quick question, im debating on to keep the stock oil cooler/warmer unit or get rid of it.... planning on running a oil cooler for track purposes

Is it still fine to keep the oil oem unit, and slap a oil cooler relocation unit + cooler on ? Every write up ive seen has had ppl remove them, and having limited space looks like a challenge in getting to the unit and removing the stud itself

The answer to that question is will your oil temp go up quickly enough on track before you blast it without the OEM water unit?

We know of one engine setup with exactly the same clearances as our current build that takes 40min to an hour to get oil temps up to a safe working level........hence why we will run our water unit to help add heat quicker with a thermostatically controlled oil cooler setup to take over once the oil is hot.

What oil thermostate are you using GTRPSI?

I have a grex/greddy unit that I haven't installed yet because I can't make sense of its operation. When I blow through the ports it's as if it is already open and oil would be flowing through the cooker, I contacted garage 7 who I purchased it from and they tell me that their items on shelf behave the same way and that's the way greddy have intended it to work, even tho they dont understand it either?

The flow a little to reduce air pockets in the oil cooler lines/oil cooler itself.

Bob is correct as usual, it is designed to bypass 10% or so to stop thermal shock loading. Remember the oil in the cooler could possibly be 0 degrees, and if that thick oil hit your bearings at 8k revs as the thermostat opened it could cause failure.

The Grex kit is very nice quality, mine has been on for 6 years on my daily Stagea and allows for quick oil heating in the mornings, even though I run a 30 row cooler.

Port 1 and 1a is oil supply from engine

Port 2 is return to engine

port 3 is supply to cooler

port 4 is return from cooler

When i blow port 1 air comes out around where the filter would sit and would then flow into port 1a.

when i blow port 1a air comes out of Port 2,3 and 4 .

When I block any 2 of these ports the flow is unobstructed.

I expected that when I block ports 2 and 4 the flow to the port 3 (oil cooler supply) would be through a small orifice and would be difficult to blow through until the thermostat had opened.

Grex, as mentioned they are designed to leak through......keeps air locks out.

Can you imagine it opening after you fitted it and no oil was in it? ;)

    • Probably a smart choice to buy one vs build, purely for the motivation part as you said! Imagine the metal dust everywhere from grinding all the steel to build one. Ha ha ha!   Also, post a photo of your garage.   Mine is below, this is where I've been cleaning and have already half filled a caged 6*4 trailer. And this is after my cleaning expedition mentioned previously... The middle normally has a car in it, but I'm dumping things in the middle as I sort through them. And poor skyline was dusty and has had the lightest few drops of rain and now it looks atrocious and needs to be dragged back out and washed thoroughly! And yes to the right is technically another bay, you really can only see 2 bays out of 3 in this picture.  
    • It's more like on average the things I see a lot of things going wrong. Yes, usually the people who reach out are the ones who are having problems but on average it feels like mechanics and tuners here aren't really competent. I swing between thinking my standards are just way too high and wondering whether people really are just this dumb. I just had the strangest 10+ reply argument on a Facebook group over someone insisting that the factory R34 GTT boost control solenoid reduces boost pressure to 5 psi when it's on and raises boost pressure to 7 psi when it's off despite showing the exact plumbing in the factory service manual and the solenoid behavior detailed in the FSM.
    • I steam cleaned my near new set of volk gtc wheels 14 years ago and farrkkked them lol. The clear coat cracked like spider webbing in several areas. Lesson learnt don't do that. 😭
    • If you don't touch the CAS, then you're fine.
    • Yeah, my moulds and seals are 32 years old now. I think I will continue to not use a pressure washer on it.
