So thought i would share my baby R32 HCR project and see what peoples opinions are on a few things!!!

Building the car for a race class were we go out and buy a $2000 car. cage it.. and race it.

Engine had a whole about the size of my foot in the block after i got a bit happy on a intersection on country ways.

Gearbox was shoot.

Rust everywhere! Pre common for a down south car /sadface.

Hicas light never turns off.

Rear diff blowen.

Seats were trashed.

interior half missing.

Wiring all trashed and cut.

Exterior not the best but ready for some dents on the track!

And just to add she has to be fully road legal as well as race legal =]

So far the new RB20DE engine is being rebuilt.

New Front rotor's/pads/braided lines going in.

Rebuilt box. 5SPD manual.

Stage 2 racing clutch.

Solid engine mounts.

Factory radiator.

6 Point racing harness's

Fixed Bucket seats.

and a 6 point roll cage.

all getting ready to go in as soon as my engineer fixes the 20 odd rust holes everywhere.

So have a look @ us on facebook here! Drop us a like!

As she sits ready to get shipped over to the engineers.

I do really feel for him with the amount of rust i'v found recently after stripping the sound deadening.

Dead serious.

yeah ok now im even sounding crazy.

Sole reason for build is to enter 2K Cup.

Witch means no turbo.

2000CC engine limit.

But that wont stop me from taking that engine out in 12 months time throwing in a 25DET and using for a different race class.

ahhh...

there's a thread kicking around about a rally based r32with a tuned rb20de with itb's some years ago.... worth a look for you id say.

id be tempted to just try and find another rb20de, put the cost of a rebuild into brakes and light weight panels/weight reduction.

rb20de neo is an option if you can find one.

Cheers for the input! and yeah finding a half way decent RB20DE in the south island is very hard..

They have all been +T'd and thrashed to the days.

On another note 2K cup is based on all factory cars....

No aftermarket mods.

All factory panels.

No weight reductions.

The whole idea is to get people into racing without paying huge for a decent race car.

Was a local idea from a few mechanics to get the boy racers of the streets!

And neo is a no go.

HP limit is 160..Factory RB20DE is 150/155 off memory?

at least skim the head a few times... you know, just to make sure it's straight... oh and if the exhaust manifold is a bit crooked, just make sure the port and flange match... you know, just so it's all correct :-)

and just in case your diff needs work, viscous lsd's are cheap for 32's.... and if you find the crown wheel and pinion are no good, then if there happens to be an 4.636 - C23 Serena SR20DE 4WD Manual, C23 CD20T 4WD (4.636:1)in a wrecking yard, then that might be good for replacement parts???

:-)

really? haha i was going to try find a R32 viscous non ABS GTR diff for her haha as that was a optional extra on my model.

I have to stay under 160HP (HP Limit for my class.)

And the RB20DE was 150-155 stock.... Would skimming add much ? or is it piss all increase?

Cheers for the advice tho!!!!!

adding a gts-t lsd (gtr diff is clutch/plate.. more expensive) and dropping ratio's will allow you to use 160hp more effectively. Just think light weight, more grip, better brakes (Id be finding some gts-t callipers and rotors).

160hp at the wheels or at the engine?

either way, id get more compression in the thing, port match the intake and exhaust and pick up an safc cheap for a bit of a tune.

best single mod is to get the best tyres you can afford.

Keen to see how your first race pans out.

Cheers

J.

Tires are semi slicks.

Surprisingly haha some one pulled some strings and were alloud to use them on the road well...

Light weight advanti rims. (not sure on sizes as of yet)

Brakes i have been quoted stock setup with racing rotors and pads.

Clutch is a aftermarket 6PUK.

She wont be getting driven on the road much so who cares lol.

and suspention atm is king springs lowered slightly.

150-155HP @ engine stock.

the 160HP limit is at the wheels.

Thanks! will definatly post up when i have finished a race xD

  • 4 months later...

So i haven't updated this in a while and I'm not sure why not.....

Well.......

i got bored and lazy....

So found a RB20DE that was imported into nz with only 90,000KM on it so got that in there now. Sadly it keeps popping CAS =[

All the enginearing for the body has now been finished, Including parcel shelf because last owner was a tool.

Engine mounts all got made and throwen in.

and the spoiler!!!!! (need some paint)

Bucket Seat

6 Point Harness

All new rotors and pads right round.

oh and i found some Lenso rims behind my garage <3

Any ways some photos of my progress.

And then a week or so ago i was running out of interior parts so i picked this up... surprisingly for 150bux....

All interior was there except seats and all drive train beside manual box.... Factory 20E manual =]

    • I swear at my GKTech ones every time I have to take them apart and replace a spherical. But I wouldn't swap them for anything else. They absolutely slay every other option, at least in terms of how they actually work. You sure you don't want to live with bearings? I mean, they don't have "ball bearings". They are rod ends and sphericals throughout. Tough as nuts, even though I have found more than one way to wear them out.
    • From when I was looking at getting the 86 engineered for the turbo, the joint said to put in a few euro 5 or 6 cats, then tune the car on a nice clean E85 tune When I was looking at a turbo for the MX5, it was basically the same thing, a couple of cats and a nice clean tune Although, it will depend on the year of the Jeep IRT emmisions standards required, and what mods are done, especially if it has a newer engine installed that requires a higher Euro
    • Yeah - but it's not actually that easy. There are limits for HC, CO, NOx and particulates. Particulates shouldn't be a concern in any petrol engine unless trying to comply to the very latest Euro standard. But getting a tune right so that all the others stay within limits AT THE SAME TIME is not a trivial exercise. You couldn't possibly get it right by just guessing at the tuner's dyno, unless he had a 4 gas analyser up the pipe, which is not often the case these days. It used to be. Every decent shop that did "tune ups" (as opposed to tuning) would have a 4 gas analsyer. Perhaps there's still quite a few of them around these days. But most "tuners" are only watching O2 and power readings.
    • Slight segway but the most expensive part of the whole thing which I would have thought would only be required for an engine size/type swap, not a VIV test, is emissions testing.  That's when you get into the big bucks.  I can't remember the exact price now but I got quotes for the GT-R based on swapping to RB30 (not that anyone bothers doing it legally anymore...) and it was around $4500 just for that alone.  The guy that does them manipulates the tune on the vehicle to make sure it passes.  The cheaper option is to book into Kangan Batman Tafe (I think that's where it was) and hire their tester.  Allegedly you're not allowed in there with the car though so not in a position to tweak anything to make sure the vehicle passes.  I'm sure in this day and age of ultra tuneable ECU's you could get the tuner to program a special efficiency (clean) tune that emits the lowest amount of particulates possible that would pass the test.  It might only make 50kW's but as long as it passed who cares!
    • I'm sure he has left signs, or, he is looking down, laughing That's my cunning plan for when I leave, lots of half finished projects, with no rhyme or reason of where I was actually up to, just to keep everyone on their toes
