So red has always been my fav color and I always wanted a red V35, but there are hardly any on the market. My previous 250GT was written off by a jerk teenager rear-ending me, so I got this 03 from a mate with a ridiculous low price (and it has many faults so I spent some cash fixing it up too). When I thought of doing a red roof, my missus was like "why don't you just go with the whole car?!" then I was like hell yeah why not!

We have no garages so I can only do it on the drive way... 1-2 hours a day after work and dinner.

Doors. Almost there!

Different color scales coz I ran out of vinyls and was being a cheapass...

All work by myself... PMs are welcome if you would like to know more about details/techniques. Plenty of videos on youtube but it does feel different when you are on it yourself.

All vinyls from Avery Denison, got them from a very good supplier in North Rocks - pm for details (or I can post it here if this does not go against forum rules), $55 per meter (1.5m wide).

So I spent less than $800 for the whole car (and I wasted quite some in the beginning), compared to those vinyl shops this is a massive saving (and feels heaps more accomplished)!

Excellent effort and workmanship... however you had a beautiful pearlescent white to begin with and in my opinion should have kept that... or if you wanted vinyl wrap - chosen with matte \ gloss black (a bit boring, I know).

If it were me and I was sticking with the red, I would go all red (no black lines or other colored red lines) and beware of changing the background colour on the number plate (I don't know about NSW, but in SA that is illegal and you would get done for that immediately).

Lol I have so many queries on the plate everywhere...

In NSW you can arrange those plates with RMS (travel authority), this design is called flaming rose and cost a one-off $295 with $99 annual fees I think.

Many panels on my car had been resprayed (paintwise, the car was pretty shit when I got it) so I just got sick of looking at the imperfections everyday, and I never liked matte finish.

Thanks for clearing all of that up :)

Your decision makes sense

Nice, I actually saw your car in North Sydney parked opposite to the hotel, I just live on the street after that.

Got a question, is it legal to have a different color to the base coat in NSW?

Lets say you have an accident and due to the car is different to original, will the insurance cover?

I was thinking to wrap my car in ultimate black opal (GTR Spec V)

Thanks

Lol mate, yeah I work in North Sydney, so need to shuffle the car every 2 hours or so.

Changing the color - be it base or wrapping - is legal as long as your color does not pose a threat or offence to anyone else on the street, in NSW.

You can notify RMS using this form:

http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/about/forms/45070212-adjustment-of-records.pdf

and it's free.

Insurance wise I'm on Just Car third party and they never even asked about the color - so can't say much about it. Comprehensive should be no issue if you update all details with them, but premium may vary (and you need to check this out with your insurer).

Never. Ever. Only Have Third Party on an Import. Comprehensive (double rainbow) all the way man!

Nice job with the wrapping. Looks sweet.

As for the insurance comment. I don't see the problem. Insurance is a about managing risk. As mentioned op got the car cheap, so its not worth paying the rip off that is comprehensive insurance to him. How often do you crash ? :)

Awesome work!…Although I do have a question….In person is it really glossy like paint? Don't know if its the pics but its coming off as if a paint job with really bad orange peel?

Haven't got the time to wax it properly yet, but imo the finish looks similar to paint but not as 100% glossy (if you compare it to those premium metallic high gloss paint). The "peel" you mentioned is probably due to poor light/camera or water/dust marks on the car...

Also the color code from Avery is SWF "Red" - but under the sun it has an orange-ish finish (which works even better for me coz I like orange too).

I hate my iphone 5 camera.

    • All I can say Duncan is good luck and I hope that Neil did not run any E85 in Cheryl. I have recently experienced the full spectrum of fuel tank issues in my R33's that had been caused by E85 and contaminated fuel. When you take the cover off the top of the tank and have a look inside you will get an understanding of how easy it will be. Best case situation is clean fuel with minimal contamination. My GTR was like this and it was a very simple operation to just grab the fuel pump carrier bracket and slide it up and out of the tank. My three GTS_T's had different levels of fuel contamination that was probably caused by E85 in the fuel.  In the worst case all of the metal components in the tank had rusted to the point where there were pieces of rusted metal swirling around in the tank. This required the removal of the exhaust, the tailshaft, the complete rear cradle and the fuel tank. The components in the tank were that rusted that it took days to get the fuel pump carrier and the mounting brackets out of the tank. When the tank was finally cleaned, everything inside the tank had to be replaced. With the tank all back together I could then reinstall it in the car along with everything else that had to come out. Good luck and I hope that you find a clean tank.
