Hi Guys,

I'm currently planning a fuel system upgrade to my BNR34 and want to keep things looking stock so i'm putting a Walbro 460 in tank. Holley have finally released their Hydromat products in sizes other than the nascar ones, and I need some help on the positioning of the OEM sock in the fuel tank so I know which one to get. I'm away from my car at the moment and can't pull it apart to check, so if anyone can help i'd really appreciate it.

what does the fuel sock positioning in the tank look like, green, red or other, and which of the hydramat products would suit better?

Option 1: 38x20cm cross

Option 2: 38x20cm cross

there are others here: https://www.holley.com/products/fuel_systems/hydramat/

EDIT: i found this image that would suggest Option 1 is the better one:

and here's a video to see what i'm on about if you haven't seen them in action.

hmm, true. also saw the 11" square. that would cover the entire base of the tank, and I could just run a longer fuel hose to it so it sits in the correct centered location, with a metal rod as an extension from the end of the stock bracket holding the central fitting in the right place. that may be a better option.

also, does anyone know if the walbro 460 primes itself OK if it is placed in the stock location? or does it need to be located right at the bottom of the tank?

Only the pierburg pumps like to prime like that, not sure how the Walbro will go. A large external will do the job nicely it seems...

I wonder if the magic part is ethanol tolerant?

Incredibly, I've made zero progress on this.. my car has been at a workshop for months and months having the engine built for track work/quaife front.

I have a bunch of stuff that i need to do once I get it back, but this is still on the list. I'll get some photos of inside my empty tank and work out how to progress with this.

I have a few things to test, namely the flow performance of the oem jet pump at various rail return rates, I have a high flow Sard jet pump that I can swap in if it works better. The pumping over from the other saddle straight onto the hydramat will increase its effectiveness greatly.

If its inadequate I may look into a lift pump actively pumping from the other saddle onto the hydramat.

I'm running a R33 GTR circuit car. It's on Slicks, E85, 800hp. All the good stuff. Sequential Holinger etc.

I have Frenchies earlier dual pump hanger - It seats two Walbro 460lph pumps on the bottom of the tank next to each other.

I've run that tank as low as a quarter while racing and have not had any issues with fuel pickup at all. Radium rail and end mount reg.

Always logging the fuel pressure.

Hydramat might be good, but you might be overthinking it too mate.

other option is radium do an in-tank surge setup for the R34 tank.

hides it all away and very neat. not a huge surge capacity but you can't use that much fuel around corners anyway.

    • Breather for it. If it's anything like the GTRs it should run up to the top of a bellhousing bolt.
    • What basics? With these OBD1 ECUs it's not like the ECU will give you any real clues, it's not really doing any sanity checking of sensors/sensor data. My experience is actually a lot of sensors tend to be the source of the issue first and foremost, and checking everything gives you a direction to investigate. MAF/O2/STFT/LTFT should all kind of make sense. You can try little tricks of the trade like tapping the MAFs to see if it triggers a stumble, things like that. But once you've done a compression test knowing whether you have an air leak or fuel delivery problem is kind of hard to narrow down without sensor data. And you don't really know if all your sensors are making sense unless you can interrogate the ECU directly about what it's seeing for sensor data.
    • Absolutely this. Yes, except not vacuum hose. Something oil/fuel safe is a better idea.
    • Like a Stagea, but not as cool! Hope you have enough garage space for this, or is something going to leave to make way for it?
    • The new project has arrived. I have wanted one of these for such a long time, well before that meathead Clarkson drove one in Africa. I really wanted an E34 but I have some medical issues that mean I *really* can't bump my head and the lack of airbags in the E34 made it just too big of a risk.  I don't know why I've always liked these older touring BMW's to be honest, but man I love this car. She's been pretty well maintained for her 243k's with what appears to be only a single oil leak at the oil filter housing gasket. It has a bunch of updates including later model bumper and headlights, 7 series billion-way adjustable seats and it came with a few spares and another set of wheels with legal tyres. I got a unregistered car permit from the RTA and drove it back from Canberra on Saturday.                   First cab off the rank is cleaning it up for blue slip. I dont know how picky they'll be but I figured I'd clean the headlights, fix the oil filter housing gasket, replace the speed sensors (throwing errors) and swap the OE wheels (the M Sport wheels have a big chunk out of one of the tyres.) I also need to replace all 6 gas struts - 2 for bonnet, 2 for hatch and 2 for hatch glass. The car tries to eat me whenever i open any of these. My plan for this car; Ultimately, this is a budget car. I can't afford to throw lots at it and its because I have another car that I got this, if something breaks its no big deal. I will just maintain and repair it really. But eventually I want to do a manual conversion. It actually looks pretty straight forward for E39's and the trickiest part will be sourcing the parts.  I do need to replace some suspension arms or bushes because wow, she's a floaty old girl. She's also fantastically slow. Like really, really slow. When pulling back out on to the freeway on Sat after a quick pull over I needed to wait until no cars were visible before going.  Oh, and the guy I bought it from had a gorgeous R31 GTS-X in the garage.
