I had a mines ecu in my gtr left the boost restrictor in till I removed it and never had issues, the issue with them is they run lots of timming and rich and are tunned for 100ron, but the stock ecu is fine if Nissan didn't want us removing the boost restrictor then they would of hidden it better and not painted a yellow strip around it, if you don't know what detonation sounds like or how to read your plugs or check base timming then I would be leaving it to a mechanic who does

Yes, that makes perfect sense. I could have figured that out myself, Always good to hear it from others though.

No issues with the Mechanics side of things, More of the what to do and what not to do. ( Former All Holden guy... )

So, an aftermarket ecu and a good Dyno tune wouldnt hurt. Any excuse to do more Mods.. =D

yes it was designed to be taken out!! When using 100ron fuel, which only very few United servos have and nobody else. On 98 it hurts engines

My 32GTR had a catback and nipple removed to net 1bar boost everything else stock.

Factory setting for base timing @20deg was fine with 98 octane so long as it was 22deg or colder outside!

Pulled very hard but I noticed temps over 22deg outside the factory ecu would pull timing as it prolly detected light detonation.

But on hot days I wouldn't be belting a gtr anyway.

So you could do the above std setup being mindful of fuel Ron and weather or turn base ign timing down via cas to maybe 17 or 15deg and have a laggy pig no matter what weather or fuel used.

Run no. 7 heat range plugs too that also lower temps avoiding detonation.

As others have said in the thread, mild steel will give you a deeper sound without the tinny rice boy Hyundai sound that so many titanium and stainless setups produce. Forget the look, people don't see under your car anyway. Just use a stainless or titanium end muffler and it'll look the same anyway.

Love my custom mild steel system. Deep and never droney, but thanks to my special cat it rasps when you're up high in the rev range. Best of both worlds.

    • Sharing results from recent Liberty Walk R35 GTR, since they are still considered as somesort of a V36 Skyline. We do them turbos too. This are high flowed SS-1 models with ball bearing conversion done.  Car have managed to pull 485awkws @ 20Psi so far pushing limitations of factory built engine. The build list for R35 GTR enthusiasts as follow : HyperGear high flowed stock turbos in SS1 (G25-660 specs) Custom titanium intake pipes. Vspec performance titanium front pipes. Vspec performance 4" titanium exhaust. Upgrade fuel pumps. 1200cc injectors. Ignition coilpacks Hks intake plenum. Hks intercooler piping. Greddy intercooler. Greddy bovs. Top-secret coolant reservoir. Emtron ecu. Straight E85. Built gear box.  
    • Nah no bearings, just slip fit.  Would be a reasonably challenging but not impossible job to modify it to run bearings but I'm hoping that's not necessary as I may have well built one myself if I end up spending hours modifying it!
    • Brumbys with good shells are bloody expensive, I've looked at 2 "cheaper" cars, and walked away from both,  plus after some research spare parts are fairly sparce I'm starting to think that I missed the boat on finding a clean one that is straight (ish) and without alot rust I'm starting to think about a old Hilux as panels and other parts are much more available as they sold tens of thousands of them I use to be indecisive but now I'm not sure
    • A Brumby would probably fit a big metal toolbox in the back... this is how it begins  
    • Picked up a new OEM boot seal for the MX5 today as the old one got ripped a bit by me being a idiot by seeing if I could fit a large metal tool box in it, it didn't fit, and ripped the seal with the corner of the tool box I am still waiting on time to get the cams and new balancer installed, as well as the repairs to the boot Time will not be an issue soon though
