It's an mx5...

But with turbo.
And it wouldn't be for me. Be for gf I don't have yet. So I can drive it occasionally but also say "dw fellas, it's not mine m8"

I keep forgetting about flash tunes... Need dat stage 1.5

Expensive, too many add on modules and only specialists know how to modify behaviour

The fiata 124 sounds great (!!) and yeah has a turbo. Same motor that the old Fiat 500 abarth has (which also sounds amazeballs and not too bad to get to 220kw)

Which is more than enough in a 950kg car made for fun.
Souce: Skyline owner who wishes he had his gf's MX5 all the time.

Guy seems to have trouble keeping grip under throttle...not sure if it's damp or just a tail-happy lightweight car

Sounds alright but you'd be pushing that 1.4 hard to get it where you want it performance wise...I'm talking a hypergear high flow....Nismo 555s...PFC...Z32...GTR intake mod...

MX5's are freaking amazing when done well. I kinda want an SE

With the prices they are asking I'd rather SR20 a standard one...you know...just drop one in cause that's how easy engine conversions are

If Mazda had given the latest MX5 the balls to pull a 5.5 second 0-100 it would have smashed the 86 for sales

In other small targa/convertible options...

I see Alfa 4Cs are still commanding huge prices

Lotus' seem like good second hand value if you consider the depreciation from new

And last of the MR2s converted to the last Celica engine look like fun

Have you seen project thunderbolt on YouTube? Guy takes an mx5 and a flying miata kit and drops a 6L 370kw LS crate motor into it and to a standard where it's passable for a "that's how it came from the factory" appearance.

Why would you go a Lexus motor? Clearly an LS would have made as much or more power with far greater ease. Also, it has an r154 "supra gearbox".

The more you read the spec sheet the more you are wondering wtf the builder was thinking when making those choices.

I've seen them make a few appearances...something different and probably nicer to drive. The only thing that doesn't make sense to me in the build is a Porsche fuel pump.

Where did it say/show it had an R154? They did come in 1JZ Supras. Great box but I wouldn't want to break it with how rare and expensive they are now.

Edit: just saw you can buy them brand new on eBay from Toyota for 3k? Daduq? When did this happen!

Just looked it up...does look nice and factory. Wonder if the LS upset the handling at all...apparently doesn't bother the RX7s too much. That's probably something I'd say excessive / tyre frying. Be happy with about 200rwkw in an MX5; would be plenty to have fun and keep it tractable on the street.

It says 5 speed supra box. The getrag boxes from the mk4 are 6 speed, so it has to be the r154 from the mk3.

Porsche fuel pump probably just means it's an 044.

Freind of mine came by the other night to give me a lift somewhere... showed up in his new daily.

2002 BMW 745li with the v8

Was $245,000 with the options on his, now $10,000

Going to be fun once something breaks

Nah most 5 speed Supras came with a W58. They only used R154 in the MK3 to handle 1JZ no shit + in Soarers and Chasers. Originally a JDM Hilux 2WD box, which explains why they have a horribly agricultural shift feel.

W58/57/55 boxes are the most common Supra boxes found in conversions cause they are small, relatively strong, have a range of shifter housing lengths (including remote), and were plentiful before all the kit car and 70s Holden/Ford manual conversion guys pillaged them from wreckers.

The R154 is slightly larger but still a small box considering the power it holds. Used to upsell people to it when they asked for a W58 box to put behind a decent V8. Not many Aussie converters knew about them, but they also used to be rare cause the JDM / Supra guys would snap them up for their own conversions. Obviously not a problem now you can buy brand new lol. So there's a chance it could still be an R154 in there, particularly when he's done a Toyota V8 conversion and adaptor plates were/are available on eBay. Strong box but the GTS-T one is much nicer to shift.

    • Also had a look at the Nissan JP website looks like the 400r has a slightly shorter ratio than than the regular V37 3.133 VS 2.937 which from a guy who has driven both 3.69 vs 4.11 ratios in the S15 is bugger all. Seems that the AUTO Z runs the same ratio as the 400R but can't find any info as to if its an open or LSD? More often than not the auto LSD is open
    • Do not replace the power steering lines with this stuff. If it's anything like the Chase Bays stuff it will leak and be worse than stock. The reason why the reservoir is on the LH/passenger side of the car is because that's just where the reservoir was most convenient to fit. Don't overthink this stuff. The intake/cold side of the engine is pretty busy on these cars. And again, the hardpipe is designed to be a janky power steering cooler. In theory you can replace it with a real power steering cooler but that's really only for track use where boiling the fluid is a distinct possibility. Start with the low pressure lines feeding the pump from the reservoir. Make sure there isn't a bunch of junk in the reservoir filter. Be careful to not get ATF all over the engine bay. I hate dealing with ATF spills, you can clean it up and the slightest crevice will still release more oil that can still drip over time. You also want to inspect for leaks before you make a mess and can't tell what happened. Most likely you have a leak somewhere that is allowing fluid out and air in. Failing that it's allowing air in but not fluid out. Only place I can really see that happening is on the low pressure side because the pump will pull a slight vacuum to draw fluid in. Everything after the pump is high pressure or lower pressure, approaching atmospheric by the time it returns to the reservoir.
    • I did a skidpan night at SMSP this week, it was much cheaper than $350. But yeah, you need to slap an LSD in that thing.  I put an OS Giken in the 370Z and it's f**king MARVELOUS even compared to Nissan's viscous LSD. So you're saying it's free now that it's a housing estate? 😂
    • Nah, the car seems to run exactly as it did prior, in saying this it does "seem" to be better down low, like more eager to rev, but that may be 100% placebo effect from intake noise But, I'm not worried about it at all, in the end it is a fairly low compression NA engine that has a well shrouded intake,  if it is getting hotter IAT I cannot notice anything negative performance wise from the seat of my pants thrashing it about on the street or sitting in traffic, so meh, car now now makes induction noise so I'm happy
    • Do you have an IAT sensor? It's worth checking it to see. You may be suprised how little gap you actually need to flood your engine with hot air. (I tape up my airbox for a reason) :p
