Hello

I am ready to begin saving to buy a bigger turbo for my R32 GTS-T.

I asked a few months ago and I was suggest to try hi flow with Hyper Gear or similar company, GTRS, or one of the new Garrett turbos(dont remember which one).

My goal is 400hp. I want a responsive street car that will go on the highway and sometimes go to the track(no racing). But street car is the main.

Is it still a good choice to go with hi flowing a rb20 or rb25 turbo? Or should I look at something else?

a lot has changed in the last few months of turbo tech for bolt on 20 year old engines. ..

Oh wait. No. That hasn't happened. And won't.

Meaning for the exact same reasons a Hypergear hi flow was recommend it is still the best option for you.

Street car, responsive and RB20 in the same phrase doesn't really get along.

I'm far from 400hp on my 20 and the car is not user friendly on the streets nor responsive for daily driving. Getting a better turbo could help but it won't make miracles. On track though there is no problem of responsiveness, but still far from 400 hp.

Good thing is, you can lend the keys to a person who never go above 4000 rpm without sweating. lol

Smaller HP goal, lower responsiveness goal or bigger capacity engine for street use with a 20.

HKS2530, GT2860RS, the smallest Hypergear hi-flow unit.

You may try an EFR 6258 if you can get a T3 flange welded on the housing.

All these turbo could be called responsive on a 20 for street use and will yield 220rwkw give or take.

Any bigger than this and you will degrade the fun on the streets.

I was waiting till I was ready for the stage of saving up to buy the turbo before asking more questions.

I will start saving now.

There are only 3 realistic options for an RB20 according to the 1998 issue of Hyper-rev

1. 350hp or less (response) 2530 or similar

2. 350 to 400hp (kills the entire bottom end) Trust TD-06 or similar

3. Increase displacement (RB2.2, RB2.3, RB2.4, or RB25)

They reached these conclusions 15 years ago; very little has changed today.

Lose some weight, you'll go faster.

Making 400hp & response from a RB20DET is not going to be cheap.

Making 400hp & response from a RB25DET is more cost effective and you'll spend less time & money.

More money for hookers & cocaine.

But then the tax costs more in Japan or some crap. That's his excuse anyway.

Which I find hard to believe. Why did Nissan bin the rb20?

IMO its a waste of time and money going to a 25 if you want 400hp when a bolt on 20G setup gets you there and is cheap, reliable and frankly my car was awesome fun like this for close to 10 years.

    • Haha actually I did join back then under a different email address,  I couldn't re-activate my account so made a new one! I didn't post much anyway so not missing out on much. Amazing to see how the value of the cars and parts has changed over the years, also ACT section appears to be dead now. 
    • Thanks... It's in pretty good condition overall, probably due to not being drifted/tuned however being a daily driver has taken its toll. Had 100k on the clock when I got it, up to 180k now. Unfortunately it's not 100% dent free, it's got a small dent on FLH side and broken indicator from where I hit a small kangaroo at high speed. If you look at closely at pic #5 you might spot the dodgy trailer light repair my old man and I rigged up as temporary repair! - It's still there due to a combo of needing the car as daily driver and then too lazy/busy to fix properly. I've a couple of other minor accidents accidents as well but nothing major. One required a new front bar and unfortunately the smash repairer ordered the normal gtst one and not the aero bar. Needed the car back asap so just went with it, regretted ever since.
    • I can't believe that anyone is foolish enough to believe that the base maps are for any other purpose than to drive the car up onto the trailer/truck or gently creep it to the dyno. No matter how good they are, they can never be any better than the factory maps**, and only the foolish trust those on a significantly modified setup. **Yeah, yeah. I know there's also the difference between factory maps being fixed to certain injector sizes and MAP/AFM/VE relationships, and the likely aftermarket ECU base maps being better able to handle the sorts of changes that would render a stock ECU dangerous, like different sized injectors. But let's just ignore that for the moment, because the principle is still the same.
