I'm looking to upgrade to something bigger in-tank, but the thought of the noise is a bit off putting. The car is an R33 GTS-T and would be making probably 200-250kw in the near future.

So, very simply, what brand/model of upgraded fuel pump did you find to be acceptably quiet?

And conversely, what pumps did you get that were excessively noisy?

First mod I did was to upgrade from stock to Nismo fuel pump, went from inaudible to a slight buzz, and back to inaudible as soon as my exhaust was upgraded, and its a quiet exhaust. The car was a 32gtst not a 33.

I run the E85 Walbro pump, as it's a modern design it's very quiet... it's quieter than my old Tomei pump in my previous R33, however it will heat up your stock wiring like a boss.. I have installed 12gauge wiring from the battery to a 40AMP relay to the fuel pump and earthed the pump directly, bypassing all that FPCM business.

Ive had nearly every fuel pump known to man hahaha, at least 10 different types i can think of, by far the quietest was the Denso 265l/ph intank i just took out of my 33, was silent. The 040 that was in there previously was a bit louder. Happily supported 270 kw. Have just gone to a pair of solid mounted 044's, fed by a pierburg in tank e85 specific lift pump for 350kw +. Could have done it with an in tank, but is now race car so not an issue.

I also had an R34 GTR pump that was barely audible and supported a 250kw SR20. Had a Nismo in tank as well and although you could hear it, wasn't offensive in the slightest. I had a walbro 255 in my R31 and it was pretty noisy?

For the money, denso is the go. Think i paid $150 for my denso new, probably less. Is also straight fit. For your power level i think the walbro 460 is a bit overkill.

Side note: I have an A1000 in another car, and that vid does the noise no justice. It's seriously the loudest fuel pump I've ever heard!

Cool. I think walbro or denso might be the way to go. Anyone know what kinda max power the 265/255 Lph etc can handle?

Depends on a lot of variables, you need good voltage to it with thick wires, and your fuel pressure and boost has a lot to do with flow output.

I would usually expect 300kw on e85 or 400kw on 98 from the Walbro 255's.

External pumps like the bosch 044's need a bit of head pressure on them, quietens them down immensely, and to have no restriction before their inlet, ie being bolted straight to the surge tank with the largest fitting possible, and fitting a check valve in the return line that opens around 20psi (irrelevant though to your question)

The good thing about an intank pump is that its immersed in fuel and generally external to the cars cabin, if its bad enough, a small roll of sound deadener mounted around the boot and tyre well will really reduce the noise.

    • HKS trigger kit should be very easy to integrate with a Link. It's a 36-2 crank trigger. Hard part is finding the motivation to take off the timing belt and everything on the front of the engine to install it. You also need to cut out a hole in the oil pump housing so the sensor can read the trigger wheel. Changing out the cam sensor for a 24 tooth setup is probably good enough but as others have mentioned depending on what underlying assumptions are changed it becomes more of a problem. Reading the crank state off of the cam is an abstraction that works in the general case, but if you have an edge case it makes less and less sense. There is a GTX2860 gen 2 that can take a compact 5 bolt housing so it's direct bolt on but I'm not 100% sure of what's involved. Peak compressor efficiency drops off a bit on these turbos vs -5s, 77% vs 73% but you get way, way wider region of operation. The -5s have a really strange surge line in their compressor map that is all over the place. If you think the hot side on the -5s aren't open enough you can try the Tomei T550B turbos which a local tuner seems to be happy with:
