Hi all, I have been doing some research for my upcoming suspension upgrade and have'nt found a clear answer. If SydneyKid or others with LOTSA good info could please step forward, it would be greatly appreciated!

I am looking for bump, rebound and height adjustable coilovers that aren't too stiff.

I know Whiteline is meant to be one of the prefered kits however I have been informed that the sports kit for my car won't be available until November this year. I am in dire need of new shocks becuase mine are starting to leak and bounce. I have looked at user comments on both Tein HA/HE and HKS HiperMax coilovers and both would probably be unsuitable for me due to the high spring rates they usually come with. Apart from the Tein Flex which is what I am leaning towards. I know a lot of people have reccomended Bilsteins and I would consider them also but they are quite pricy for fully adjustable ones.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Other brands (preferably with model codes) I should consider? Also, can anyone reccomend me a suspension store located in Adelaide that doesn't charge rediculous prices because they're in Adelaide.

PS: My budget is $3.5k for the coilovers, preferably less due to needing new tyres as well =(

PPS: My car has lowered springs that are quite a bit stiffer thatn standard but I have no idea what rate they are.

The end result on A032R's is around 600 lbs (13 kg/mm) in the front spring rate, although we have used up to 800 lbs (16 kg/mm). The rear spring rate is in the 450 lbs (9 kg/mm) with the 24 mm adj rear stabiliser bar to 600 lbs (12 kg/mm) with the 22 mm adj rear stabiliser bar. For Bridgestones or Dunlops we would probably end up with a bit more.

Would this bit of info still be applicable to me SK?

I have DMS coilovers in my R32 GTR and they have performed well so far. They have bump and rebound adjustment and it’s possible to select your preferred spring rate at purchase time. I had DMS in my GTiR before that and they too were particularly competent.

I am looking for bump, rebound and height adjustable coilovers that aren't too stiff.

Do you want separate bump and rebound adjustment?

Other brands I should consider?

Koni (if you want combined bump and rebound adjustment), Ohlins (they have both combined and separate), DMS (ditto), Proflex (separate bump and rebound adjustment).

Measure them up and I can work out the rate for you. I need to know the coil ID, wire diameter and exactly the number of coils.

Depends on what car you have, what you are using it for, what tyres you are running and what else you have done, suspension wise.

:)

Thanks for the input but I have settled for Koni Sports adjustables with Whiteline springs from their sports kit. Seems to be fairly good match so far with minimal roll, fairly neutral handling but on power it is slightly twitchy(could also be that I'm not driving on an optimal surface).

Ride is still a bit harsh although I am getting used to it. I think I may have to go to a softer spring rate but unsure until I get to experience something better.

SK: car is predominantly a road car, quite bumpy roads around Adelaide(One of the reasons I went for Koni's instead of Bilsteins) and I will be getting swaybars/anti-roll bar upgrades "soon" :), so how soft can I go with springs on the Koni Sports before it adversely affects handling?

BTW: I am definitely happy with the Koni Sports plus I got it for an absolute bargain! I can even factor in another 2 sets of springs and it would still be cheaper than the most expensive quote I got for them!

Hi SK,

I have a follow on query with respect to ecenshu's questions about coilovers.

I have an R32 GTR, and ultimately I want to build it up as a track / street car. It has a full dumps back exhaust, and will be getting an oil cooler ASAP.

From there I will focus on brakes / suspension, I would prefer at this stage to get the handling sorted out, rather than chase dyno numbers.

I am too looking at coilovers, and would seperate bump and rebound adjustment. I will / am running R compound tyres, such as Azenis or D01Js and will likely incorporate the Whiteline handling kit with the coilovers. Stiffness is not (too) much of a concern for me.

Looking at spring rates of around 8kg/mm and 12kg/mm rear and front respectively. Will this be overly stiff on the road?

What would you recommend at around $4K?

Thanks in advance

    • Seemed to be good when Jeff owned it but they did a shit job on my car, probably worth a think before spending 10's of thousands of dollars where they might be cutting corners
    • Starting with issues 1 - 5, we have already run into a problem...!  Issue #4 contained 2x front brake calipers, instead of 1 caliper and 1x steering knuckle. Will have to call DeAgostini on Monday to sort it out. Anyway here's some photos.  Issue #1 is the front bumper, headlights and number plate. Issue #2 is the front wheel (with "We produced with spartan air." text on the centre cap!) and tyre, the front lip spoiler and cylinder head cover with ignition coils under the centre cover... which will never be seen again. Issue #3 is the bonnet and cylinder head. Issue #4 is the front strut, brake disc (with laser etched metal discs) and brake caliper. I stopped here because of the issue with the missing steering knuckle.  Next update will be #5 - #10 in a few weeks.
    • DeAgostini is one of a few companies that release quite large (the largest commonly available size actually) 1/8 scale models in a series of weekly issues over 100 - 110 instalments.  They release different models for different markets and DeAgostini Japan have release the BNR32 Skyline GT-R Nismo last month. I've made two of these 1/8 scale sized cars (one an R35 GT-R from 2012 - 2014, the other I'm just about halfway through, a BNR34 Skyline GT-R from the 2Fast 2Furious movie) so when this R32 was announced there was no way I could ignore it as it's my favourite out of all Nissans.  Each issue costs around $20 so it costs about $2.2K when completed. I suppose it is very expensive for what it is, but the quality and details are really very good, and there are many "gimmicks" like fully functioning exterior and interior lights operated with a remote control, working steering, all doors/bonnet/boot/fuel lid open and close, the side mirrors fold in and it even has a speaker for the engine revving sounds when you turn the lights on.  Each issue comes with a magazine that tells the story of the BNR32 Skyline GT-R Nismo from the first design stages of the BNR32 to Group A homologation and the various racing version that were run in the Japanese Group A and JGTC, and Australian Group A.  So I plan to update the build in this thread 5 issues at a time.  https://deagostini.jp/r32/?srsltid=AfmBOooKjxDc4EUK2rmXqMBPgyHfFJ24s4oEPJBNpnF-lFlsRoW0PE6P
