I wanted to get something like a 5% or 10% on the sunroof of my r32 skyline, but i couple of guys i called said they sometimes crack in the future. Is there any real truth to this? the sunroof already has something like a 35% tint from factory.

Thanks

pretty sure it's not sunroof's crack its just no one will put tint on them because of the type of 'glass' and the temps the endure the tint itself doesnt work well on them ie: stick properly ...will buble etc

could be wrong but im pretty sure thats what i got told when I asked many years ago

Ive currently got metallised house tint on my sunroofs. Has been perfect for years, was a free offcut, is a nice colour, cuts out the radiant heat. They look like mirrors from outside the car.

If it can sit on a house window in the sun all day I don't see why it shouldnt be fine on a car.

my sunroof doesnt have a film tint on it, it looks like the glass has a tint 'BUILT IN' when it was being made if that makes any sense. Is it still okay if i get a 5% tint?

its like tinting privacy glass, its fine, just darker. there are no rules to tinting it. you can spraypaint it black if you want.
i cant imagine it would crack, just tint it.

Man, it's just that it will be extremely difficult to find another OEM one if it cracked. Give me your guarantee and ill go do it tomorrow...

i got mine tinted one of the best things ive done don't have pull the cover in the summer any more. The guy told me most people dont tint the sunroofs cause most are inexperience or too scared and i think the sunroof uses a different glass.

maybe they trap heat? dont know really, i read its something got to do with laminated and tempered glass.

This is pretty much it. Tint retains heat. Toughened/tempered glass is treated to 600 degrees so will handle the additional heat load fine. If it's laminate glass (like your windscreen) then heat builds up on one half of the glass more than the other causing differences in expansion and the glass cracks. Tint shops aren't interested in the liability for the sake of $50.

If your sunroof is etched in one corner with "toughened", "tempered" or "TF-A" you'll be fine. If there's no marking I'd be cautious.

alright i had a look for markings on the sunroof and i found this TEMPERLITE marking which i assume is tempered glass.

What specific kind of tint should i get though...like household uv tint or normal car tint? what tint should i ask him to put on the sunroof?

    • Haha actually I did join back then under a different email address,  I couldn't re-activate my account so made a new one! I didn't post much anyway so not missing out on much. Amazing to see how the value of the cars and parts has changed over the years, also ACT section appears to be dead now.
    • Thanks... It's in pretty good condition overall, probably due to not being drifted/tuned however being a daily driver has taken its toll. Had 100k on the clock when I got it, up to 180k now. Unfortunately it's not 100% dent free, it's got a small dent on FLH side and broken indicator from where I hit a small kangaroo at high speed. If you look at closely at pic #5 you might spot the dodgy trailer light repair my old man and I rigged up as temporary repair! - It's still there due to a combo of needing the car as daily driver and then too lazy/busy to fix properly. I've a couple of other minor accidents accidents as well but nothing major. One required a new front bar and unfortunately the smash repairer ordered the normal gtst one and not the aero bar. Needed the car back asap so just went with it, regretted ever since.
    • I can't believe that anyone is foolish enough to believe that the base maps are for any other purpose than to drive the car up onto the trailer/truck or gently creep it to the dyno. No matter how good they are, they can never be any better than the factory maps**, and only the foolish trust those on a significantly modified setup. **Yeah, yeah. I know there's also the difference between factory maps being fixed to certain injector sizes and MAP/AFM/VE relationships, and the likely aftermarket ECU base maps being better able to handle the sorts of changes that would render a stock ECU dangerous, like different sized injectors. But let's just ignore that for the moment, because the principle is still the same.
    • I'm shocked, you've owned a Skyline since 2006 and never joined SAU before now! 😮   Welcome, it's much quieter these days than it was in 2006, but lots of very knowledgeable ones lurk around here. I actually think in outage we've forgotten more about Skylines than anyone knows about them today... 😛
    • So it could give us some info. Such as we find out what number they started at, and we know how many of those blocks came before it.
