Hi guys,

I have a general question for those of you who have moved on from the skyline scene and looked to purchase a new car.

I have driven Skylines (And only Skylines) for a good 6 years now,.and I have loved every minute of it..(almost every minute) ;)

I am looking at getting a brand new Toyota GT86 in the near future, and while I took this car for a test drive and it was quite nice to drive, had ok power and a nice interior (compared to the now ageing R34)..I felt I was lacking the raw excitement of driving a Skyline. I suppose the main driving factor in getting a new car is obviously not having to worry about squeaks, rattles, or the constant thought of when the next little thing is going to need a fix - and it would be nice to have speedy servicing done at Toyota and not have to worry about driving to specific mechanics to look after the car.

I have been down the road modifying my R34 and I have enjoyed it immensely and I enjoy driving it..but lately the thought of having a new car is appealing to me and was wondering if anyone who has moved on from Skylines (who might be still lurking here, or hell, even those of you who came back to the scene after trying something different) would like to share their thoughts and how they felt when they finally sold their Skyline to drive something else.

I guess it might not be so bad as I’m looking to go to another sports car..but I definitely will miss the turbo spool and extra KWs..

(When will they come out with Turbo model already…. :whistling: )

Just quietly if you want a sports car that doesn't rattle after driving it home, don't buy an 86..... They are cheap for a reason

Suppose the main thing is it all depends on what you want from this car... price pays a big part of what is then available.

Also rumor has it a turbo model is in the works.

Hmm I didn't think about longevity..I suppose I was 'wowed' from new car syndrome, but you make a valid point..who knows how long the 86 will last before it starts rattling away..thanks for your input mate.

In 2002 I sold my R32 GTSt and bought a brand new WRX. Absolutely loved the Rex. Since then, I've owned another 2 turbo Subys (06 Fozza and 09 Rex) but have never bought another Skyline. Take from that what you will.

On the "new car" thing, don't waste your money unless you can write it off against a business (even then they are a terrible investment, just slightly less terrible). The new car feeling goes away in the first 6 months, then you're left paying off a massively depreciating asset. The subys tend to have held their value very will in my experience. You might be better shopping for a 2-3 year old car and haggling with the seller. Some good bargains out there.

Seriously you just need to workout what u want in a car. If u get an 86 and with all the performance parts available in a couple of years you will probably be in the same boat as what you are in today with your 34. And then you will say to yourself if I put all that money into you 34 I could have had an insane car. It's a sickness ha ha. But Horses for courses really. If you want a rwd 86 type car, go an nicely set up and tuned S15 and never look back, better car in every way.

My mate in 2012 bought brand new 86. 6 months later, the dash had already bubbled up..... Had to take it back to Toyota to get a new dash under warranty.

Having been inside the 86, it's really not that impressive. Cheap plastic and barley any room. Such a tiny car.

If planning to mod a VQ HR I would do some research first....

Also, turbo pulsar lol. Turbo N13's are the cheapest, most fun way to get that old school fast car feel IMO. Like that time your mate took you in his boosted barina for the first time, except CA18DET in 950kgs that seats 4 people comfortably. With room for dog.

While I love my M35 Stagea, the big worry that's constantly in the back of my mind is that eventually something is going to fail, and I'm going to have to either fix it myself or pay someone through the nose to fix it for me. Newer cars may mean more creature comforts but it also means more parts to wear out/break/fall off.

Accordingly, it's with a heavy heart I've come to the conclusion that my long-term project vehicle is going to be something much simpler, possibly mid-90s or earlier. I may have to replace more parts up front, but they're still cheaper than parts on newer cars, and most are still available NOS.

So...+1 for an S15 or similar. I'd also consider a 350Z because the VQ35 is ubiquitous and there's a massive aftermarket for them.

The best suggestion is used BMW 130i or 135i twin turbo if you can afford it , the 130i are a crazy rear wheel drive rocket . Forget the 86 its a 4 banger and will never be the same as a six .
