Can't seem to find any useful info on the topic...

Is it feasible to put a mechanical diff from an r33 gtr into a r33 gts-t?

The few aftermarket diff-equipped cars I've been in clunk and rattle quite a bit during regular daily usage (Kaaz, Cusco).

I imagine Nissan engineered the rear mechanical clutch-pack LSD of the GT-R to be practical for daily use (read not clunky) but also offer proper LSD action unlike the old viscous units of a Gts-t. The car is driven on the road 90% of the time so clunks and rattles aren't really acceptable.

Can i just throw one in or is it an ordeal? What's required?

I put an R32GTR diff (esentially the same as the R33GTR) into my Stagea. It works fine and makes no strange noises. I wanted the GTR axles as well (for strength) so put the whole shebang in - brakes and all. If you want to just put the centre in I am sure it has been done many times but note the 6 x 1 bolts on the GTR and also check where the speed sensors are (don't know where they are on a GTST).

When you search try using Google e.g. "r33 gtr diff into gtst"

Any R200 centre (as long as we're talking shortnose, or longnose, but not both at the same time) can pretty much go into any R200 housing. So, yes, you can put a GTR centre into a GTST housing.

But you DO need the larger diameter 6 bolt stub axles (and hence the driveshafts to go with them).

If you instead grab a whole GTR diff (housing and all) then you have a diff with a CV joint input flange instead of the GTST's uni-joint flange. So it doesn't matter which way you go about it, it is not a simple swap. You have to do other things at the same time.

I've done a r32 gtr diff in my 33 gtst so it can be done

Yes we did do this and it worked fine. Iirc we had to use everything from the r32 gtr. The shafts and the rear bearing hubs will need to be used. The input shaft for the diff will need to be removed and insall the original gtst one. It fits right one there. Just a matter of taking the bolt off and using a puller to pull it off and swap them around. We had all the shaft and everything. But i do believe that you can use the gtst shafts if you were to exchange the drive shaft cups and insert the gtst ones. Im just not sure if the splines are the same.

Rickpr33 should have photos of the swap. Post them up mate.

28v29 spline iirc.

After playing with nissans for 5-6 years doing countless engine swaps and conventions and putting shit where it was never designed to go. I can easily say my least favourite job is mixing and matching diff parts between R200's.

From a quick look everything seems to go back together but there is always little stuff that f**ks it and it never works.

IE, some cars (you never really know what has what) have different size bolts for the crown wheel, some have different splined half shafts, some have longer and shorter half shafts etc. there is so many variables that you have to get correct for it to work.

Mixing and matching parts between R200's I would rate 1/10. Would rather punch myself repeatedly in the dick than do it again.

Just buy a Nismo GT LSD, has adjustable torque settings... for daily use, set it on the lowest setting, for skids, baking, track work increase the torque setting.. It's a piece of piss, just unbolt the RHS drive shaft and stick a socket on the RHS stub and adjust.

OR.. just buy a KAAZ diff and run heaps of Limslip addictive.. mine doesn't even hop when I do a normal speed u-turn.

What are these "cups" that are being talked about? If they are the sub axles that get inserted into the diff centre, then the splines are NOT the same between GTSt and GTR (The GTR are bigger with a different spline count) and it won't work.

Sub axles is tge right name. Thanks GTSBoy. So if its different then yiu will need the axles and bearing hubs. Then its a done deal. We had a whole old rotten r32 gtr to pick parts from so i guess thats the easy way out.

Parts needed.

R32 gtr diff

R32 gtr axles

R32 gtr rear wheel bearing

Thats it then it should all bolt right up.

I dont agree. I would say your just cursed. Lol:D:D:D:lol::lol:

The Nismo diff is amazing, especially the ability to adjust how aggressive it is :D

However I don't mind the 2-way KAAZ I'm running now, just run extra friction modifiers and it is quite streetable

Well for us, There is parts just here rusting away, The mechanical lsd like in the r32 gtr why not use it if you have it. For that matter use what we can from the whole r32 gtr.

I do like the sound of a nismo LSD. >_>

  • 4 months later...

I am wanting to do this conversion aswell, i already have a new kaaz 2 way center to put in my gtst housing but i have concerns with the half and drive shafts holding up as i have just started drag racing.

I have a few questions regarding everything.

Do all 6x1 mech lsd gtr diffs have the same diameter half and drive shafts?

Can i replace the wheel bearing to suit the larger diameter drive shaft or does the whole hub have to go? re different spline on the outer.

I was hoping to purchase a new kaaz center to suit the gtr spline and install it in my r200 gtst housing with gtr half shafts. If this will work is there anything other than the follwoing that i need?

Kaaz diff center

6x1 gtr Half shafts

6x1 gtr drive shafts

gtr wheel bearings or hubs if outer drive shaft spline is different to gtst.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Im not sure if the half shafts are the same. They may be bigger that the gtst set. Unless your going to get a gtr kaaz center. Dont really know.how that will go. The original up rights on your gtst will bolt right up to a gtr hub/wheel bearing. Just make sure to get rigjt and left side. (Little tabs to hold e brake shoes) hense left and right needs to be right way on.

We had a complete gtr diff and bolts right up just change the pinion gear drive hub.

    • This is a story of my life things, I learned eventually (thanks to someone calling me out) that my enthusiasm for discussing and sharing ideas that it came across as arrogance and I'm like... WTF?!    One thing I'm pretty sure I justifiably pride myself on is knowing that everyone will have things they can teach you, and you're always going to find out that something you think you know turns out wrong - you just don't know what it is until you get there.   Just the bursting enthusiasm that comes with ADHD when you hit something that gives you dopamine dumps can come across like you think everyone else is wrong or don't matter. But yeah, I'm a software engineer by trade and also do tuning in weekends and 100% have long had a reputation for  quickly making connections when resolving problems or forming solutions that I've sometimes had to take people form a long walk from start to end to explain how I ended up where I did when it's seemed "too simple" when I've stated my initial case, and had the "WTF" type reaction when they've realised how much was actually considered haha.   My reward is that I get all the curly problems thrown at me.
    • Wives never seem to find things funny. Especially when they're trying to sleep, and you've found the new funniest thing ever. I've never seen someone be able to get try and be cranky with me, while they're holding back fits of laughter... 😛   Also, I tell mine it's payback anyway. She has BiPolar. So the household can get quite emotionally wild at times 😛
    • I'm not up to date on the latest, but for basic modifications like pod filter, lower springs etc you can get a modification permit at the time of inspection.  For more serious modifications you will need engineering.  Intercoolers used to fall into the mod permit rule but its been a long while since i looked it up.   Either way you will be able to get it registered, just a case of $300 vs $3k .
    • Hi everyone! I’m the new owner of a 1996 R33 GTS-T, I’ve purchased this car over from Queensland and brought it to Western Australia and I’ve found that there is a hole cut out in the engine bay for the FMIC that enters into the wheel well (fender liners are in the boot). For anyone that has had to get their car over the PITS here, will this be a major issue?
    • Yeah I've spotted this one too, whenever it's lotto superdraw week and I'm browsing car sales dot com for my new ride They must be dreaming, maybe it's worth 150k for the link to Brock?
