OK. i am a mechanic so i feel stupid asking this Q but i am sure my car has a problem.

When you check the timing on a R32 Gts-t. u hook up the Timing light around the loop wire at the rear of tappet cover or #1 coil wire, point gun at crank pulley & read timing.

My prob is that when i check the timing mark it is always to the left of the timing cover pointer. i.e all the way retarded reads at approx 40degrees!!

I have tried the signal wire on both ways , no difference.

Is there any wires that need to be bridged together to get the correct reading or is my line just ****ed up?

If it was retarded that far, I doubt the engine would run at all.

The marks move from left to right as you look down on them. The first mark is 30BTDC, then 5deg intervals to TDC. Are you sure its not reading 40BTDC? I have actually found that my timing light seems to give DOUBLE the actual reading, might be the case with you, so actual timing is 20BTDC (still a bit too much). To get an accurate reading, lift #1 coil, and insert a plug / coil lead between it and #1 plug, then read the timing in a "conventional" way.

That's the way we do it, stick a short piece of insulated wire in between the #1 coil and spark plug. I leave it there all the time, it saves removing the coil everytime you want to check the timing.

The timmimg light is getting a double pulse, so your timing is reading twice as much. Either half what you see or i hook my light around the 6 wires that plug into the ignition module on the exhaust side. This gives me the correct reading, i would imagine it be the same on all nissans.
