Any idea what this could be? Last time it happened it was to do with the bearings in the hub. I don't think its bearings since I cannot feel it in the steering and its only a sudden clunk on braking.

It will only do it once when going forward. If I putt he car into reverse it will do it again if I brake in reverse, then again if I go forward. I've applied some force to anything I can to check for free play but can't find anything.

Where should I begin?

Google for a quick guide in how to diagnose it.

Basically jabbing the brakes at low speed, like 20 with a friend watching the wheel will more than likely show excessive movenent.

Haha I had that same issue you. Go in reverse, move about 5kph, press the brakes, clunk, move forward tap the brakes clunk.

For me it was the trunnion/king pin bearings. That really big metal enclosed joint that connects the upper control arm to the hub assembly. Hope that helps!
