TURBO WON'T WASTE GT 35 R

I m having a lot of problems with my r32 GTr with the turbo up grade.

Has any body experienced this problem , i have spoken to various identities here in the west but know one really nows the answer.

Have hade a custom exhaust manifold made and have put on a Garrett Gt 35 r turbo and an external waste gate. When put on dyno

it will not waste enough, turbo spooling up. ? Will just keep going!

The guys in the workshop are knowledgeble but this is throwing them.

We have spent hours removing and modifiying the manifold . but to no avail..

We have changed waste gates , no differance. We have hade the waste gate ( external ) completely off , and it makes no differance , just keeps making boost!

i am the piont where i am getting no where fast.Cananyone give me suggestions whats wrong, could it be the nearly zero plenum area, can i buy a proven manifold to suit this turbo.

Check the sizing and direction of angle on the wastegate pipe.

I would suggest that the gate/pipe on the wastegate is of insufficient size or the air passing the pipe where it joins in is of too great a restriction, meaning the air would rather go through the turbo.

Feel free to drop it around and we may be able to put a different perspective on it that may have been missed by the shop you are dealing with.

cheers

Thanks Ken , are going to give you a call. It's a tricky one that no one seems to be able to fix .

As Kam said... it'd be more related to the method of control IMO.

What are you using to control boost?

Is the Boost controller, desirably an EBC, connected up to the right points on the Gate?

Does the gate open at all? Even if the pipe is a restricion it should still open up, if not, again, controller is what i reckon

if u have the boost controller connected the wrong way it will actually run way higher boost

we seen this with a diy job n he ended up frying a head gasket and 2 pistons

having it plugged into an external wastegate is different again, and if u get it wrong, the same problems occur

make sure u have the correct instructions for the boost controller ur using

We have had the waste gate ( external ) completely off , and it makes no differance , just keeps making boost!

That's the import bit in the whole thread, remove the wastegate completely and boost still climbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is only one answer (gtrken is spot on), the manifold pipework to the wastegate presents more of a restriction than the turbo. So the exhaust continues to go throught the turbine. On a large turbo, like a GT35R, this is very possible. A smaller turbo with more turbine restriction wouldn't have such a problem.

My suggestion would be to change the design of the wastegate pipe, most particularly where it joins the collector, and free up the airflow to the wastegate. Maybe even fit two wastegate pipes from the collector and then join them at the wastegate.

Hope that helps :D

PS, I would mind seeing some pictures of the exhaust manifold design, I have heard of this 3rd hand, but never actually seen it happen.

This car now has 2 pipes and still boosts even with the gate of the car.

We know its the manifold design but the guy that made it refuses to admit it so theres no point running around town.Replace the manifold.

We have the same turbo and gate on many cars with no problems but not with this shocker manifold so no one can fix whats there it must be changed.

If you are in WA and are buying a manifold PM me to make sure iys not one of these ones.

Thanks to all of your in put. The boost controler and waste gate side of things are not even in the picture at this stage, as Sydney kid picked up on. Sydneykidd believe it or not we have two out lets on the collector area going to the gate, and guess what, even with the gate completely off it makes no differance !!?? Steve at SST, it 's been in your workshop many times in the past few weeks and appreciate your and Anthonys help, but not once have you said the manifild is the is DEFINETLY the problem ?! I have to go to !@%^ ( manifold maker ) again . I have spent hours and hours on this , it shouldnt be this hard. If you know that it's definetly the manifold order me one and lets prove a piont.

If I had done some serious custom mods i would expect some commisioning problems, but manifold , turbo, intercooler, 264/264 cams and a Wolf 3 d v4 , why such a challenge. i was on the phone to Turbo tech yesterday and they suggested a larger ex housing, curently have GT 35 r- 40 comp-35 ex with ex housing .82 , they recommend up size to 1.06 and in turn this will allow a little more by pass over the ex wheel and stop the dramatic spool up while wasting ?( (another $540.00 ) at my expense. The current idea of the combo of turbo is to come in hard and minimise lag, dont know if turbo techs suggestion is the amswer ? What do you guys think and there must be some one out there that has seen this before that can pin piont.

All in all, be it the manifold guy saying it's the turbo and vice versa or the tuner saying it's the manifold, who's going to BLOODY solve this problem because so far it all apears very amaturish from a paying clients perspective ?

i seriously don't think u need a larger exhaust housing, they just want to make some money off you in your time of desperation.

how are you hoses connected to the wastegate, also which wastegate are u using?

have u tried to see if it opens (with a compressor) while off the car?

We supplied an ECU for this car only and lost many hours helping try sort anothers shop stuff up

. This turbo and gate set up is used by us often with great results but we use Butler built manifolds and never have problems.

Dont spend a cent on other parts when its a maniflod problem.

You already ordered a different manifold of us so how could you say we never said it was manifold.

Best you deal with Ken now.

**** I asked you about the made in China manifolds last week , you said they should be in in a couple of weeks, i said put my name on one and we will see if this sorts the problem out.

That's not proving any thing. I appreciate the time spent on the Dyno, but it hasn't been a lot of time because it simply cannot be tuned properly at this stage.Anthony i must say has been extremly helpfull. You haven't lost out , i have full intentions of paying when the cars tuned. Grant next door who provided the manifold has tried his best but it's "all getting to hard ".

****

I have spent over four days up there so far, driving 170 km each time and spending time off work as well as being hands on pulling gear off to simply show concern and to show i understand the problems .

    • Because people who want that are buying euros. The people with the money to buy the aftermarket heads and blocks aren’t interested in efficiency or making -7 power, they’re making well over 1,000hp and pretty much only drive them at full throttle  best way to way make money is know your customer base and what they want and don’t spend money making things they don’t want.
    • It's not, but it does feel like a bit of a missed opportunity regardless. For example, what if the cylinder head was redesigned to fit a GDI fuel system? It's worth like two full points of compression ratio when looking at modern GDI turbo vs PFI turbo. I'm pretty reliably surprised at how much less turbo it takes to make similar power out of a modern engine vs something like an RB26. Something with roughly the same dimensions as a -7 on an S55 is making absolutely silly power numbers compared to an RB26. I know there's a ton of power loss from things like high tension rings, high viscosity oil, clutch fan, AWD standby loss, etc but it's something like 700 whp in an F80 M3 vs 400 whp in an R33 GTR. The stock TF035HL4W turbos in an F80 M3 are really rather dinky little things and that's enough to get 400 whp at 18 psi. This just seems unwise no? I thought the general approach is if you aren't knock limited the MFB50 should be held constant through the RPM range. So more timing with RPM, but less timing with more cylinder filling. A VE-based table should accordingly inverse the VE curve of the engine.
    • I've seen tunes from big name workshops with cars making in excess of 700kW and one thing that stood out to me, is that noone is bothering with torque management. Everyone is throwing in as much timing as the motor can take for a pull. Sure that yields pretty numbers on a dyno, but it's not keeping these motors together for more than a few squirts down the straight without blowing coolant or head gaskets. If tuners, paid a bit more attention and took timing out in the mid range, managed boost a bit better, you'll probably see less motors grenading. Not to name names, or anything like that, but I've seen a tune, from a pretty wild GT-R from a big name tuner and I was but perplexed on the amount of timing jammed into it. You would have expected a quite a bit less timing at peak torque versus near the limiter, but there was literally 3 degrees of difference. Sure you want to make as much as possible throughout the RPM range, but why? At the expense of blowing motors? Anyhow I think we've gone off topic enough once again lol.
    • Because that’s not what any of them are building these heads or blocks for. It’s to hold over over 1000hp at the wheels without breaking and none of that stuff is required to make power
    • Dort sounds above 3k rpm are dorty 🤣 I might krinkle black the alloy 🤔
