For the past year I have been hanging out for a ride in my own GTRs!!!

It has been 15 months since I dragged the race GTR!!! A simple upgrade to push it into the low nines somehow turned into a year long saga. BUT, it is getting close now. Only a few small issues to sort out & it will be fired in anger.

Of course, it only has one seat, & I doubt anyone really wants to strap themselves

on the floor & experience the monster this GTR has turned into. I cant wait.

One of the reasons it has taken so long is I have been sidetracked with my tow ute! It's an XR6 Turbo, makes 320 rwkw, & runs 12s. Heaps of fun.

The other is the street GTR. Since owning it (the one in the first issue of SPEED)

I have banged the engine 3 (three) times. What to do? Better fix it eh?

Now it has a new N1 block (better not crack this one), all the other fruit previously mentioned in an older thread, smaller 272 HKS cams (to make it more streetable),

an OS Giken Sequential 6 speed (keeping the Holinger in the race GTR), & is currently going back together at Tilbrooks this week. Rhemac Motors built the engine last week with brand new aries pistons, gapless rings etc, & it should be a very tough (hopefully bulletproof) engine. I am going to run it in properly this time

(no piston melting 290kmhr blasts) & then want it detuned from the previous 480rwkw tune to around 400rwkw. When I am happy that it is all good, we might put some good juice in it & crank up the boost to around 500rwkw & see what it does in full weight trim at the drags, but by then the race GTR should be ready, & I

will probably leave it as a good street setup & keep it one piece, leaving the drag duties to the lighter, much more powerful race GTR.

I have some good mates in Perth, & you guys have an excellent track.

If I ever bring both cars over for a meeting, & I hope I can one day, then come up & say G,day. I owe Ant & Nathan a cruise, as they both took me for a good strap in their GTRs when I was over there with my ute for Drag Combat.

Cheers,

John

interesting thread.. but i think i have met most of you! and quite a few that have been and gone from the melb thing. Notice a few new blokes on here which has been good.

all have been great blokes..

might be driving down xmas time.. never know, if anything is happening would be good to catch up with a few people again.

We are all patiently waiting for when you bring the R over here John. Will be something not to miss thats for sure..

Reading the article in Speed on your street R (when Doug had it) made me decide to sell my gtst and get a GTR. One of the best articles I've ever read to get the blood pumping thats for sure!!! ha ha Also followed the build up in HPI every issue, that is one of the neatest and thorough cars I've ever seen.

Good luck with the drag R, hope it is not too much longer and the results are worth the wait..

Cheers

Brett

    • Means something is not set up right, tune/calibration related.
    • Finally replaced the previous temporary mesh indicator surrounds (temporary was the last 10+ years 😂) with a 3D printed GTR style version for the front indicators. I think it looks a lot nicer than the old setup and at least the indicators now point in the correct direction rather than angled off. Needed a little bit of tweaking to deal with the intercooler piping but got there in the end. Old and new photos below.
    • It's weird to me that you say this because I'm pretty sure locals with relatively standard standalone tunes (boost/barometric compensated alpha-N) still have driveability issues when they pop intercooler hoses. Maybe with enough data I can just train some kind of model that spits out an expected grams/cyl given every sensor input except MAF like what FCA did with their Pentastar 3.6 ECU logic. Basically stock everything. The main motivation honestly is to have a sensor that can be a decent baseline source of truth. In scenarios you're describing obviously it won't work every time but it seems to me the number of corner cases that exist in MAF load is maybe not as severe and difficult to manage vs ITB alpha-N with some MAP/barometric compensation.
    • What are your plans for your blow off valves? Purely plumb back? How soft will the spring in them be? AFM can be tricky to get super smooth and nice, especially depending on the rest of the system, and then can be very easily upset if something slightly changes. IE, even if you run recirc blow off valves, you could still see issues getting it to behave at certain load points as turbos might start to spool, but you release the throttle but it's not enough pressure to crack the bov open to recirc, and you can end up with reversion which can cause double metering, and hence dumping of fuel into the system, and stalling the engine.   If you're going to run a map sensor for closed loop boost control from the ECU, what makes you want to keep the AFM?
    • It's not bad, it's just not flexible. And say if you have any leaks between the MAF and plenum, well then your load axis goes out the window. Here's a real world scenario, I blew off an intercooler hose last track day, as the clamp decided to Bluetooth itself somewhere. Still continued to do 2 laps and drive it to the pub for a couple of beers then home. Good luck doing that with a MAF setup
