Hey guys

I'm buying a used car 06 honda accord euro navi luxury it has 100% up to date log books 140,000ks. From a nissan dealer it comes with a free 1 yr warranty and roadside assistance, they have offered a in house dealer extended warranty for 3 yrs costs $1100 it cover anything going wrong apparently. engine,engine internals gearbox,gearbox internals, steering,drivetrain blah blah ect.

I've never brought from a dealer so not sure if it is worth it but it sounds good, if they are going to cover a 9yr old car for the next 3 yrs mechanically that can only be good?

But in saying that my R33 has not had any problems in the 4-5 yrs I've owned it

Would you guys opt for the extended warranty or are they all bull and I will be left high and dry in the event something breaks

Anyone recently gone through something like this tell me your thoughts or any other thoughts

yes and they also force your car to be serviced at one of their dealerships as a condition for warranty.

my current work vehicle is 2nd hand from a dealership and whilst there might be peace of mind from my employer, servicing costs are ridiculous and forced to go to a Toyota dealership for servicing. (the dealer actually lied to me and said i would have to bring it to their dealership only to not void warranty)

This is my biggest concern them worming out of paying or something. And that thread is pretty frightening

Yes this is true I'd have to enjoy their $99 + oil filter + oil service caped servicing

if its national warranty company, tell them to jam it where the sun don't shine... those asshats are completely useless. older cars will need servicing every 3 months to maintain warranty and they will usually have a wear and tear clause that will be used to handbrake most of your claims. they also have consequential damage clauses, eg if your oil pump fails and causes your engine to go bang, they will only cover the pump and you will be left to cover the rest of the bill.

dont forget the claim limits + the excess for each claim. i made the mistake of buying a car with the national warranty included (no extra cost, but now doubt it was added to the price of the car) then decided to void it and not bother will all the bullcrap paperwork

I would be very surprised if much went wrong at all with a 2006 Honda in the next 3 years if it was driven like something you owned rather than rented. The K24 is a reliable engine, the gearboxes are good, and anything like balljoint/suspension issues would just be dismissed by the waranty company as wear and tear anyway.

So ask yourself: Is it likely to cost me more than $1100 to fix unpredictable failures on this car in the next 3 years?

For the 2nd, 3rd and 4th yr, if it's full dealership warranty and the 'terms and conditions' are comprehensive, personally, I'd pay the $1,100.

Other aftermarket warranties are very suss and leave gaps for the insurer to wriggle out of.

The reasoning behind why I'd seriously consider it is because by the end of the 4th year the car would be close to 200,000Km so...

a) breakages often occur as the Kms get that high eg a/c compressor or condensor etc; even though I have great faith in Honda's quality as Matt above said.

b) you might wish to sell the car before the next 200,000Km major service and it's easier to do that with a bit of warranty still remaining

But go over the terms and conditions with a fine tooth comb and record explanations (by the dealer) to your Qs on your 'voice recorder' (which most people never use).

Yep I made sure it was not a warranty company warranty, their is a claim limit of $9500 oh and the free basic 1yr warranty has a limit of $1100

having said that i did have a three year nissan dealer cover on my s14 and the covered the vct rattle and a dead fuel pump no questions asked... so all depends on the provider

it has a list of parts covers and it lists almost every moving part in a engine along with all the gearbox,driveline,electrical,cooling and a/c components but will they just handbrake everything being a 9yr old car with wear and tear

It has full honda service record it drives very nicely. It will be purely a daily drive. But if the unpredictable happened I feel $1100 would be eaten up quickly Edited by dyl33

my mate has a 2003 Euro with 165k on the clock, last year it popped the electronic throttle controller which was about $850 with labour and now his stereo/aircon lights have stopped working which is a common issue - faulty circuit board inside the stereo itself, once again an exxy fix. Something to keep in mind

I'm not picking the car up until Friday so I do have sometime to think about it and go over the t&c's

I don't pick it up until 5pm, But I'm leaning towards No Extended Warranty because with the normal wear and tear clause and the consequential damage of any type. I can't see it being easy to make a claim being a 9yrs old car and 140,000km, and along with the inhouse servicing, Which I would need to follow for the next 3yrs I'm sure I'd end up paying twice anyway.

Is there any parts on a car that are not subject to wear and tear? I think not!?
