I searched and searched and couldn't find what I was looking for. Spun bearings, vibrating balancers, Ross balancers, how to remove etc but no check!!!

How can you tell if your harmonic balancer has spun??? I want to check if my harmonic balancer rubber has moved [not collapsed but is on the way out] and need a way to check? My tuner has asked me to check before I get it on the dyno. I know my timing marks line up Ok but this may not be the best way.

Or if somebody has a link to it then much appreciated.

Found this [after much trawling], but there are challenges cos my motor is in one piece. So i can't set up piston stops. I might be able to use a TDC dial and maybe it will be accurate enough to check for slippage - not accurate enough to set the timing, but if there is no slip then my original timing marks are good enough for checking purposes?

As Ben said, all you need is some means of stopping the piston from reaching TDC, an old spark plug with an extension welded on the end or similar.

(Just ensure it's not some rubbish that will drop into the cylinder)

Blow any dirt/dust from the area and remove No1 spark plug, then screw the device into No1 plug hole.

Hand rotate the crank clockwise until the piston touches the stopper, thus stopping the crank from turning.

Mark the balancer across from the fixed timing pointer.

Rotate the crank anticlockwise until the piston stopper again stops the crank from turning.

Mark the balancer as previously.

TDC will be half way between those marks.

Remove the device, install spark plug etc.

Just to close out this thread, made up a piston stop using an old spark plug tapped out to 3/8 and a 3" bolt through it. I also rounded the bolt end off to remove any sharp edges Took out my sparkplugs, screwed the stop into No.1, removed the rad fan [for top access] and wound the motor backwards and forwards marking the balancer with a paint pen. I then put the vernier caliper across the pen marks back to the '0' mark on the balancer and it was exactly the same both ways. So my balancer hasn't slipped at all.

Thanks all for the help.

    • Great work! Give it a clean up with some Emery paper, and I'd run a thread die over the threads too to clean them up. It will make reinstall much easier, and also life easier for the next time it needs to come out.
    • I'm not a fan of high humidity, it's one reason I don't mind being further inland out Ipswich, except the last 3 odd years, the drought broke, and it won't stop raining, which is making the humidity nearly unbearable when the rains are in during summer! For me, my body hates the cold, once the cold sets into my body, I'm totally screwed. I end up with severe muscle spasm in my back/shoulder muscles, and it feels like someone is trying to tear the muscles out. I have no issues with it getting stupid hot, so long as the humidity goes away. So the last 3 years as above, have been woeful! Ha ha. However, June 1st, and I'm only just converting from shorts and a tee, to long pants and a t shirt. And that's mainly as it's a bit wet and miserable and I wanted to work on a car.
    • I much prefer colder weather to hot weather, and especially prefer cold to hot and humid, Goulburn does gets pretty warm in the hotter months, but, I've found the humidity there is not as painful as even Sydney, the humidity up north is to oppressing for this old rooster  In saying this, it does get rather "nippy" in Goulburn for early morning, late in the evening walks, but nothing that a layer or two, some thermal gloves, and a beanie doesn't fix to make it an enjoyable experience, which is much more bearable to me than the oppression of heat and humidity,  especially at night when your trying to sleep If I recall correctly, a "wise man" once said that the "Southern Tablelands" was gods country, and I will not argue that point with him for the fear of a "permaban" LOL In car part related news: My intake is currently in Botany getting processed for the last leg of its shipping journey to my door
