I noticed a small power steering issue the other day and I'm not sure if it a sign of 'bigger problems ahead'.

The issue occurs when you turning the steering rapidly in one direction and then quickly change to turn the other direction, like when you are reversing into a parking spot and you are trying to line up the car as you park. When changing from turning the wheel right to turning left the steering momentarily feels firm (as if there is no power assistance), and then I hear a click sound and it comes good. When I say momentarily, I mean about half a second.

it doesn't occur in any other situation, for example, if I stop turning the wheel for a second, then turn left. no problem. also doesn't occur in the opposite direction (from turning the wheel left to right).

It seems as if there is a valve in the steering rack that is sticking for a bit, and the 'click' sound is the valve opening suddenly. I considered a tie rod end issue, but I wouldn't have expected as much resistance to steering, just the noise.

Bringing the engine rpm up a bit (to run the power steering pump faster), doesn't make any difference.

I am assuming I am probably looking at a rebuild of the power steering rack, but thought I would check here first in case anyone has any other suggestions.

I have checked suspension bushes, and they are all ok.
