Headaches wont be a problem as id be just paying someone else to take on the problem :30_no_mouth:

Lol famous last words.
Read through piggaz thread and see the effort he has gone to to get him happy with using the turbo (i know its piggaz, and he has endless cash, but its certainly a lot of work and ECU shit too).

Not sure the details of his build but didn't take Greg long to switch from a gtx to efr timeframe wise?

Doesn't take Greg long to do anything. Especially destruction, that's his specialty. You shouldn't base your thoughts on Gregs experiences. I'm sure he'll tell or has told you that personally.

Experience must be good if he's willing to sell everything on the R34 apart from his turbo kit :3_grin:

Don't understand how mechanics can delay projects so long and the customer not crack the shits at them, shit wouldn't fly in most other industries.

I'd be picking the car up, cya later going to another shop

Agreed, if i did that to any of clients they would have left.

Given that to build an engine assuming if you had all parts on hand and were working on it full time would only take a few days, but these cars just end up sitting in the corner for months

For me, it's partly my fault cos I changed a couple of things along the way.

Simple 2 weeks job turned into nearly 3 months and counting. They noticed an issue and spent some time chasing it to find nothing out of ordinary then I decided I want something else.

My credit card's gonna take a beating for sure!

It honestly depends on how happy you are and how much time/money you have.
Anything can ultimately fit and one person's easy is another person's impossibly difficult.

EFR's typically run about ~3000-3200.
Manifold and coating + shipping is $1750 ish. It took 8 weeks to arrive correctly.
External gate costs $600+ unless you find one second hand.
Fabrication work I needed would cost $2000 at Havoc.
You'll need to buy a pod filter, so that's another $100.
You will need to buy lines, GCG sell a kit for $400.
Heat beanie on turbo? $200-400 depending on brand.
Heat shielding for the "heat proof" lines kit GCG gave me? Another $300-350.
Vaccum lines, hose clamps, zip ties, random shit = $100
Tows to and from workshops/fabricator/AC place/To tuner = ????
20 hours of Labor = ?????
Tune = ????? (I DIY'ed mine and got it checked to be perfect in an hour, yay me)

It can get expensive, even if you do all your stuff yourself.

Other stuff:

Aircon line fouled, had to remove it at friends place with hoist. Do not attempt to do this because while we de-gassed the system (and had to abandon the garage, which was large... for 30 minutes, it also snap froze the welding glove being used to do it.
Then when it was de-pressurized, we removed the fitting to take the line off. An explosion happened, green "Stuff" went everywhere and we both held our breath and abandoned the garage again. It ended up costing $330 to get fixed later/re-fabbed and re-gassed.
We had to trim the bolt from an engine mount to fit the manifold too.

VS:
GTX.. buy turbo. Shit, buy one second hand! 3071's are cheaper than 3582's and EFR's.
Bolt on.
Reuse everything you already have. This assume your setup is good and working fine. Given you've kept it multiple years I'm going with yes.
Don't need to sell the 'extras' later. If you aren't DIY'ing the swap, you will save massively on labor.

Keep in mind my car is a 2.8, with a 3076 sized turbo running 17psi with a high stall converter. All of these things amplify torque and response a lot.
Most people go an 8374 with a 2.6 and say its possibly too small, let alone a smaller turbo with more motor.

I would sell my engine bay if someone gave me half of what it cost to do it. There is a vicious curve of diminishing returns at life above 300-320kw, and I can't honestly 'recommend' it unless you have the funds where it doesn't matter much to you, in which case I am more often saying "Buy a golf R with an APR tune" instead nowadays.

mine was also near on 3 months, but mainly as I was in Germany for a period so we set expectations and dates when I first went in.

we had a time line with payment milestones and regular emails with status along the way

Had car back to them day after I returned (was keeping it at home during the build) and driving it the next weekend.

The thing is, there is no "another shop" to go to

All shops act this way, that would work on these motors.

My aircon line is redone and re-routed because it blew last time on a racepace dyno. Cooler piping i was planning to get re-done atm, as it's massively long with a million bits that keeps popping on the track.

Yeah agreed what you are saying if i was going to go down a simple route of a simple swap then yeah GTX might be the way to go.

If i went down the path and going yolo ext gate, highmount then EFR.

At the moment its whether or not to put $$ and effort into a car i drive a few kms on the weekends. Honestly if i needed a daily for work i would prob just buy an E92 M3. But atm don't need one and feel like spending money on something #yolo

If only it were that simple.
I contemplated it many times, because 2nd engine job was almost at cost price so they weren't making any money, so day-to-day jobs would cut the queue... For about 4 months.

I'd rather give them the ultimatum of a end date and if they don't finish on time you're not paying for anything and picking the car up? try the next shop, rinse and repeat.

If they agree on a timeframe they should meet it.

Hate external gates

No mod is more offensive to everyone around you and your own ears. Better for power sure, but the evo that drove past the other day and sounded like a cat being mauled reminded me why I don't like them

    • I think the concept is highlighting the various scenarios where thicker oil helps, and thicker oil potentially doesn't help and only generates heat and costs power, in turn for safety which isn't actually any safer (unless you're going real hot). If anything this does highlight why throwing Castrol 10w-60 for your track days is always a solid, safe bet.
    • Jason should have shown a real viscosity vs temp chart. All the grades have very little viscosity difference at full operating temperature.
    • Oops... I meant to include the connector  view... BR/W - power from fuse L/W - motor negative to fan control amp (and off to HVAC pin19) OR/B - PWM signal (from HVAC pin20) B --  ground
    • Yep, if you are applying filler it sounds like there is something wrong with the body lol. Safe to assume there is going to be a lot of sanding going on if your still applying fillers.  Picture a perfect bare metal panel, smooth as glass. You lay down your primer, it's perfect. (why are you going to sand it?) You lay down the colour and clear, it's perfect. No sanding at all took place and you've got a perfectly finished panel.  You won't be chasing your tail, sounds like you were prepping to start laying filler. If your happy with the body after the sanding, there is some bare metal exposed and some areas with primer, no issues at all, start laying the filler. You are safe to lay filler on bare metal or primer (of course check your technical data sheet as usual for what your filler is happy to adhere to).  This isn't a 100% correct statement. There is primer that is happy to adhere to smooth bare metal. There are fillers that are happy to adhere to smooth bare metal. Just make sure you're using the right materials for the job.  Typically if you are using filler, you would go primer, colour and clear. I've never seen any instances before where someone has laid colour over body filler (maybe this happens, but I haven't seen it before). So your plan sounds pretty normal to me.
    • I don't think there's any way someone is push starting this car.. I honestly can barely move it, and moving it and steering it is just flat out not possible. I'm sure it is, but needs a bigger man than me. I have a refurbished starter now. The starter man was quite clear and consise showing me how nothing inside a starter really should contribute to slow cranking, and turned out that for the most part... my starter was entirely fine. Still, some of the wear items were replaced and luckily it didn't show any signs of getting too hot, being unfit for use, etc. Which is 'good'. I also noticed the starter definitely sounded different, which is a bit odd considering nothing should have really changed there.... Removed and refit, and we'll pretend one of the manifold bolts didn't fully tighten up and is only "pretty" tight. GM only wants 18ft/lb anyway. I also found a way to properly get my analog wideband reading very slightly leaner than the serial wideband. There's Greg related reasons for this. The serial output is the absolute source of truth, but it is a total asshole to actually stay connected and needs a laptop. The analog input does not, and works with standalone datalogging. Previously the analog input read slightly richer, but if I am aiming at 12.7 I do not want one of the widebands to be saying 12.7 when the source of truth is 13.0. Now the source of truth will be 12.65 and the Analog Wideband will read 12.7. So when I tune to 12.7 it'll be ever so slightly safer. While messing with all of this and idling extensively I can confirm my car seems to restart better while hot now. I did add an old Skyline battery cable between the head and the body though, though now I really realise I should have chosen the frame. Maybe that's a future job. The internet would have you believe that this is caused by bad grounds. In finding out where my grounds actually were I found out the engine bay battery post actually goes to the engine, as well as a seperate one (from the post) to the body of the car. So now there's a third one making the Grounding Triangle which is now a thing. I also from extensive idling have this graph. Temperature (°C) Voltage (V) 85 1.59 80 1.74 75 1.94 70 2.1 65 2.33 60 2.56 55 2.78 50 2.98 45 3.23 40 3.51 35 3.75 30 4.00   Plotted it looks like this. Which is actually... pretty linear? I have not actually put the formula into HPTuners. I will have to re-engage brain and/or re-engage the people who wanted more data to magically do it for me. Tune should be good for the 30th!
