Thread revival, apologies!

I have a similar issue, strange noise that appears shortly after starting the car, fluctuates a bit with RPM... If you bring the revs up the noise sort of follows / trails behind and then settles if that makes sense?

Engine was built years ago with CAMTECH 268 Cams (9mm lift i believe) and the rest of the upgrade kit with the springs and retainers.

Can you upgrade the pulley itself, if the spring is too weak (same as on the VG30 Lumps) or is it pointing towards another issue?

Cheers!

Got them measured (better late than never)

They seem to be the "wrong way around" IE Tighter on inlet and slacker on exhaust which I believe is actually the opposite to the norm on an RB? They're not perfect but am I right in saying they're not horrendous? I can't find the specs to suit the exact camtech cams anymore so using OEM and Other aftermarket specs they don't seem bad?

Put a video on to show. Using a stethoscope the noise doesn't seem to be focused around one area.

Worth noting the car has probably done 6000miles like this and it's never ever changed nor struggled to make power etc.

I'm a bit stumped!

Those numbers aren't terrible.

Another question, do you have an aluminium plenum? You could just be hearing the solid head a bit more because of that.

I know when I went from the stock intake manifold to an aftermarket intake manifold/plenum, everything became louder.

Injectors, lifters, became more audible.

Doesn't seem like it should cause them to be too noisy. Circa 0.4 is on the wider end of the range though. You can probably target more like 0.3 on the inlets.

Yeah that's exactly my thoughts but I'm far from an expert. Video didn't upload so will get it on YouTube and share the link. Thanks mate.

Yeah as above really they're not horrible numbers are they!

And it's on a greddy inlet. Has ID1050x that are quite noisy but tbh it did this on the older injectors. Lots of noise comes from the injector rail too.

Thanks for that, it actually sounds fine to me.

What oil weight are you running and what kind of oil pressure do you see around idle RPM and a bit over it?

I'm going to vote for considering going to the effort to close the lash down to the minimum. My bro-in-law got around to checking the clearances on the 3SGE in his Caldina. Was a bit fat all over. New shims at lowest allowable lash, and the car is remarkably better to drive. It appears that the increase in both total lift and duration that you get from doing this is worth a lot more than you might expect.

I have been having evil (and expensive and time consuming) thoughts about doing it to mine, and I don't even think I have a problem. Not that I'd know, though.

Yeah most people that have heard it said it was fine but it's always had me slightly worried.

Oil pressure I can't remember off the top of my head but it has plenty, I run 10w60

You're probably right mate, best get ordering some shims!

Guessing Nissan is the best place for them?

I dunno. Maybe. There's a crowd here in Oz called Precision Shims that I'd probably look to first. Although NIssan might be surprisingly cheap enough.

Trouble with the process is you have to take all the existing shims out to measure them to know what you need to order.

    • They see me rollin' they hatin'....... Took me most of the day to make the necessary mods to the mounts to make them fit the car.  Fortunately I was able to just use the mounts that came with the rotisserie. The rear ones are really secure, the front I feel i might reinforce a bit more as it doesn't seem like enough attachment to the vehicle. I'm sure it's fine but better to be safe than (extremely...) sorry.  I drilled and tapped thread into additional M12 holes to each car mount where it attaches to the rotisserie as an extra fail-safe. Without them the side to side movement is just restricted by the allen head pinch bolts, nothing actually goes though the beam. Does now! I still need to adjust the rotisserie to get the car centred in terms of centre of gravity. If it's too high or too low relative to the rotational centre line of the car, it will be like a turtle and roll onto its back or as it currently sits, I dont think I'd be able to rotate it as it sits as it needs to lift the whole car up as it rotates. Ain't happening... I'm going to be nervous as hell the first time I go to spin it on its side...
    • Oh yes done this when the window started flopping around.  Turns out the guides that run along the rail chanel had crumbed way. Took off the door card and pulled out the window mech, then the window, which you have to pull out through the top. As said unbolt the guide rail and don't spend 30 minutes getting frustrated trying to find a way to slide it out upwards cause that don't frigging work. Drop it down and out through the door hole. All I did to repair it was slice some 10mm clear plastic tube, vertically, then screw it to the guide rail both sides. This tubing rolls inward on both sides and leaves a gap wide enough to hold the window. To finish all I did was lube the plastic tube with olive oil and Bob's your uncle . . . well if he has the operation he can be your Aunt ! !  10 bucks in plastic tube and another 5 minute job done again . . . . YEH BULLSH#T ! My love for Skylines knows no bounds !
    • So was there a solution to this problem? I’m having this issue now.
    • not expensive, just irreplaceable if you don't go sub 60 at wakie in that thing people will start talking
    • I haven't replaced that, but I have had the doors apart on the r32 a couple of times The door skin will be held on by a combination of clips and bolts, just take it slowly and make sure all the sneaky hidden bolts are out Once the skin is off you should be able to pop that piece off pretty easily, looks like there are only 2 bolts holding it on
