Well its not a skyline but since its a classic datsun I think it deserves a thread in here too

Old does mean classic, right?

I'll put up some photos later today, but basically she's a gorgeous 1980 200b with some small patches of rust. We might get round to cutting them out one day.

So far its made it home to the garage after a quick tune (thanks Nathan!) Everything is running as well as can be expected for an old car.

Rust...yep, plenty of that....doesn't look like anything's going to fall off any time soon but theres plenty of holes in the bottom of the panels and sills.

The car is just going to be attacking motorkhanas in Kel and Tosh's hands so it doesnt need to be roadworthy (lucky that). The seats except drivers are gone so the interior is ready.

Future plans.

First thing is welding the diff up, the rear axle is finally off so it will be done in the next day or two. Then chuck it all back on including those complicated looking drum brakes :(

After that....it depends how it runs next sunday, possible plans include:

Needs a new steering wheel

Swapping to a bluebird trx rear axle so we get some nice disc brakes

New springs and shocks....the ones in there look pretty bad....not sure which ones to go for yet

mmmm engine mods, or just whack a ca18det in there

maybe front caliper upgrade if the are having trouble, but probably not necessary.

Can any one say 4th gear on the brakes???

My datto 1600 used to do that.....quite often too. l20 stroked to 2.1 and stanza sss 5 speed. with nissan 720 diff.....(BULK SMOKE):burnout:

diff got welded tonight, back in tomorrow, looks like it will be a goer.

[Jedi Mind trick]

There is no story about my finger

:)

any excuse to avoid taking that diff out I say

/ignores pete and hopes everyone else does too

Nathan welded up the diff for us last night, and we threw it back in today....thanks to Chris for his help, especially with the jigsaw puzzle that is drum brakes...

Everything was looking good......until we undid the gearbox drain plug.

Now of course you never remove a drain plug without opening the filler plug first to make sure there is no problem right? right.

So we took the gearstick off, no worries just lob the fluid in there and everything is sweet.

Undid the gearbox drain plug and out comes 2l of mud (almost as bad as the diff oil, amazing how bad oil looks after 25 years)

Did it up again and started pouring fluid in the hole where the gearstick goes. Realise *very* quickly that the fluid doesn't drain from there to the rest of the gearbox.

Curse

Swear

Have a look at the gearbox and find a filler plug with an allen key hole (which I didn't have either) which will require an oil pump

Give up for the day.....

well, the 200b debuted today, and while it went OK some mods are required, steering wheel, proper suspension, new seat....

....oh, and the smoke got out of the engine...... http://www.hgeconsulting.com.au/dontletthesmokeout.wmv ....guess we'll do a compression test in the morning then look out for a cheap second hand one :)

    • Um. No. Since Matt introduced the TIM it has become a lot easier to deal with the consequences of changing K for AFM and injector swaps. Then, tuning is a f**king doddle. No-one needs to know or care how many grams of air are flowing or any other bullshit. Need more fuel in a cell? Add more fuel. Need more timing in a cell. Add more timing. Need to adjust any of the other tables for warm up and so on? No harder than anything else. Sure - it's not an ECU system for starting from scratch on an arbitrary engine. But then.....it was never supposed to be, not recommended for, and almost never used that way. So.... On your engine, in particular, Nistune/Nissan OEM is about as sophisticated and difficult as banging 2 rocks together. Those ECUs are primitive and simple. There is nothing difficult there. I learnt Nistune from scratch, created new maps with extended axes, interpolated/extrapolated the original maps onto them and tuned my RB20 (basically the same ECU as your 26 ECU) all by myself, more than 20 years ago. And that was long before even TIM.
    • Set of knee pads for a R34. Will fit every model I think. Comes with everything except the rubber covers for the bolt holes. Still in great condition. You will need to drill holes to mount these or use double sided tape. I can do free shipping and will be shipping from the Netherlands with tracking.
    • Nistune needs something like an entire excel spreadsheet in which you build an abstraction layer that converts everything from real units you can actually measure into all of the various tables. The number of unexpected dependencies hiding in how the Nissan ECUs do math is a pretty impressive optimization trick for 8-bit MCUs but good god is it awful to actually work with in practice.
