From my understanding, waxes (usually carnauba based) can be expected to last 2-4 weeks on average, before needing to be reapplied. They offer a deep shine and lustre.

Sealants on the other hand can last much longer, are synthetic compounds, and don't offer as much shine, but don't have to be applied as often.

My car is kept under a UV protecting shade, but rain water still gets through, meaning the car gets dirty pretty often, so washing is necessary every 1-2 weeks. I also get hard-water etching the clear coat which I'd like to stop from happening.

Wax seems to only last 2 weeks for me before it loses its water-beading properties, and it's a drainer to apply it all the time (takes 2hrs at least). Can anyone give me some advice on sealants which won't break the bank, and offer good long-lasting protection. If it's an OTC product that would be a bonus.

I'm currently using NU Polish as it's cheap and gives a great shine, Protech paint sealant reacts well with the polish and it can last for 6-12 months while using a wash and wax once a week. Protech paint sealant is the same stuff sold on new model cars as the 'lifetime paint guarantee'

You'll need to work the polish into the paint. The sealant doesn't need to be rubbed in, just use it sparingly and make sure you have an even coat and once it's hazed just wipe off.

Nu Finish is junk, simple as that.

If you want something that lasts a good amount of time, Duragloss Bonding Agent and then Duragloss Wet Look Sealant over the top is regarded as one of the longest lasting sealant combos available. I do this combination on a lot of clients vehicles since being in NQ I need to give customers something that will last in our extreme climate.

Collinite is a good product but is still a hybrid wax (mixture of sealant and carnauba) so won't last as long as a true synthetic polymer.

Other options would be looking into coatings like Nanolex, Gyeon, Dodo Juice Supernatural Infinity Coating etc.

Also comes down to what you want to spend :)

small piece of advice about collinite - apply it very thinly, don't cake it on. otherwise the haze/excess is pretty difficult to remove. slightly moist foam applicator may also help

this is one of my efforts, just wash, clay and collinite

Zaino z-cs Clear Seal

Trust me you won't be sorry.

Do all the usual, and then apply this as your sealant.

Super dureable, and stunning wet look finish for months.

Wouldn't use anything else and have used it on all colours from white to black.

For the outcome and ease of use, don't think there's much better.

Yep, thats it.

I'm no pro detailer but absolutely love that stuff.

Especially because its so easy to put on and you get great results that last.

I did a lot of work to clean and prep the paint on my V35 Coupe that i had, and the results lasted well over 6 months and it was a daily driver.

I actually haven't bought it from here in Aus.

Back when i was looking for it, i actually got a user on G35Driver forums in the US to buy me a heap of stuff and she sent it over as Zaino would not ship to Australia.

I think there's a few distributors here now though.

Just do a Google search for it in Aus

Let us know if you find some as I'm due for more :)

    • You're making my point for me. 95 is not "premium". It is a "slightly higher octane" version of the basic 91 product. The premium product that they want people to buy (for all the venal corporate reasons of making more profit, and all the possibly specious reasons of it being a "better" fuel with nicer additive packages) is the 98 octane stuff. 95 is the classic middle child. No-one wants it. No-one cares about it. It is just there, occupying a space in the product hierarchy.
    • 98 and 95 have to meet the same national fuel standards beside the actual RON.  91 has lower standards (which are quite poor really), so 95 is certainly not 91 with some octane booster. It would be an easier argument to claim 98 is just 95 with some octane boosters. Also RON doesn't specify 'quality' in any sense, only the octane number.  Anything different retailers decide or not decide to add to their 95 or 98 is arbitrary and not defined by the RON figure.
    • Anyone know alternatives to powerplus tungsten? Can't find an alternative online.
    • 95 is just a scam outright. 98 is the real "premium" with all the best detergents and other additive packages, and at least historically, used to be more dense also. 95 is just 91 bargain basement shit with a little extra octane rating. Of course, there's 91 and there's 91 also. I always (back in the 90s early 2000s) refused to put fuel in from supermarket related fuel chains on the basis that it was nasty half arsed shit imported from Indonesia. Nowadays, I suspect that there is little difference between the nasty half-arsed shit brought in by the "bargain" chains and the nasty half-arsed shit brought in by the big brands, given that most of it is coming from the same SEAsian refineries. Anyway - if there's still anything to that logic, then it would apply to 95 also. 98 is only made in decent refineries and, as I said, is usually the "premium" fuel, both in terms of octane rating and "use this because it's good for your engine because it's got the unicorn jizz in it!".
    • Yeah since those first 2 replies I actually went and put some 98 in it and tbf it's already doing much better than the 95 (which is weird and makes my inner tinfoil hat wearer think the 95 was a crap batch), getting 8ish around town. Again, wonder if it takes a while to stabilize if the fuel is changed a couple of times. I swear cars used to just either run "well" or "s**t* in my 20s, none of this fuel optimisation business haha
