Ok hi guys, so I've been reading stuff from SAU for years but just made the account and first post here :) I've got an r33 gtst s2 with the following:

Front mount

T3/t04e turbo

Sard fuel reg

Walbro 255lph fuel pump

Bosch 740/760 injectors (couldn't remember if it's 740 or 760 off the top of my head)

Spitfire coil packs

Coil over suspension

Heavy duty organic clutch

Wide band

Haltech platinum ecu

Full 3 inch exhaust

Greedy profec b boost controller ( set to 14 and 17 psi for 230/255rwkw )

Just had a major service and compression test done and all cylinders are at 150-170 psi.

Pretty sure that's the lot, maybe a few other things but that gives u guys a good idea of what I'm working with. Now I'd like to see 300rwkw but before that I want to swap my intake mani for an oem one that doesn't run across the top of the motor as I'm sick of removing piping for basic stuff like changing plugs etc so was just curious if I'll need a retune straight away? And if a few people could suggest ways of moving forward to a reliable 300rwkw I'd appreciate it :)

Most certainly a retune, you're altering the air supply which means altering the fuel.

However you would benefit FAR more from spending the money on a decent turbo on than changing inlet manifold. You'd live with an extra 10mins to do plugs if you could pick up both power and response every time you drive it.

You've spent decent money on things like a Haltech ETU, Wideband yet you've got a turbo from the 1970s on there, does the setup zero justice IMO.

And realistically based on your power vs boost figures, at a very broad guess, the turbo would seem to be running out of puff anyway meaning 300rwkw is going to be almost an impossible stretch. It *might* be doable with E85 but not if you're outta turbo flow, which seems to be the case.

Well my problem now is funds, it wasn't so when I did most of these mods and for the life of me can't get a consistent answer for what a good turbo replacement ? Obviously I'd love to be running a garret gtx3582r but it's a bit pricey :/ nismoid could u list me some different options of what u would replace it with? Based on price/performance etc?

A turbo is the MOST important part, bar none. Cheap out there, the rest of the set up will never be as good as someone with a better turbo for the power/area etc.

If you've read the forums as much as you have said, you'd know the GT3076 in a .82 rear would be the most popular pick for 300rwkw.

Read the dyno thread, pages of GT3076 results to look at.

Or consider something more on a budget from Hypergear. Again, they have a long detailed thread, you've just gotta decide for yourself.

I get that the gt3076 with the .82 rear housing is the most common but if I don't mention any bias opinions of turbos I might have someone like yourself looking at my setup might tell me a better option, thanks

If you leave the valley cover off you can change plugs without removing the crossover pipe. it's a bit more fiddly and you need a wobbly socket (uni joint) but it can be done.

actually on my R33 I sliced the rear part off so the valley cover was completely flat (rather than bending down at the back of the motor). then you can get it in and out without touching the crossover pipe as well.

but really it should only take a couple of minutes to pull the crossover pipe. front facing plenums have issues with uneven flow distribution - unless you buy an expensive one that has been flowbenched and proves even air distribution to each cylinder. that's a lot of money to spend to avoid a small inconvenience, but each to their own.

See that's the first I've heard of uneven flow distribution with the oem manifolds so maybe I haven't done as much research as I should've, thanks for that kinks and it's not so much that it's an effort or time consuming to take off cross over pipe it's just that its a pain in the ass doing it everytime and it looks so much cleaner having the forward facing plenum

And nismoid I was previously looking at an ATR43SS1PU hyper gear turbo with .86mm rear housing with the rb25 Bolton assembly. as much as I want a certain power figure I want it to be achieved without too much lag so do u think I'd be happy with that turbo?

My 2c? First I have to ask what it is exactly that you mean by "oem plenum"? Do you realise that OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer? It doesn't mean "aftermarket", or "forward facing" or whatever else it seems you think it means.

The extra bonus 1c is about it being a pain in the arse to do it every time. Wow. That's like, I dunno. A couple of times a year. I would go crazy under those circumstances.

The extra extra bonus 0.2c is to point out that appearances under the bonnet are clearly more important than functionality and you should remember that and stick to it at all costs. Don't let anyone tell you different.

No....a forward facing plenum is an an intake manifold with the throttle body "facing forward" in visual terms, and in regards to the oem I was under the impression that Nissan had made some of these intake manifolds with the "ffp" or "forward facing plenum" design because so many people didn't like the look of and functionality of having the crossover pipe from the standard manifold...appreciate the comment though..

id advise looking through peoples build threads and the turbo and power thread http://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/55845-rb25-turbo-upgrade-all-dyno-results/page-1you'll soon see what's reliable and what turbo makes what power with other modifications. May seem like a bit of work, but that's half the fun and it will broaden your ideas and open new possibilities.

Changing plugs isn't that much of an inconvenience with the standard plenum and J pipe. Should only take a few minutes, like 5-10 tops.

FFP do look nice if they are rippled like standard, i have never used one or seen a back to back test vs standard so i can't comment on their 'power'.

Take a good look at the engine bay and you'll soon realise that the wiring loom, vac hoses, and power steering reservoir etc are the things that 'clutter' the engine bay. Personally, i'd start with a wire tuck and moving reservoirs if you're into cleaning it up a bit. It will be cheaper and keep you 'tinkering' for longer. Ever seen a 25 wire tucked and cleaned? looks a shitload better than a cluttered bay with a ftp.

The OEM plenum is, as has been pointed out, the one that came with the car. No Nissan didn't make a FFP for you . The one on the GTR is a whole other ball game with the individual throttle bodies. Your best bet is to contact Hypergear, tell him what you want and buy what he suggests. Better still have a read through the Hypergear thread first. And when you have saved the money for the turbo save up enough money for a first class tune or else all your other money is wasted.

Takes me about 10 minutes tops to do a plug change on my RB25. I have standard side facing plenum. I don't run a valley cover.

Your setup should get you what you want with a new turbo. Either a Garrett 3076 if you got the cash or I believe a Hypergear ATR43SS2 will get you there for a hefty dollar saving.

If you want spend 1k on a mod that will make you go backwards in performance go for it lol all youll gain is a nice engine bay photo and save 2min on undoing couple of hose clamps on the cross over once a year when u do plugs and at the same time youll make the oil filter harder to get to which is the more common change unless your running a relo filter.

    • Yeah, the latter. No diff should have a centre replaced without checking clearances because its unlikely to be the same as whatever came out. Not that that stops most people just checking a new centre in
    • Major thread necro but how bad of a job is it to DIY? Looking at it online it looks like if you reuse your ring and pinion as long as those are in good condition it should be fine to just pull the axles/front cover and replace the diff that way? Or should I be replacing everything and doing preload measurements/gear mesh testing like the factory service manual mentions for the rear diff?
    • in my list I had the R33 GTR as the best Skyline. Infact I had all GTR's (33>34=32), the NSX, the GTO, the 300ZX, the 180SX, the S15 better than the FD RX7. I had the MR2 and the A80 as 'just' better. I also think the DC5R Integra looks better but this is an 01 onwards car. I also think the FC>FD. It's almost like aesthetics are individual! The elements @GTSBoy likes about the FD and dislikes about the 180 are inverse in my eyes. I hate the rear end of the FD and it's weird tail lights that are bulbous and remind me of early hyundai excels. They are not striking, nor iconic, nor retro cool. The GTO has supercar proportions. I maintain these look much better in person (like the NSX) especially with nice wheels and suspension which is mandatory for all cars pretty much. Some (or all) of these you have to see in person to appreciate. You can't write a car off until you see one in the flesh IMO. Like most people we probably just like/dislike cars which represent certain eras of design or design styles in general. I also think the 60's Jag E type looks HORRIBLE, literally disgusting, and the 2000GT is nothing to write home about. FWIW I don't think the Dodge Viper Gen1's have aged very well either. You can probably see where I rate bubbly coupes like the FD. I know we're straying now but the C4 and C5 absolutely murder the Viper in the looks department as time goes on, for my eyes. Wouldn't surprise me if people who love the FD, also love the MX5, Dodge Viper, Jag E Type, etc etc.
    • I used to hate R31s, and any of the other Nissans that led up to it, and any of the Toyotas with similar styling, because of the boxiness. They were, and remain, childish, simplistic, and generally awful. I appreciate R31s a lot more now, but only the JDM 2 door. The ADM 4 door (and any other 4 door, even if they are unique compared to our local one) can eat a bowl of dicks. The Aussie R31 is also forever tarnished by their association with stereotypical bong clutching Aussie R31 owners of the 90s and early 2000s. I think the Nissans of the 70s (other than 120Y/180B/200B) are far superior looking to the 80s cars. The 240K era Skylines are boss. The same is broadly true of Toyotas. Hondas don't ever register in my thinking, from any era. Mitsus are all horrid shitboxen in any era, and so also don't register. Subarus are always awful, ditto. Daihatsus and Suzukis also don't generally register. They are all invisible. I think the SW20 MR2 looks fiddly. The 3000GT/GTO is like that but way worse. Too many silly plastic barnacles and fiddly gimmicks ruined what could have been a really nice base shape. Kinda-sorta looks like a big heavy ST165 Celica coupe (and I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing). I think the 180SX is dreadfully bland. It's not bad looking. But it has no excitement to it at all. It's just a liftback coupe thing with no interest in its lines, and bad graphical elements (ie wide expanses of taillight plastic on the rear garnish). The S13 Silvia is a little better - getting closer to R32 shapes. But still....bland. S14? Nope. Don't love it. S15...a little better. Probably a lot better, actually. Benefits from not being like a shrunk in the wash R34 (where the S13 was a shrunk in the wash R32 and the S14 looked like a Pulsar or something else from the stable on Nissan mid 90s horrors). The Z32 was hot as f**k when it came out but hasn't aged as well as the A80. Keep in mind that I think the R33 is the most disgusting looking thing - and out of all the previous cars mentioned is objectively closest to my precious R32. It's just....real bad, almost everywhere you look. And that is down to the majority of what was designed in the 90s being shit. All Nissans from that era look like shit. Most other brands ditto. In that context, the FD absolutely stands out as being by far the best looking car, for reasons already discussed. Going behind the aesthetics, the suspension alone makes it better than almost any other car.
