Ummm yeah u can, u can get an 1989 R32 GT-R for 16 grand. I found one in perfect condition. Thats the price for it to be fully complianced and shipped to Autralia. You just gotta get off your arse and look around and u can easily get an r32 GT-R for that price.

Sure you can get a car at that price, mine was $9k landed not complied.

BUT don't expect a show pony that you will never spend a cent on.....dont expect it straight, dont expect everything to work, budget for a engine or turbo rebuild, or both.

15 year old, sports car, good condition, cheap. Askin a bit much don't you think?

man it's crazy to spend 1/3 the value of your car on insurance!!!!!

i was 19 or 20 when i got my r33 gts-t, fully stock. paid $3200/yr on insurance and it cost me $26,500. that is 12% of the value of the car. i renewed it 1yr later at $2700 (famous classic) which was okay.

but a few months after renewing i sold my skyline. i know how a car works in *theory*, but i have no idea how to actually fix things, so to me, the risks were now outweighing the benefits. my odo was playing up and it became apparent that it had been fiddled with. the car itself was running perfectly, but for how much longer? i wasn't prepared to shell out thousands a year for insurance and probably 1-2 grand a year in the next couple of years in maintenance. that is a total of probably like 3-4k a year.

i currently have an audi which is costing me more insurance than the skyline ever did (3700 or so), but it is with NRMA so it's to be expected that it will be higher than average. i figure if i'm going to pay about that in insurance+maintenance i may aswell have a more valuable car!

moral of the story: you can afford to BUY a $15k skyline, but can you afford to OWN one? make the smart decision, don't sacrifice your future income on exhorbitant insurance costs which will mean you have to wait till you are like 25 or 30 to upgrade your car because you haven't been able to save cos insurance renewal comes and steals it all every year.

My first car is the car ive got now in my gallery ;)

But its not the first car ive driven for a descent amount of time. I did a good year of driving around in my dads Holden and a few other cars here and there.

Dont forget, the chances of having an accident with your first car is very high

for god sake, no matter how much it costs you must have insurance if you've got a loan on the car. Imagine having no car after an accident AND still having to pay the loan.

You have to take into account the cost of insurance before you buy the car....

No i didnt buy it. There are plenty for that price so there is no rush. Compliecing is only $500 for the 89 GT-R. The thing is i wouldnt want to buy an R32. There are a bit too much on the Grandpa side for me. (too old).

Not $500 i wish'd it was!

Getting insurence on a car that was purchesed with a loan is 100% MUST!

Its not here yet you are stating it is in perfect condition  Japs are like the rest of us, they will sell their cars for what they are worth, and sadly you dont buy perfect 15year old GTRs for 16k...

Even if it is relatively std and clean, you can be sure that the thing has travelled kms, so suspension (not just shocks but boots and bushes) clutches, diffs, engine (dont forget solid lifters need more servicing then hydraulis and the Japs arent known for their servicing) are tired and may need addressing.

So still great value and an awesome car at 16k, but perfect it aint, unless by perfect you mean good. Just be sure to have a little on the side as it will need money spent on it. The only case where this may not be true is if insurance companies have seized opwnership of the vehicle and only want to cover there out of pocket expenses...but you aint the only bloke on the lookout for these cars at the auction :)

i wasn't suggesting not getting insurance, i agree duncan, it is stupid. i am saying don't buy a car which will cost you as much as the car in 3 years.

be smart. don't buy a car which will cost you every spare penny unless you are okay with having your financial status in comatose for however long you own your car for.

cars are not assets - granted. but don't buy one which is multiple times more costly to "own" than a "normal" car.

i wear moccos

I guess this once again proves one thing:

If you want one of the best cars on the road for school kid pocket money prices..

Your not going to get away with it without paying somewhere along the line.

And for that i'm grateful, theres already enough young guys who can barely afford to keep their cars serviced driving around in these great cars.

well if you didn't buy it, how can you say it's in perfect condition?

p.s. I'm not against the importing thing (I imported my car) but I agree with others in this thread. Yes alot of 89 GTR's come up for 15 or 16K - but don't say it's easy to get one "in perfect condition" for that price cos it ain't..

    • Can you log IAT? Whilst WTA coolers have their place, doing any sort of sustained run is not one of them There are fixes that slow down the heat soak, like ice boxes, which don't last that long, and interchillers, which are fairly expensive, up grades to the WTA cooling radiator, which may require a bigger pump, and upgrades to the reservoir size,  and upgrades to the cooling fans, but, it all still heat soaks, and takes ages to come down in hot weather  For a turbo, that isn't locked into WTA like my PD blower is, can you not possibly swap to a nice air to air intercooler????, it would be better for sustained runs then, and have alot less things that could go wrong in my opinion
    • So, the other thing I've sorted is a baseline dyno run up at Unigroup's new location. The auto trans was a little unco-operative by both shifting down when the throttle was floored on the dyno (so Mark had to ramp it up more slowly than in a manual) and also by shifting up at 6,000 even in sports mode instead of the indicated redline of 7,000 Still, on a hot day it made 240rwkw at 16psi which seems about right for 300kw (400hp) through an auto at the wheels.  The shape of the curve is not quite right because it was not full throttle to about 4,500 to stop it kicking down, but until I can get a tune on the auto trans control this was the best we could do.....full boost will be well below 5,000 once that is sorted, I'll get some data logs when I can to confirm For comparison, the R32 made 255 at 12psi (at 4,500) on the same dyno with tune, n1 turbos, cam gears, big exhaust but otherwise all standard so the v37 is likely a little better out of the box. One thing that is very clear is that the standard water to air intercoolers are not up to sustained use at full throttle in warm ambient temps. After about 5 runs (so only a few minutes full throttle), it was pulling boost and timing and dropping 10-15% power. Unfortunately I didn't get that printout and the Unigroup guys are away at the moment, will try and get hold of it on their return. So, looks like a healthy engine to start modifying and the only real area of concern is the w2a heat exchangers which the aftermarket has plenty of solutions for
    • I maintain it actually looked really nice in person. So much so that I thought "No, this is illegal" but there it was, clear as day. I think we can easily call the wing and wheels/height to be transformative. Not saying it's better than the GR Whatever, or the 86, or the WRX STI or anything of that sort (the internet says it all bolts up so you can buy best of all worlds?) but it's still at least a thing and not nearly AS bad as people say.
    • That's less offensive than the previous gen.....except for all that ugly black tupperware around the edges. Blerck!
    • I leant out the window recently and took a picture of this new WRX. It looked real damn fine in person. It's faster around a track (stock) than a (stock) GR Yaris. It's much more practical despite being heavier. It's significantly cheaper. This gen tunes really well, much better than others. .... I think they're probably a lot better than people expect.
