Autoblog is reporting that Hynundai have applied for a patent for their steering-wheel proximity mobile phone disabler.

In other words, they're taking the choice to use a phone while driving out of the hands of the driver.


The Korean automaker explains the idea in explicit detail in a recently published patent. The tech specifically "limits or disables the use of some of mobile device features which could cause distraction to the user," according to the abstract. Depending on variables like the vehicle's speed, the system determines what smartphone functions are safe to use, including texting or voice calls. Based on a plethora of permutations in the document, these restrictions could only be for the area around the driver's seat or for the whole vehicle.

What do you think? Good idea? Big Brother? Or just meddling and need to let the driver make these decisions?

Nono, they want the driver to be unable to use his/her device. So, it stops the driver from holding the phone to their ear.

Its also proximity limited so passengers will likely be unaffected.

Key should be your phone, put it in a slot and off you go.

I have like 4 old phone at home to get around that if I wished :P

But what about the cancers? Sitting there being radiated while you drive... Also how will it affect pacemakers and such?

All this would be irrelevant if Driver's actually realised that they are in control of what IS a lethal weapon, IMHO it has nothing to do with having or using a phone, but the distraction factor.
Some people cope well with information and other's not.

What pisses me off is the way Copper's can drive and talk on a Hand Held mobile yet other's aren't that is discrimination they should lead by example and use the correct Hands free for their phone and Car.

I can receive calls should it be necessary , blue tooth earwig that announces who it is and asks if I answer or deny.

If I ever have to ring out this too is voice activated. but what I normally do since I am on the road a lot is find a convenient and safe spot to park and exit the Car have a stretch and phone who ever it is I need to contact.

It's funny actually as all the Bull shit about using the phone in the hand is IMHO is just that bullshit, a cradle and headset is better , but in reality Text messages and the typing there of is the thing that MUST be knobbled in cars some how.

Have an observer with you and seek out some quiet back road and try to drive and text whether it is Hand Held or in some mount or other you WILL find that your car control has just got to shit , now multiply your speed up to highway speed at 100K + now you understand what I am saying. typing a text message is the single thng most likely to distract you sufficiently that you might cover more than 80 - 100 meters without looking at the road, so simulate typing and have the observer with you take note of things around the car at that time and then ask the driver. you will be surprised at just how much you miss.
What a load of shit some will sat BUT now move from the highway to suburban streets and even passed a school at 3:00-3:30 with your observer and be prepared to be scared at the potential for pedestrian and other collisions all because you want to be a SLAVE to technology , You are the driver so DO THAT !! Drive!! and not get into some BS animated conversation on the phone where your effective ability to control the vehicle and be aware of your surroundings goes out the window.

What I find sad is this mega company toying with electronic steering-wheel gadgetry when their electric power steer is what they desperately need to fix.

Failed the "Moose Test" some time ago, guess it would fail the Kangaroo test in Aus. Other manufacturers also failed but none locked the steering so spectacularly.

Meanwhile their latest version is unreliable, unpredictable and Hyundai is still ducking customer's complaints.

$3500 cost for replacement steering assembly if you're under warranty and actually have your claim recognised.

Plus the replacement might be just as bad……...

5-year warranty………not a problem, better check the exclusions though.

I'm on call 24x7x365, and I get paged via SMS to my phone. If I ended up driving a car with this kind of system I'd have to put the phone on the passenger seat and hope it doesn't slide into the Cone of Silence. Whcih is fine until the day I forget to take it out of my pocket while driving.

It always astounds me that car manufacturers (and even legislators) prefer to play around with a host of gimmicky gadgets while the cars still have poor mechanical grip, and come from the factory with dangerously low grip tyres. I recently tried a nissan dualis, which set a new low for front end grip.

We need better driver education, have people understand the risks rather than just slamming them with fines, that only works for some people and just like drink driving people still do it after getting caught.

But i guess that costs money..

Hey Zoom, if you check that i-30 Moose test, it's not an understeer problem.

The front wheels are still pointing straight ahead. The power steer has completely called it a day and he's nowhere near strong/fast enough to turn the steering wheel whilst fighting against the electronic power unit.

You'd have to wonder how many accidents have been put down to driver error instead of this.

With the Mrs car nothing shows up in diagnostics, steering unit has its own processor which can be reset by disconnecting battery for a while, as per normal.

Too many gadgets.
