Skylines racing at Bathurst

Recommended Posts

Maybe I should of started a new thread but it's kind of the same thing :(

I will be doing the ESSES this weekend I hope the weather fine's up, will be really scary if doing it in the wet for my first time :D I like both your datto's Harry..Such cool little car!

I hope to get a spot at the speed weekend in Dec and wanted to get some practice in before then

Thanks for your input guy's, feeling a little more confident and going on 18inch street tyres didn't have a clue that most have done this event already! I will be retuning the car tomorrow night as well been a bit funny since putting the engine back in and I need more power in a straight line (but I really need bigger turbo's :D ).

See how me and the car goes. *excited* :woot:

I guess I got that impression because you kept saying Superlap was your first event and how good your time was for a first time and so on...l. how were we to know you're actually more experienced at circuit events than drags? sorry if the little jibe about corners offended you, I also got the impression you were a bit thicker skinned than that. I'd hate to be responsible for you "sticking to drag racing" when you don't even like it.

Harry

i think again i will have to clarify...Superlap was our first REAL go at a corner EVENT, i did even use those words in thread. Track days and such to me dont count as i was driving a daily driver that had zero set-up, bugger all grip and no brakes...just a bit of fun really. At Superlap we actually spent some time (2 weekends) prepping the daily driver to a racecar and was aiming to compete not just make up the numbers. Im not thin skinned at all...you might be just stirring without having full knowledge about what your typing about and assuming a lot. Should i now put a little smiley face at the end of this as a waiver?

Lets move on shall we...

Harry seems as you have already been there can you give us a few pointers on set-up?

Good point Paul - I would like to know about setup as well..I can't go all out as my GTR is a daily driver still for the moment :woot: But I do have a stupid amount of negative camber on the front..It works on the track for me but not on the general road :D

How's your tyre bill Jess? going through plenty of fronts?

I tend to only have one real setup per car. I might make very small tweaks at the track if the car doesn't do what I want it to on the day, btu they are generally tyre pressue, swaybar, and maybe toe. But my cars seem to handle the same every time I drive them. I'd leave different setup for different tracks to professional race teams with engineers who have far more in-depth knowledge on suspension tuning than I do, and data avaiable from previous runs at a particular track to refer to.

At our level, there is more time to be found in the driver than setup changes to suit a particular track. And its very easy to loose time and loose track of where you were with your setup if you're constantly changing it.

Esses hillclimb really is a power course anyway rather than handling. Biggest gain from suspension tuning at this hillclimb would be ensuring you have good traction for the start line (very steep uphill start) and out of the 1st turn (forest elbow) for the long "straight" that follows it. But it shouldn't be too hard to get good powerdown up such steep hills anyway - gravity has already trasferred alot of weight over the rear for you. Depending on your power level, you may even need less squat than you normally run to reduce understeer out of those uphill turns.

My advice is just turn up and drive it. - tune the driver into the track before worrying about tuning the car to the track. At a track you haven't been to before lined with concrete, you're probably better of knowing how your car is going to react anyway, so pre-event setup changes would be ill-advised

haha yeah not the best I am afraid :D but have taken the 18's off and now just run the 16's cheaper for the moment

Thanks Harry, For my first time will just turn up and have some fun :woot: If I am having problem's can tweak it on the day..

All a learning curve for me this year

haha sif, you'll be fine!!

So you're going to enter speedweekend in December?

yeah im keen, Dave will bring the Superlap car up as well. Just got to make sure it doesn't clash with family/other events.

So ill be going down conrod... they will have to tractor me out of the sand trap at the end of each attempt. They cannot possibly expect me to try and take the chase on.

Duncan as for speed estimates...you can do the maths...

1360kg GTR, 4.11 diffs, PPG straight cut dogbox, 900hp at the treads, 9500rpm rev limit and one nut behind the wheel.

FFS man! No one in here is being anything other than nice. In fact, I would go so far as to say that some people have gone beyond the call. You do indeed have thin skin and on the forums you are often rude. Most people are here to have fun so please don't take that away from them.

if you hadn't noticed the thread had moved on nicely without you adding that Adam.

sometimes the expression of words i have typed are maybe read the wrong way as has been the case in the past and again in this instance. Ill try to be a bit more careful with the words i choose as i agree somethings can be looked at as being rude but are not meant that way. You have spoken to me before both in person and at length on the telephone and understand im not rude and abrupt at all and try and be helpful when and where i can.

im trying a new thing and want to get involved in the chit-chat but seem to be doing more harm than good. Maybe i should not bother and just enter the events and keep to myself. As i think i will be forever 'scarred' with the drag racer tag which everyone seems to get delight out of. Getting to know the people involved, obtaining a bit of knowledge from them and having some people to chat with at events is my aim not causing greif at all. Ill just keep to myself in future as its very discouraging.

can we move on again to thread topic please.

Ok I am probably a noob with this question but...are you suggesting taking the drag car to bathurst? :D

I thought with your last achivement and superlap you would be contemplating "converting" twoogle to a circuit car? Or do you have two GTR's one drag one circuit already??

I just seen that bathurst have a supersprint starting at Conrod Straight finishing at Pit Straight. :) Would that be from Forest elbow to start/finish?

Jess we have 2 Red R Racing GTR's one circuit and one drag...but will bring both to Bathurst...just bringing 'twoogle' for a bit of fun.

So the conrod thing is...conrod-chase-murrays-pit starting at Forrest's elbow...oh dear...how will i ever make the chase?

nah, the Conrod supersprint starts at the bottom of the hill after Forest Elbow. You still get plenty of time to build up a good head of steam speed before the Chase. And then you probably get back up to the same sort of speed before Murray's corner onto the pit straight finishing at one of the lines there - not real sure if they use the start line or the finish line... oh and its 2 cars at a time :) overtaking allowed in supersprints

Bathurst Speed Weekend is the Conrod Supersprint on Saturday and normally Mountain Straight Hillclimb on Sunday. That's probably the best bit of sealed road I've ever competed on I reckon.

I compete in supersprints pretty regulary, but havent done any bathurst ones yet!

I'm really keen to try it out as your opion is exactly what I have heard from everyone else :)

how modified is your 32 Jess?

Not very - Just standard mods really exhaust, catch can, pod filters (when on the track) power fc and apexi suspension, had the engine out last month for a freshen up and to see what it was like inside

I put out around 280kws at 1bar, It's enough for me at the moment cause I want to learn how to the drive the car to it's full extent before adding more power to the mix!

My favourite event of the year. In the R32GTST with 235 rwkw we were turning into the right hand kink for the Chase at 230 kph, no need to back off. Then it accelerates a little more down the slight incline before the hard braking for the Chase itself. I haven't done the Mountain Straight Hillclimb for 10 years at least, I always luck out and get the Essess Hillclimb. I am trying to keep that weekend free so we can get there, in either car, it will be fun.

Cheers

Gary

    • There are fixes for this. In industry we use compressed air for everything. It is frequently wet, and many things cannot tolerate it. So there are various forms of driers available that you can install. The simplest option for something like this would be a dessicant drier. Much cheaper to replace some silica gel than actuator cylinders.
    • That's a solid update mate, well done at WA FOS. You may already know this, but the actuators on the paddle shift are a service item and are sadly not that reliable. As I understand it they collect water from the compressor (condensation) which then rusts the bores/pistons in the actuators. A mate of mine had no end of trouble with them in one if his circuit cars, apparently it's a 'known issue'. Buy a couple of spares at great expense to ensure you never have any problems with the ones you've got! Any clues about what the new WTAC rules might be? While faster cars are cool the Pro class arms race has got to the point where you wouldn't even bother entering without a $1m budget and even then I don't think you'd win.

You can see another picture of it here: https://www.alltranz.com.au/shop/drivetrain/automatic-transmission/RE5R01A/product/9305/ The 4 speed automatic in the GTT is Nissan corporate stuff. You can search up similar jobs done on a Frontier or Pathfinder with a RE4R01B to get an idea for what the internals are going to look like and the procedure like this:
    • Hi Chris,   long time since your post, just wondering if you have the Pinout for the v35 stereo plugs, I bought the roem nis2 harness but it doesn’t match the v35 connector. any help appreciated, I can work out the grn and power constant. But the rest might be hard. thanks Tyson
