Although I agree that it's a little weird to spend all that money on your car and not know anything about it, think about it this way:

Mr. X is a doctor/lawyer/porn star and he bought a Skyline GTR... It's not as fast as he thought it would be, so he drives upto CRD with a stock GTR, and drive out with a 600hp GTR a month later and hand Jim a cheque for eleventy billion dollars...

Why would he do all the research and development and learn welding, engine building, flow dynamics, fuelling requirements, engine tuning, etc... etc... Just because he wanted to make his car more powerful????

Wouldn't it make more sense to stick with what you know (your job and career) and earn the money to be able to pay someone who knows what he's doing to work on your car?

Mr. X simply doesn't have the time or the inclination to learn the ins and outs of engine dynamics... All he wants is to make his car more powerful... Is that such a bad thing? dunno.gif

this make sense to me..

I was in rush not able to finish my previous post..

Don't we feel lucky / happy for someone who able to afford that kind of RWKW?

and like I said before, I will simply reply to whom "good on you. mate, got a beast there.."....I would not worry about what's their 1/4 mile time or EC time, why should I? does those number worry me at all? nah..That's their car..

The problem is that the whole IMPORT scene has been brought up with RWKWs as an important fact.

Basically thru the net, magazines, and current import boom, alot of people with little car knowledge are finding an interest in imports, hence there first questions would usually be along the lines of

how many rwkws has it got mate, and so forth.

It has come to this due to media making a huge importance of rwkws id say and the above mentioned.

No, but "powerful" can mean a lot of things. 1000HP is a lot of power, but if its not delivered till 8000RPM is it really that powerful in the real world? To drag out the age-old Mines "Response" R34, that's what I call a truely powerful car: not only does it have power in abundance, but it can actually get it down to the ground, and its useable from pretty much anywhere in the rev range. I have massive respect for that car, whereas another 1000HP dyno queen bores me (or even a car like FLYBYE after reading last months SPEED).

Mr (or Mrs) X. will surely have some idea of the "type" or power they want ie. down low, up high, etc.

Nice example lwells, the Mines R34 is the antithesis to the attitude I am thinking of.

It is the perfect car (apart from terrible ground clearance)

As the Japanese like to say that car has "total balance"

Ah... the Mines R34, the car i look up to and aspire to make my R34 like. It's not a GTR (GT-T) but that's exactly what i'm going for. Response, response, response. So i've decided to do suspension first before any power mods. All ready got good rubber.

One day, i'll get a R34 GTR, and send it to Mines for the full treatment

for what its worth the Mines GTR is a tuning house showcase car, so you'd expect it to be good, the reputation of its maker rides on it. Its also a track car, purpose built.

Imports are good in that sense, you get this car out of the factory and then you can choose what purpose you wanna build it for...

Show, Drift, Dyno, Track, Drag, Commuting etc etc

each to their own I guess, but you can't compare a car purpose built for the track with one purpose built for a top power output.

Dyno cars are very similar to cars built for top speed, while its unrealistic to think that you're gonna ever be able to use the top speed on anything but a salt flat, its still a huge rush to lay claim to a massive top speed.

No doubt, but its also the ultimate expression of a particular tuning philosophy (at least related to Skylines).

While you can't "compare" various tuning styles, I think you can place relative weights on their importance to one's self. I think since my car is going to have to encounter corners that tuning for a dyno or drag is useless. Obviously this will differ for each person, but lets be sensible for a second: I would guestimate that 99% of us can't afford to have a car just for dyno or drag runs -- invariably our cars are daily drivers or at least tun on the streets and around tracks -- so I think "response tuning" is far more relevant for the majority because its about balance and usable power, not outright "my-dick-is-bigger" tuning.

Anyway, that's my overrated opinion

The Mines GTR is not just good... it is spectacular!:boinkcar:

But enough Mines fetishism... (why did Mines_Datsun have to choose that name:rant: )

but you can't compare a car purpose built for the track with one purpose built for a top power output.

I am not so much talking about cars made to run in dyno comps. I am thinking more of cars, especially road cars, that focus on rwkW to the detriment of their performance in driving, be it road, drag, race, drift, whatever.

Nice one fatz. What is it when it's a rental reversed into an armco? :D The ultimate display of giving it a go me thinks.

So is it me or has Roy got a one track mind. Can't even get his mind off gettin some long enough to build some decent power *gotcha*?

i have kept an eye on this thread and are probably goin to get flamed for this post but hey it happens......

Half the people here a drag bashing, "oh drag racing is only pointing your car in a straight line and getting on the gas", " a track much better tests a cars abilities" this is utter B.S!!!! Most of you saying this have draged your own car at a strip, yeah???, or never campaigned a dedicated drag car????? NO, and i hear it nearly everyday at work i didnt need to hear it here!!! drag racing is just as credible as any other form of motorsport...

Its about the only form of motorsports where there is no cheating... as you cant cheat a clock!!!! Everyform of circut racing i have seen or been involved in there are blokes cheating.. Group N rally blokes running group A stuff hoping the scutneers dont see it, pendix J blokes running strokers again hoping the cams official doesnt check the seal tag!!!

Before baggin drag racing do it yourself, its a little different from racing from the traffic lights and its alot more skillfull than alot of you guys are giving it credit for....

Secondly i noticed a post earlier saying " its due to the import scene bringin in people that have little to no mechanical knowledge" thats not quite right but you get the idea!!!! 80% of all people here dont have a clue they only think they do!!!! To many times have i come across people that talk like they work on GTR's day in day out then meet them in real life and the are in IT or something it gets me so cut cause they go around giving advise when they no SH!T ALL!!!!!

Like i said 80% of all people on forums only know what they have read and have never put their words into practice or could even do it, they just regurgatate to others what they have read!!! In reality theres a very select few even on skylines with 8000 members that opinions and mechanical knowledge should be considered as sound or even close to whats correct, these are people who have done stuff like rebuilt engines, gearbox's, tuned computers ect the truly technical stuff...so please dont say stuff like others dont have a clue when its happening right here,,

probably 95% of all people registered here had no prior mechanical involvement with cars till they got there skylines got on here read someone elses experienced knowledge than did a mod themselves, thats fine but then read some more on another topic and now thinks they are an authority on all things mechanical!!!! END RANT HERE

Sorry it was off the threads topic i just been sitting on this awhile it seemed an oppertune time to let it out!!!
