 1.5L NA fwd Toyota i have been cruising around in

Everytime I look at this thread it progresses :)

Just a question, are you still filling up your catch can on hard drives? I'm constantly filling mine up now, so as of recent I used the spare head/VCT drain from head to block (not used on NEO motors) and vented that to the catch can. Hoping that would some how resolve crank case pressure building up and pushing all the oil into the catch.

I definitely still get some oil and e85 in the catch can.

I was getting it pretty full After a 15min session but I was overfilling my sump because #RBoilproblems. But after only filling to just below full on the dip stick it wasn’t as bad Maybe 200ml after a 15min session.

i do still want a head drain/sump breather

Seems yours isn't pushing as much as mine.

I fear the motor needs to come out for the both of us and time for sump vents

When filled just above the line I was getting a full and overflowing 2L baffled catch can in 15mins of track driving

but yeah proper oil control and some restrictor a too. And then I guess MLS HG while I’m at it

    • Ok glad you clarified on the frenchy’s options , I was worried about if my oem hoses would fit the new compressor or not if I just bought the bracket/compressor kit ,  didn’t realize they also sold a larger full conversion kit. Hmm may just go oem in that case then to make it easy only because I plan to sell this car to upgrade to a 32 GTR or 34 GTT.
    • Right, here's a video of the basic operation at least.  This is what you can expect day to day when you turn the car on and it boots from standby.  The only thing from a media point of view I haven't gotten working is for it to autoplay plexamp when it turns on from standby (it works from cold boot) but that's more of a plexamp problem as it will autoplay other music players.  Also attached is my one stray cable.  It's part of the screen's wiring adapters but there's just nowhere for it to go in my car.  I've just now done a bit of research and found a matching port on a 2010-2014 head unit with BOSE.  Mine has no BOSE so that's that case pretty much closed I think.  Plugging in the Infiniti AC panel basically did nothing for me, so that's a dead end as well.  Next port of call is to mess with this CANBUS module and see what I can find from it.  I found this resource containing the DBC files for a 2010+ G37 : https://github.com/icecube45/Dash_InfinitiG37/blob/master/InfinitiG37.dbc I'll now have something to go from when I try to extract my CANBUS data so I can see if the HVAC Mode, Fan Speed, Temperature, etc. match and also the gear shifter position.  It's a pretty big assumption that it's just mismatched CAN signals but considering all the devices in the CAN network are talking to each other (AC can be fully adjusted just with no info on screen) it might be a safe one.  I will report back WhatsApp Video 2025-02-26 at 12.49.10.mp4
    • Thanks for that Paul.  Do you think if I posted a picture you'd be able to remember where it went?
    • Sorry Duncan, I didn't get a notification for the replies.  Thanks for responding!  It's a full Android device, but does allow you to use CarPlay/AA as well.  This is the one I bought from NaviRS on AliExpress: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006368602668.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.order_list_main.111.59aa1802JDzQ0E - the 2K 8G-256G CAM variant but it seems to have gone up by £170 since I bought it!  My purchase was £307.14.   It's not the fastest thing in the world but performs perfectly adequately.  It stays on standby unless I disconnect the battery and let it power down, then it's just a fairly standard Android bootup time from cold.  The DSP Equaliser is very nice and made the standard stereo system sound pretty decent compared to the stock screen.  Perhaps I can take a video of it when I get a sec. It *allegedly* supports the reverse camera, but I'm yet to get that working.  It has options for reverse cam (a camera unit can be bought separately) or 360 cameras (also bought separately).  To be fair it doesn't seem to detect that the shifter was put into reverse but I'm working on a theory about this as well.  At the moment I'm going without which is a bit annoying considering the car is an absolute canal barge but so far I haven't caused any damage I'll grab a picture of the wire I'm missing later today when I can get outside.  My theory, by the by, is that not only is the head unit different, but the CANBUS network has different signals for the different years.  I think this because I have a spare AC panel from a newer Infiniti G37 (as opposed to my Nissan panel) which wouldn't control anything except the volume when I had it wired up with the stock system.  I'm going to throw it back in and see if the screen will respond to it.  I've just ordered an arduino CANBUS module so I can have a look at the signals going around the car and see if I can spot anything.  I'm thinking if I can work out what it's expecting vs what it's getting I might be able to translate and relay the signal back but so far just a theory anyway. I also found this on my travels, so far the only one that specifically matches my car: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002822934280.html?spm=a2g0s.imconversation.0.0.33433e5fgttovi If you look at the picture of the before, it has the card reader slot, and the picture of the head unit is exactly the same as the one pictured in my original post.  I asked if they sell the cables separately but sadly they won't.  I didn't want to just buy this one because it's a super old Android version and only dual core - likely slow as hell.
    • As above, you did refill the coolant and burp the system before running it again didn't you?
