Couple Of Northerners Coming To Mel-bin

Recommended Posts

Hey fellow SAU members, myself and a couple of other guys are coming down your way late next month to partake in a few track days, drive the Great Ocean Road and go to the melbourne cup.

What other roads would you locals say are worth driving and things you recomend doing while down in southern mexico? Also, any SAU Vic events running in the last week of Oct and the first week of Nov?

Check out the black spur up near Healesville. 12-13km of twisties and beautiful untouched forests. It is frequented by police trying to slow down motorbikes though, so keep your wits about you :)

At least a few deaths a year on motorbikes. But it's a killer drive (pun unintended).

I also like all the roads around the dandenong ranges.

Sounds like Mt Nebo road up here, many bikers die every year. It's also an awesome road.

Thanks, I'll have to check them out.

lol I rode there on my motorbike in winter...that's some scary shit with all the leaves over the road. Never had so many inadvertent slides while doing less than the speed limit :O

The Great Ocean Road has some amazing scenery, but I fear that it's dead as a driving road. I sincerely hope your expereinces are different but of the three or four times we've given it a go the experience has been soured by grey nomads doing 30 in 100 zones (that is not an exaggeration), tourists forgetting we drive on the left, and painfully low speed limits along with overbearing enforcement, presumably as a bandaid for the previous two and the people trying to get around them. As I said I hope you guys have a blast, and others may love the place, but thus far my experiences haven't been great (no pun intended).

See if anything is happening in Geelong, there's usually some kind of car-related event going on there, and you'll be passing through anyway if you're going to the GOR. Generally more around classic cars but big car culture down that way.

I hear that the Great Alpine Road is nice in summer. I've only done it in winter but it'd be no less spectacular I'm sure in summer, though perhaps someone who has done it can confirm. A bit of a hike if that worries you.

As already mentioned the roads around the Dandenongs are great if you can get them on a quiet day, you can have fun on them without doing anything illegal. They are similar in a lot of ways to Glorious/Nebo/Mee but the surrounding countryside is even nicer IMHO. And it's winery country. Look up places like Reefton, Marysville, Yarra Glen, Kinglake, Healesville as mentioned etc.

I also don't mind up some of the less-travelled roads between say Werribee and Bacchus Marsh, Gisbourne, Ballan etc.

Knowing the GOR I was expecting nothing less than shit driving but it's something I've always wanted to do. I'll have to spend some time on other quieter roads as well.

I fill up in Cranbourne on the way and take 3 jerry's just in case.

Usually if I fill up there I can do the 1st 2 sessions with what's left in the tank.

The other 2 jerry's will get me through the day and leave me with almost enough fuel to drive back out west depending on how much track time I get.
