Before I start I did search here and other Nissan boards ie Z32 and Silvia / 200SX ones .

From what I read an S2 R33 GTS25T manual uses a short nose R200 VLSD in 4.11 ratio and with 5 bolt side stub flanges .

Non ABS R33s have the shortest nose because the ABS sensor versions are slightly longer .

I did read here that S2 R34GTt and S15 200SX use the same short nose length and it sounds like they use the same 5 bolt side flanges as my R33 . Does this mean that the S15 diff bolts in maybe with a change of rear cover and would give the 3.69 ratio and the helical/Torsen style LSD ?

If not is there a bolt in 3.9 ratio option for non ABS R33 .

I'm not after opinions on why the ratio change just the interchangeability facts .

S15 is 3x2 bolts on the stub axles. So no go on that one. The stub axles for the helicals are not interchangable with VLSD stubs because there are length differences.

S15 is available with helical with both 3.69 and 4.11 ratios.

S2 R34 helical diffs are made from unicorn shit. Just try finding one. They're 4.11 ratio anyway, so don't buy you what you are mostly after (that being the taller ratio).

I don't know that the housing lengths are different at all when the ABS speed sensor is in place on the snout. So I cannot confirm your thoughts around that. Also keep in mind that only some of the models have the shitty 3 channel ABS. Many ABS Skylines have code wheels and sensors on each stub.

From pics I've seen the ABS sensor is in the nose of the casing which is a tad longer on ABS equipt R33s (RWD) . I think RWD R34s have the ABS sensors on the sides for 4 channel or four sensor systems . And the shorter short nose case like non ABS RWD R33s . R33s must have had 3 channel if fitted .

I suppose the way out with the side stubs if Silvias didn't have 5 bolt is to fit a Skyline carrier in the Silvia diff case keeping its original crown wheel .

I've been inside older long nose R200s and H190s swapping hemispheres and the only dramas were offsets between different crown wheels . Oh and also crown wheel bolt sizes .

Does anyone happen to know if the carrier offset is the same with Skyline 4.11 and Silvias 3.9 and 3.7 ?

From searching around I think the go may be to buy an aftermarket LSD carrier ie Nismo or Kaaz that comes with the correct 5 bolt side stub/flanges . These are supposed to work better than the OE Viscous center not that its a big issue ATM .

So the next question is will an LSD carrier for a GTS25T fit and work in an S14 or 15 non ABS diff assembly with taller ratios ie 3.9 and or 3.7 . I remember reading that R34GTt and S15s had larger stub diameters like GTRs have .

Basically will say an S14 (SR20DET) 3.9 non ABS diff take a Skyline carrier and bolt in with the Skylines rear cover plate ? Are the input flanges same R33 RWD/S14/S15 ?

I do not know offhand whether the helical (S15 and some R34) stubs are different diameter/spline count like the GTRs are. All I know is that the length is wrong. But it really doesn't matter anyway, because if you were going down the path of getting a helical, you'd just use all the helical stuff, and if you're starting with a diff that was viscous or non-LSD, then it's not an issue.

But regardless, if you were going to be buying an aftermarket centre, then you can do whatever the hell you like. Build a Frankendiff out of as many differnet bits as you need. Want an R32 housing? Use that. Want the tall gears off a Silvia? Go right ahead. Slap them all together with the aftermarket centre and drift off into the sunset. For example, I built such a diff using mY R32 housing, an S15 centre and stub axles* and the 4.11 gears from an R34 VLSD. Cost more than the result is worth really, but that's only a small issue.

*this resulted in me changing to S14 driveshafts as a consequence, which is not ideal but it works.

The idea is to have a bolt in 3.9 ratio diff with the right side flanges to suit my drive shafts , and tailshaft . From KAAZ part numbers you can see which S14s and R33s use the same carrier or hemisphere if you like .

As for carrier offset , some on Silvia boards describe this as the "thickness" difference between crown wheels of different ratios . The change over seems to be between 3.9 and 3.7 and someone reckoned the RWD Skyline 4.11 and S14 3.9 are the same - handy . Also all short nose R200s apparently use 12mm crown wheel bolts .

So with an exchange of carriers and back plate it could be an easy way to get a slightly taller final drive using all factory parts .

Yes, we all know that the GTR splines are larger. No, I don't think the helicals are larger too - just different lengths. And NO, definitely NO, any other S15 or R34 diff is not larger in the splines either. There is precious little difference between an R34 VLSD and an R33 VLSD, for example. ABS sensors etc notwithstanding.

It seems Nissan have changed the R200 carrier or crown wheel offset if you like in the 3.69 - 3.91 gap . The 3.54 and the 3.69 ratio pinions have 13 teeth where the shorter ones ie 3.91 and 4.08 have less teeth and so a smaller diameter .

This is why people find a 5mm difference in crown wheel height or "thickness" when they pull late R200s apart and try to swap their aftermarket LSD carriers from say an S14/S15 3.69 ratio into a shorter 4.08 ratio JDM R200 .

    • Initial/early bite is a feature of.....generic pads. Things that work cold. Just put Bendix Ultimate in it. If you don't like them, it's only $3.50 wasted and an hour to change them. I've been using Intima SR, and they seem to be a good performance pad. Street friendly and able to take at least a little beating.

    • As I implied in my post, I have NO idea what the were. But in case I didn't make it clear, the way they performed was brilliant; whatever the brand was. I think it was the compound that made the difference. And if they were Bendix, then sign me up, I want another set. I did drive down mount Ousley (just outside of the Gong) a few times, and they showed no untowards performance.   Its not the low dust that I am looking for NOW. At the time I needed low dust, but now I have no issues with dust but want the initial/early bite of the pads that were used. Yeah, the early cold squeal may of been due to a missing shim or such.  And to repeat, its not the low dust I am seeking, its the initial bite of the pads and increase in bite as  the warmed up during each breaking. As soon as I let off, I don't remember the breaks being extra sticky if I used them again soon after. But I also did not test that theory.   Thanks for the recommendation, But I would prefer to choose something specifically with the behaviour I described.   I assume that they didn't use the default compound off the shelf, as we discussed the dust issue at length. And the early squeal when cold, I have seen the sound is more of an issue with some pad compounds. Mostly ceramic, which also are said to produce less dust.
    • Well, in 2007 he must have been charging about $1800 an hour. He only looked at the car for 5 minutes. And another 4 to write the report wrong, and another minute to correct it. Mind you, this was for a car that was: Stock engine, fmic (hole in drivers guard), all alloy intake and custom air box, 3 inch turbo back exhaust, lowered, and a set of 17" Advans (255/40/17 rear and 235/45/17 front). It was nothing crazy. The blue slipper wanted the "hole in the guard" engineered. But that was because he got the shits that I wouldn't "relocate the battery from the boot, back to the factory position in the engine bay"... In an R33 GTST...     Also for emissions, E85, and don't go wild on timing. It's amazing how the closer you get ignition timing towards max torque, the last couple of degrees really throw NOx counts right up. And for the huge increase in emissions, it's only a small increase in torque.
